Abstract

The display includes a transparent display (TD) element or layer such as at least one Transparent Organic Light Emitting Diode (TOLED) element and at least one active shutter (AS) element or layer such as a liquid crystal shutter. The AS may be opaque or transparent. The TD may be transparent or display or emit light in mixtures of color. Black may be displayed by a TD pixel by having the TD be transparent and turning an AS opaque. Each display is composed of elements that can have many states. The states can be used to create different display modes. Devices with these displays can have many form factors and configurations. These devices may change display modes based on spatial context as determined by any one of various environmental and configuration sensors.

Claims

1. A multi-mode dual-sided display element comprising:

a) a first active shutter;

b) a transparent display pixel; and

,

c) a second active shutter;

wherein the first active shutter is independently electrically operable to transition between a substantially transparent state and a substantially opaque state,

wherein the second active shutter is independently electrically operable to transition between a substantially transparent state and a substantially opaque state,

wherein the transparent display pixel is substantially transparent and is independently electrically operable to transition between a state in which the pixel generates light and a state in which the pixel does not generate light, and

wherein the first active shutter is placed on one side of the transparent display pixel and the second active shutter is placed on the opposite side of the transparent display pixel.

2. The multi-mode display element of claim 1, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the first active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state;

ii. instruct the second active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction of the second active shutter.

3. The multi-mode display element of claim 1, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the first active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state;

ii. instruct the second active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction of the first active shutter.

4. The multi-mode display element of claim 1, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the first active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state;

ii. instruct the second active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the transparent display pixel is not generating light.

5. The multi-mode display element of claim 1, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the first active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state;

ii. instruct the second active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction of the second active shutter;

b) the interface to the display controller configured to subsequently;

i. instruct the first active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state;

ii. instruct the second active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state; and

,

iii. instruct the transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction of the first active shutter.

6. The multi-mode display element of claim 1, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the first active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state;

ii. instruct the second active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction of the second active shutter;

b) the interface to the display controller configured to subsequently;

i. instruct the first active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state;

ii. instruct the second active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the transparent display pixel is not generating light.

7. The multi-mode display element of claim 1, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the first active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state;

ii. instruct the second active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction of the second active shutter;

b) the interface to the display controller configured to subsequently;

i. instruct the first active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state;

ii. instruct the second active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the transparent display pixel is not generating light;

c) the interface to the display controller configured to subsequently;

i. instruct the first active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state;

ii. instruct the second active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state; and

,

iii. instruct the transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction of the first active shutter.

8. The multi-mode display element of claim 1, further comprising:

an interface to a display controller of a folding mobile device that is configured to determine that the device is in a folded state based on a sensor input;

wherein the face of the first active shutter faces outward from the device in the folded state, and the face of the second active shutter is contained within the device in the folded state;

wherein, based at least in part on the display controller'"'"'s determination that the folding mobile device is in the folded state;

the first active shutter is configured to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state;

the second active shutter is configured to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state; and

,

the transparent display pixel is configured to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction of the first active shutter.

9. The multi-mode display element of claim 1, further comprising:

an interface to a display controller of a folding mobile device that is configured to determine that the device is in an unfolded state based on a sensor input;

wherein the face of the first active shutter faces outward from the device in the folded state, and the face of the second active shutter is contained within the device in the folded state;

wherein, based at least in part on the display controller'"'"'s determination that the folding mobile device is in the unfolded state;

the first active shutter is configured to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state;

the second active shutter is configured to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

the transparent display pixel is configured to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction of the second active shutter.

10. A multi-mode dual-sided display element comprising:

a) a first transparent display pixel;

b) an active shutter; and

,

c) a second transparent display pixel;

wherein the active shutter is independently electrically operable to transition between a substantially transparent state and a substantially opaque state,

wherein the first transparent display pixel is substantially transparent and is independently electrically operable to transition between a state in which the first pixel generates light and a state in which the first pixel does not generate light,

wherein the second transparent display pixel is substantially transparent and is independently electrically operable to transition between a state in which the second pixel generates light and a state in which the second pixel does not generate light, and

wherein the active shutter is placed in between the first and second transparent display pixels.

