1. A radio frequency identification (RFID) system comprising:

  • active or passive transponders each affixable to an object or person and transmitting raw transponder RFID data via radio frequency (RF) signals;

    a reader for receiving the raw transponder RFID data via the (RF) signals from the transponders;

    a plurality of antennas, each having a coverage area for transmitting and receiving said RF signals to and from said reader and said transponders, wherein said antennas are strategically positioned;

    a processor configured to receive the raw transponder RFID data via said antennas via the RF signals and generate new detection information based on the received transponder data, the detection information comprising first sighting and last sighting of a first one of the transponders in a first one of the coverage areas; and

    to use the last sighting data of the first transponder to determine that the first transponder is dwelling in the first coverage area, wherein the processor is further configured to determine whether the first transponder has been detected previously by the system in any of the plurality of coverage areas; and

    a storage device, associated with the processor, that holds the detection information.
