Abstract

An input/output interface for an electronic device receives touch and/or force input and, additionally provides haptic output to a user. In particular the input/output interface is operated in conjunction with an input surface and includes at least one input sensor and at least one haptic output element. In typical embodiments, the input sensor is ground-shifted to prevent damage to the input sensor when the haptic output element is driven.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a protective outer layer configured to receive a user input;

a display positioned below the protective outer layer;

a haptic output element positioned between the display and the protective outer layer, the haptic output element capacitively coupled to the display; and

a controller configured to ground-shift the display to drive the haptic output element.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the display is a capacitive touch sensing display.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a housing;

wherein

the protective outer layer forms at least a portion of the housing.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the display comprises a first set of electrodes separated from a second set of electrodes by a dielectric layer.

5. The apparatus of claim 4, wherein the dielectric layer comprises a piezoelectric material.

6. The apparatus of claim 5, wherein the controller is configured to apply a high voltage signal via at least one electrode of the first set of electrodes to the piezoelectric material to generate a localized haptic output through the protective outer layer.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the haptic output element comprises an electrically conductive sheet.

8. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the electrically conductive sheet is formed from a high-resistivity material.

9. The apparatus of claim 7, wherein the electrically conductive sheet is disposed on a surface of the protective outer layer.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein ground-shift the display to drive the haptic output element comprises:

providing a shifted ground to the display; and

providing a shifted voltage source to the display.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the shifted voltage source is greater than the shifted ground.

12. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the shifted ground and the shifted voltage source are separated by a substantially constant direct current bias.

13. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the shifted ground and the shifted voltage source are configured to follow a waveform in phase that corresponds to a haptic feedback instruction received by the controller.

14. An apparatus comprising:

a touch input surface;

a system voltage source;

a system ground;

a display below the touch input surface and conductively decoupled from the system voltage source and the system ground, the touch display comprising;

a local voltage source; and

a local ground; and

a controller configured to modulate the local voltage source and the local ground of the display with a bias greater than the system voltage source and the system ground to provide an electrostatic haptic output through the touch input surface.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, further comprising a conductive layer disposed above, and conductively decoupled from, the display, the conductive layer capacitively coupled to the display.

16. The apparatus of claim 15, wherein the conductive layer is optically transparent.

17. The apparatus of claim 14, further comprising an input sensor positioned below the display.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the input sensor is a touch input sensor and comprises a piezoelectric body.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, further comprising a first set of electrodes disposed on a first surface of the piezoelectric body and a second set of electrodes disposed on a second surface of the piezoelectric body;

wherein

the controller is configured to;

couple at least one electrode of the first set of electrodes to the local voltage source; and

couple at least one electrode of the second set of electrodes to the local ground.

20. A method of providing haptic output, the method comprising:

receiving a haptic feedback instruction;

increasing a local ground of a display based on the haptic feedback instruction; and

increasing a local voltage source of the display based on the haptic feedback instruction.

21. The method of claim 20, further comprising modulating the local ground and the local voltage source based on the haptic feedback instruction.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein the operation of increasing the local ground is performed prior to the operation of increasing the local voltage source.
