Abstract

A portable vein viewer apparatus may be battery powered and hand-held to reveal patient vasculature information to aid in venipuncture processes. The apparatus comprises a first laser diode emitting infrared light, and a second laser diode emitting only visible wavelengths, wherein vasculature absorbs a portion of the infrared light causing reflection of a contrasted infrared image. A pair of silicon PIN photodiodes, responsive to the contrasted infrared image, causes transmission of a corresponding signal. The signal is processed through circuitry to amplify, sum, and filter the outputted signals, and with the use of an image processing algorithm, the contrasted image is projected onto the patient'"'"'s skin surface using the second laser diode. Revealed information may comprise vein location, depth, diameter, and degree of certainty of vein locations. Projection of vein images may be a positive or a negative image. Venipuncture needles may be coated to provide visibility in projected images.

Claims

1. A vein imaging apparatus, for use in imaging veins of a patient and for locating the veins for a medical practitioner by projecting the vein image onto the patient'"'"'s skin surface, said vein imaging apparatus comprising:

a first laser configured to emit at least a first wavelength of light;

one or more optical detectors, said one or more optical detectors each configured to be responsive to said first wavelength of light, and to receive a contrasted vein image formed by reflected light at said first wavelength, and to convert said image into a signal;

a second laser configured to emit at least a second wavelength of light, being different than said at least a first wavelength of light;

a user interface board comprising;

electronic circuitry;

a display screen;

one or more buttons;

a memory; and

firmware, said firmware configured to display a menu screen list of two or more configuration settings, and parameters for each of said two or more configuration settings, on said display screen, said firmware further configured to permit actuation of said one or more buttons to select and to modify any of said two or more configuration settings to be the default setting for said apparatus, and to permit said selected default settings to be stored in said memory, said two or more configuration settings comprising a plurality of vein visualization settings; and

wherein said electronic circuitry is configured to receive said signal from said one or more optical detectors and to output said signal to said second laser, said electronic circuitry configured to cause said second laser to use said signal to emit said at least a second wavelength of light to project said vein image in accordance with said two or more configuration settings.

2. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said electronic circuitry comprises a microcontroller.

3. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 2, further comprising a scanner configured to scan a beam of said first wavelength of light emitted from said first laser and a beam of said second wavelength of light emitted from said second laser in a pattern, and onto the skin surface.

4. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 3, further comprising a dichroic element configured to align said beams of light from said first and second lasers to be on the same optical axis, to be scanned simultaneously by said scanner.

5. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 4, said two or more configuration settings comprising setting a vein display time out interval.

6. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 5, said two or more configuration settings comprising setting a backlight intensity of said display screen.

7. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 6, said two or more configuration settings comprising setting a name for said apparatus.

8. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 7, said two or more configuration settings comprising setting a language to be used for said apparatus.

9. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 8, further comprising a speaker, said speaker configured to generate a sound when an event occurs;

and wherein said two or more configuration settings comprise setting of a volume for said speaker.

10. A vein imaging apparatus comprising:

a first laser configured to emit a first wavelength of light;

one or more optical detectors, said one or more optical detectors each configured to be responsive to said first wavelength of light, and to receive a contrasted image of veins and surrounding tissue, formed by reflected light at said first wavelength, and further configured to convert said contrasted image into a signal;

a second laser configured to emit a second wavelength of light, being different than said first wavelength of light;

a circuit board comprising;

electronic circuitry;

a memory;

firmware; and

means for modifying any of one or more configuration settings from a list of said configuration settings, wherein said one or more configuration settings comprise a vein visualization setting, and further for modifying one or more default settings of said apparatus;

said memory configured to store said modified one or more default settings; and

wherein said electronic circuitry is configured to receive said signal from said one or more optical detectors and to output said signal to said second laser, said electronic circuitry further configured to cause said second laser to use said signal to emit said second wavelength of light to project said vein image according to said configuration settings.

11. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said electronic circuitry comprises a microcontroller.

12. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 11, further comprising a scanner configured to scan a beam of said first wavelength of light emitted from said first laser, and a beam of said second wavelength of light emitted from said second laser, in a pattern.

13. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 12, further comprising a dichroic element configured to align said beams of light from said first and second lasers to be on the same optical axis, to be scanned simultaneously by said scanner.

14. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 13, further comprising a housing, said housing comprising an opening configured to permit said scanning of said pattern of said aligned beams of light therethrough.

15. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 14, further comprising a photodiode board;

and wherein said one or more optical detectors comprises a pair of silicon PIN photodiodes on said photodiode board, said photodiode board configured to amplify, sum, and filter said signal received from said pair of silicon PIN photodiodes to minimize noise for improved discrimination of one or more contrast edges between the veins and the surrounding tissue.

The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 15 further comprising a lens for each of said first and second silicon PIN photodiodes, each said lens configured to respectively reduce a field of view of each of said silicon PIN photodiodes to have an extent being substantially the same as said pattern scanned by said scanner.

The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 16, wherein said electronic circuitry comprises a complex programmable logic device (CPLD), said CPLD comprising a first and a second compare register, and said CPLD configured to load a pixel count into said first register for said second laser to project said contrasted image, and said CPLD configured to load a pixel count into said second register for said first laser to emit said first wavelength of light.

18. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 17, further comprising a USB chip configured to receive an update to said firmware.

19. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said one or more configuration settings comprise a vein display time out interval setting.

20. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said one or more configuration settings comprise a backlighting intensity setting.

21. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said one or more configuration settings comprise a language setting.

22. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 10, wherein said one or more configuration settings comprise an apparatus name setting.

23. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 10, further comprising a speaker;

and wherein said one or more configuration settings comprise a speaker volume setting.

24. A vein imaging apparatus comprising:

a first light source configured to emit a first wavelength of light;

one or more optical detectors, said one or more optical detectors each configured to be responsive to said first wavelength of light, to receive a vein image formed by differential amounts of absorption of said emitted light at said first wavelength by the subcutaneous veins and surrounding tissue, and said one or more optical detectors further configured to convert said vein image into a signal;

a second light source configured to emit a second wavelength of light, being different than said first wavelength of light;

a user interface comprising;

electronic circuitry;

one or more buttons;

a memory; and

firmware, said user interface configured to control operation of said vein imaging apparatus according to two or more settings, said user interface further configured to permit actuation of said one or more buttons to modify any of said two or more settings to modify operation of said vein imaging apparatus, said two or more settings comprising a plurality of visualization settings;

wherein said electronic circuitry is configured to receive said signal from said one or more optical detectors and to output said signal to said second light source, said electronic circuitry further configured to cause said second light source to use said signal to emit said second wavelength of light to project said vein image according to said plurality of visualization settings; and

wherein said plurality of visualization settings comprise at least two of a first brightness setting, a second brightness setting, and an inverse projection setting for inversion of said projection of said vein image between a positive vein image and a negative vein image.

25. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 24, further comprising a housing having a first portion proximate to a first end of said housing, and a second portion proximate to a second end of said housing;

wherein said first portion of said housing houses said first light source, said second light source, and said one or more optical detectors; and

wherein said second portion of said housing is configured to be narrower than said first portion to be hand-holdable for single-handed lifting and use.

26. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 25, wherein said housing comprises a top surface and a bottom surface, said one or more buttons accessible from said top surface of said housing, wherein said one or more buttons is actuatable with the single hand lifting the device for use;

and said bottom surface of said first portion comprising at least one exit opening for said emission of light from said first light source and for said projection of said vein image by said second light source.

27. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 26, wherein said second portion of said housing comprises a compartment configured to house a battery.

28. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 27, further comprising an electric connector at a distal end of said second housing portion being configured to charge the battery stored in said compartment.

29. A vein imaging apparatus comprising:

a housing having a first portion proximate to a first end of said housing, and a second portion proximate to a second end of said housing;

a first light source configured to emit a first wavelength of light;

one or more optical detectors, said one or more optical detectors each configured to be responsive to said first wavelength of light, to receive a vein image formed by differential amounts of absorption of said emitted light at said first wavelength by the subcutaneous veins and surrounding tissue, and said one or more optical detectors further configured to convert said vein image into a signal;

a second light source configured to emit a second wavelength of light, begin different than said first wavelength of light; and

wherein said housing comprises a top surface and a bottom surface, said top surface of said housing comprising one or more buttons; and

said bottom surface comprising at least one exit opening for said emission of light from said first light source; and

wherein said first portion of said housing houses said first light source, said second light source, said at least one exit opening, and said one or more optical detectors; and

wherein said second portion of said housing is configured to be narrower than said first portion to thereby be hand-holdable for single-handed lifting and use; and

wherein said second portion of said housing comprises a compartment configured to house a battery;

a user interface comprising;

electronic circuitry, a memory, and firmware;

said user interface configured to control operation of said vein imaging apparatus according to two or more settings, said user interface further configured to permit actuation of said one or more buttons to modify any of said two or more settings to modify operation of said vein imaging apparatus, said two or more settings comprising a plurality of visualization settings;

wherein said electronic circuitry is configured to receive said signal from said one or more optical detectors and to output said signals to said second light source, said electronic circuitry further configured to cause said second light source to use said signal to emit said second wavelength of light to project said vein image according to said plurality of visualizations settings; and

wherein said plurality of visualization settings comprise at least two of a first brightness setting, a second brightness setting, a power on mode, a power off mode and an inverse projection setting for inversion of said projection of said vein image between a positive vein image and a negative vein image.

30. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 29, further comprising heat dissipation means within said first portion of said housing.

31. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 29, further comprising metallic heat dissipation means within said first portion of said housing.

32. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 29, further comprising a fan configured to direct air flow out of said first portion of said housing to transfer heat out from said first portion of said housing.

33. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 32, further comprising a heat sink;

wherein said fan is further configured to direct the air flow over said heat sink before being directed out of said first portion of said housing.

34. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 29, further comprising an electric connector at a distal end of said second housing portion being configured to charge the battery stored in said compartment.

35. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 34, further comprising a charging cradle which receives and mechanically secures said second portion of said housing, said charging cradle including a cradle power connector that mates with said electric connector at a distal end of said second housing portion, wherein said charging cradle holds said housing in a vertical position wherein the first portion of the housing is positioned above said second portion of the housing.

36. The vein imaging apparatus according to claim 35 wherein the housing can be removed from said charging cradle with a single hand.
