Abstract

An apparatus for monitoring a sleep parameter of a user includes an adhesive pad configured to conform to a surface of the user and a flexible element coupled to the adhesive pad. The flexible element includes a conductive fabric, and exhibits a modified electrical property in response to an applied force. The apparatus also includes a power source electrically coupled to the flexible element, and an electrical circuit electrically coupled to the power source and the flexible conductive element. The electrical circuit is configured to detect, during use, a change in an electrical property of the flexible element.

Claims

1. An apparatus for monitoring a sleep parameter of a user, the apparatus comprising:

an adhesive pad configured to conform to a surface of the user;

a first flexible element coupled to the adhesive pad and extending, in a first direction, from the adhesive pad, the first flexible element including a conductive fabric material and configured to exhibit a modified electrical property in response to an applied force;

a power source electrically coupled to the first flexible element;

an electrical circuit electrically coupled to the power source and the first flexible element, the electrical circuit configured to detect, during use, a change in an electrical property of the first flexible element; and

a second flexible element not configured to exhibit a modified electrical property in response to an applied force, the second flexible element extending, in a second direction substantially parallel to the first direction, from the adhesive pad.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first flexible element is in a neutral stress state prior to being coupled to the adhesive pad, and is in one of a compressed state or a tensile state upon being coupled to the adhesive pad.

The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the one of the compressed state or the tensile state is a first stress state, and during use, the first flexible element transitions from the first stress state, through the neutral stress state, to a second stress state different from the first stress state, in response to an inhalation of the user.

The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the one of the compressed state or the tensile state is a first stress state, the electrical circuit configured to detect the change in the electrical property of the first flexible element during a transition from the first stress state to the neutral stress state.

The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the one of the compressed state or the tensile state is a first stress state, the electrical circuit configured to detect the change in the electrical property of the first flexible element during the transition from the neutral stress state to the tensile state.

6. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the one of the compressed state or the tensile state is a first stress state, and during use, the first flexible element transitions from the tensile state, through the neutral stress state, to the compressed state, in response to an exhalation of the user.

The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the one of the compressed state or the tensile state is a first stress state, the electrical circuit configured to detect the change in the electrical property of the first flexible element during the transition from the neutral stress state to the compressed state.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a communication interface configured to connect with a portable electronic device.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the change in the electrical property of the first flexible element is responsive to a tension applied to the first flexible element during use of the apparatus.

10. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the electrical property of the first flexible element comprises at least one of a resistance or a reactance of the first flexible element.

11. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising at least one of:

a motion sensor configured to monitor a position of at least a portion of the user;

a pulse oximeter configured to measure an oxygen saturation level of the user;

or

a microphone configured to detect ambient noises during use of the apparatus.

12. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a third flexible element.

The apparatus of claim 12, wherein the first flexible element extends from the adhesive pad to the second flexible element, the second flexible element extends from the first flexible element to the third flexible element, and the third flexible element extends from the second flexible element to the adhesive pad.

14. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the adhesive pad is a first adhesive pad, the apparatus further comprising a second adhesive pad, the first flexible element extending from the first adhesive pad to the second adhesive pad.

15. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the adhesive pad is a first adhesive pad, the apparatus further comprising a second adhesive pad, the second flexible element extending from the first adhesive pad to the second adhesive pad.

16. An apparatus for monitoring a sleep parameter of a user, the apparatus comprising:

an adhesive pad configured to conform to a surface of the user;

a first stretchable element coupled to the adhesive pad, the first stretchable element including a conductive fabric material and configured to exhibit a modified electrical property in response to an applied force;

a power source electrically coupled to the first stretchable element;

an electrical circuit electrically coupled to the power source and the first stretchable element, the electrical circuit configured to detect, during use, a change in an electrical property of the first stretchable element;

a second stretchable element coupled to the adhesive pad; and

a third stretchable element coupled to the adhesive pad,

the first stretchable element extending in a first direction to the second stretchable element, the second stretchable element extending, in a second direction different from the first direction, from the first stretchable element to the third stretchable element, and the third stretchable element extending, in a third direction different from the second direction, from the second stretchable element.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the first stretchable element is in a neutral stress state prior to being coupled to the adhesive pad, and is in one of a compressed state or a tensile state upon being coupled to the adhesive pad.

The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the one of the compressed state or the tensile state is a first stress state, and during use, the first stretchable element transitions from the first stress state, through the neutral stress state, to a second stress state different from the first stress state, in response to an inhalation of the user.

The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the one of the compressed state or the tensile state is a first stress state, the electrical circuit configured to detect the change in the electrical property of the first stretchable element during a transition from the first stress state to the neutral stress state.

The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the one of the compressed state or the tensile state is a first stress state, the electrical circuit configured to detect the change in the electrical property of the first stretchable element during a transition from the neutral stress state to a second stress state different from the first stress state.

21. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the one of the compressed state or the tensile state is a first stress state, the electrical circuit configured to detect the change in the electrical property of the first stretchable element during a transition from the neutral stress state to the first stress state.

22. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein during use, the first stretchable element transitions from a tensile state, through a neutral stress state, to a compressed state, in response to an exhalation of the user.

23. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising:

a communication interface configured to connect with a portable electronic device.

24. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the change in the electrical property of the first stretchable element is responsive to a tension applied to the first stretchable element during use of the apparatus.

25. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the electrical property of the first stretchable element comprises at least one of a resistance or a reactance of the first stretchable element.

26. The apparatus of claim 16, further comprising at least one of:

a motion sensor configured to monitor a position of at least a portion of the user;

a pulse oximeter configured to measure an oxygen saturation level of the user;

or

a microphone configured to detect ambient noises during use of the apparatus.
