Abstract

An electronic dimming ballast or light emitting diode (LED) driver for driving a gas discharge lamp or LED lamp may be operable to control the lamp to avoid flickering and flashing of the lamp during low temperature or low mercury conditions. Such a ballast or driver may include a control circuit that is operable to adjust the intensity of the lamp. Adjusting the intensity of the lamp may include decreasing the intensity of the lamp. The control circuit may be operable to stop adjustment of the intensity of the lamp if a magnitude of the lamp voltage across the lamp is greater than an upper threshold, and subsequently begin to adjust the intensity of the lamp when the lamp voltage across the lamp is less than a lower threshold. Subsequently beginning to adjust the intensity of the lamp may include subsequently decreasing the intensity of the lamp.

Claims

1. A method for controlling a magnitude of a load current delivered to an electrical load, the method comprising:

receiving a command to adjust to the magnitude of the load current a target magnitude of the load current;

adjusting the magnitude of the load current toward the target magnitude in response to receiving the command;

determining that a magnitude of a load voltage across the electrical load is equal to or greater than an upper voltage threshold;

maintaining the magnitude of the load current constant for a period of time based on the magnitude of the load voltage being equal to or greater than the upper voltage threshold;

determining that the magnitude of the load voltage is less than a lower voltage threshold; and

adjusting the magnitude of the load current toward the target magnitude based on the magnitude of the load voltage being less than the lower voltage threshold.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the magnitude of the load current is adjusted at a first rate toward the target magnitude in response to receiving the command;

and

wherein the magnitude of the load current is adjusted at a second rate toward the target magnitude based on the magnitude of the load voltage being less than the lower voltage threshold.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the electrical load comprises a gas discharge lamp;

wherein adjusting the magnitude of the load current at the first rate toward the target magnitude comprises decreasing the magnitude of the load current at the first rate toward the target magnitude; and

wherein adjusting the magnitude of the load current at the second rate toward the target magnitude comprises decreasing the magnitude of the load current at the second rate toward the target magnitude.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the electrical load comprises a light emitting diode (LED) light source;

wherein adjusting the magnitude of the load current at the first rate toward the target magnitude comprises increasing the magnitude of the load current at the first rate toward the target magnitude; and

wherein adjusting the magnitude of the load current at the second rate toward the target magnitude comprises increasing the magnitude of the load current at the second rate toward the target magnitude.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the second rate is slower than the first rate.

6. The method of claim 2 further comprising:

after adjusting the magnitude of the load current at the second rate toward the target magnitude based on the magnitude of the load voltage being less than the lower voltage threshold, subsequently determining that the magnitude of the load voltage of the electrical load is equal to or greater than the upper voltage threshold; and

adjusting the magnitude of the load current at a predetermined rate or by a predetermined amount until the magnitude of the load voltage is below the upper voltage threshold based on the subsequent magnitude of the load voltage being equal to or greater than the upper voltage threshold.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the magnitude of the load current is periodically decreased by the predetermined amount.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein adjusting the magnitude of the load current at the predetermined rate or by the predetermined amount comprises decreasing the magnitude of the load current at the predetermined rate or by the predetermined amount.

9. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

after adjusting the magnitude of the load current at the second rate toward the target magnitude based on the magnitude of the load voltage being less than the lower voltage threshold, subsequently determining that the magnitude of the load voltage across the electrical load is equal to or greater than the upper voltage threshold;

maintaining the magnitude of the load current constant for the period of time based on the subsequent magnitude of the load voltage being equal to or greater than the upper voltage threshold;

determining that the magnitude of the load voltage is less than the lower voltage threshold; and

adjusting the magnitude of the load current at a third rate toward the target magnitude based on the magnitude of the load voltage being less than the lower voltage threshold, wherein the third rate is slower than the second rate.