11. The multi-mode display element of claim 10, further comprising:

an interface to a display controller of a folding mobile device that is configured to determine that the device is in an unfolded state based on a sensor input;

wherein the face of the first transparent display pixel faces outward from the device in the folded state, and the face of the second transparent display pixel is contained within the device in the folded state;

wherein, based at least in part on the display controller'"'"'s determination that the folding mobile device is in the unfolded state;

the second transparent display pixel is configured to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction away from the active shutter relative to the second transparent display pixel;

the active shutter is configured to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state; and

,

the first transparent display pixel is configured to transition to or maintain a state in which the first transparent display pixel is not generating light.

12. The multi-mode display element of claim 10, further comprising:

an interface to a display controller of a folding mobile device that is configured to determine whether the device is in a folded state based on a sensor input;

wherein the face of the first transparent display pixel faces outward from the device in the folded state, and the face of the second transparent display pixel is contained within the device in the folded state;

wherein, based at least in part on the display controller'"'"'s determination that the folding mobile device is in the folded state;

the first transparent display pixel is configured to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction away from the active shutter relative to the first transparent display pixel.

13. The multi-mode display element of claim 10, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the first transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction away from the active shutter relative to the first transparent display pixel;

ii. instruct the active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state; and

,

iii. instruct the second transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the second transparent display pixel is not generating light.

14. The multi-mode display element of claim 10, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the first transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction away from the active shutter relative to the first transparent display pixel;

ii. instruct the active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state; and

,

iii. instruct the second transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction away from the active shutter relative to the second transparent display pixel.

15. The multi-mode display element of claim 10, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the first transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the first transparent display pixel is not generating light;

ii. instruct the active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the second transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the second transparent display pixel is not generating light.

16. The multi-mode display element of claim 10, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the first transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with a foreground image that is to be displayed in the direction away from the active shutter relative to the first transparent display pixel;

ii. instruct the active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the second transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with a background image that is to be displayed in the direction towards the active shutter relative to the second transparent display pixel.

17. The multi-mode display element of claim 10, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the first transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction away from the active shutter relative to the first transparent display pixel;

ii. instruct the active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state; and

,

iii. instruct the second transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the second transparent display pixel is not generating light;

b) the interface to the display controller configured to subsequently;

i. instruct the first transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the first transparent display pixel is not generating light;

ii. instruct the active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the second transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the second transparent display pixel is not generating light.

18. The multi-mode display element of claim 10, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the first transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction away from the active shutter relative to the first transparent display pixel;

ii. instruct the active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state; and

,

iii. instruct the second transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction away from the active shutter relative to the second transparent display pixel;

b) the interface to the display controller configured to subsequently;

i. instruct the first transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the first transparent display pixel is not generating light;

ii. instruct the active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the second transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the second transparent display pixel is not generating light.

19. The multi-mode display element of claim 10, further comprising:

a) an interface to a display controller configured to;

i. instruct the second transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction away from the active shutter relative to the second transparent display pixel;

ii. instruct the active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state; and

,

iii. instruct the first transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the first transparent display pixel is not generating light;

b) the interface to the display controller configured to subsequently;

i. instruct the first transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the first transparent display pixel is not generating light;

ii. instruct the active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially transparent state; and

,

iii. instruct the second transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the second transparent display pixel is not generating light;

c) the interface to the display controller configured to subsequently;

i. instruct the first transparent display pixel to generate light corresponding with an image that is to be displayed in the direction away from the active shutter relative to the first transparent display pixel;

ii. instruct the active shutter to transition to or maintain a substantially opaque state; and

,

iii. instruct the second transparent display pixel to transition to or maintain a state in which the second transparent display pixel is not generating light.
