1. A vehicle detection and classification system comprising a plurality of ultra-wideband proximity sensors distributed in a fixed spatial array relative to a road, wherein each sensor is spaced from a nearest adjacent sensor by a respective distance less than a minimum horizontal dimension of a vehicle to be detected but the array has a maximum dimension greater than said minimum horizontal dimension of a vehicle to be detected, each of said sensors being configured to determine presence or absence of a vehicle and to communicate data regarding said presence determination to a data processing system, said data processing system being configured to use data from a plurality of said sensors to detect and classify a vehicle on said road based on at least one dimension of said vehicle, wherein at least of part the array of sensors is disposed beneath or flush with a surface of the road.