10. A load control device for controlling a magnitude of a load current delivered to an electrical load, the load control device comprises:

a load voltage measurement circuit configured to generate a load voltage feedback signal representative of a magnitude of a load voltage produced across the electrical load;

a control circuit configured to;

receive a command to adjust to the magnitude of the load current a target magnitude of the load current;

adjust the magnitude of the load current toward the target magnitude in response to receiving the command;

determine that the magnitude of the load voltage from the load voltage measurement circuit is equal to or greater than an upper voltage threshold;

maintain the magnitude of the load current constant for a period of time based on the magnitude of the load voltage being equal to or greater than the upper voltage threshold;

determine that the magnitude of the load voltage is less than a lower voltage threshold; and

adjust the magnitude of the load current toward the target magnitude based on the magnitude of the load voltage being less than the lower voltage threshold.

11. The load control device of claim 10, wherein the control circuit is configured to adjust the magnitude of the load current at a first rate toward the target magnitude in response to receiving the command;

and

wherein the control circuit is configured to adjust the magnitude of the load current at a second rate toward the target magnitude based on the magnitude of the load voltage being less than the lower voltage threshold.

12. The load control device of claim 11, wherein the electrical load comprises a gas discharge lamp;

wherein the control circuit configured to adjust the magnitude of the load current at the first rate toward the target magnitude comprises the control circuit configured to decrease the magnitude of the load current at the first rate toward the target magnitude; and

wherein the control circuit configured to adjust the magnitude of the load current at the second rate toward the target magnitude comprises the control circuit configured to decrease the magnitude of the load current at the second rate toward the target magnitude.

13. The load control device of claim 11, wherein the electrical load comprises a light emitting diode (LED) light source;

wherein the control circuit configured to adjust the magnitude of the load current at the first rate toward the target magnitude comprises the control circuit configured to increase the magnitude of the load current at the first rate toward the target magnitude; and

wherein the control circuit configured to adjust the magnitude of the load current at the second rate toward the target magnitude comprises the control circuit configured to increase the magnitude of the load current at the second rate toward the target magnitude.

14. The load control device of claim 11, wherein the second rate is slower than the first rate.

15. The load control device of claim 11, wherein after the load control device is configured to adjust the magnitude of the load current at the second rate toward the target magnitude based on the magnitude of the load voltage being less than the lower voltage threshold, the control circuit is further configured to:

subsequently determine that the magnitude of the load voltage of the electrical load is equal to or greater than the upper voltage threshold; and

adjust the magnitude of the load current at a predetermined rate or by a predetermined amount until the magnitude of the load voltage is below the upper voltage threshold based on the subsequent magnitude of the load voltage being equal to or greater than the upper voltage threshold.

16. The load control device of claim 15, wherein the magnitude of the load current is periodically decreased by the predetermined amount.

The load control device of claim 15, wherein the control circuit configured to adjust the magnitude of the load current at the predetermined rate or by the predetermined amount comprises the control circuit configured to decrease the magnitude of the load current at the predetermined rate or by the predetermined amount.

The load control device of claim 11, wherein after the load control device is configured to adjust the magnitude of the load current at the second rate toward the target magnitude based on the magnitude of the load voltage being less than the lower voltage threshold, the load control device is further configured to:

subsequently determine that the magnitude of the load voltage across the electrical load is equal to or greater than the upper voltage threshold;

maintain the magnitude of the load current constant for the period of time based on the subsequent magnitude of the load voltage being equal to or greater than the upper voltage threshold;

determine that the subsequent magnitude of the load voltage is less than the lower voltage threshold; and

decrease the magnitude of the load current at a third rate toward the target magnitude based on the magnitude of the load voltage being less than the lower voltage threshold, wherein the third rate is slower than the second rate.

19. A load control device for controlling a magnitude of a load current delivered to an electrical load, the load control device comprises:

a load voltage measurement circuit configured to generate a load voltage feedback signal representative of a magnitude of a load voltage produced across the electrical load;

a control circuit configured to;

receive a command to adjust to the magnitude of the load current a target magnitude of the load current;

adjust the magnitude of the load current toward the target magnitude in response to receiving the command;

determine that the magnitude of the load voltage from the load voltage measurement circuit is approaching an upper voltage threshold; and

maintain the magnitude of the load current constant for a period of time such that the magnitude of the load voltage does not exceed the upper voltage threshold.

20. The load control device of claim 19, wherein the electrical load comprises a light emitting diode (LED) light source.
