Abstract

A touch sensor detector system and method incorporating an interpolated sensor array is disclosed. The system and method utilize a touch sensor array (TSA) configured to detect proximity/contact/pressure (PCP) via a variable impedance array (VIA) electrically coupling interlinked impedance columns (IIC) coupled to an array column driver (ACD), and interlinked impedance rows (IIR) coupled to an array row sensor (ARS). The ACD is configured to select the IIC based on a column switching register (CSR) and electrically drive the IIC using a column driving source (CDS). The VIA conveys current from the driven IIC to the IIC sensed by the ARS. The ARS selects the IIR within the TSA and electrically senses the IIR state based on a row switching register (RSR). Interpolation of ARS sensed current/voltage allows accurate detection of TSA PCP and/or spatial location.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

generating multiple currents along multiple current paths in response to sensing a touch; and

collecting the multiple currents in a common electrical sink.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

measuring current flowing into the common electrical sink.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein powering a first set of the multiple paths with a first electrode that is powered on by a drive circuitry and powering a second set of the multiple paths by way of one or more voltage dividers connected to the first electrode.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the amount of current generated by a current path is inversely proportional to the path'"'"'s distance from the first electrode.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the amount of current generated by a current path is directly proportional to the force applied by the touch.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein causing each path of the multiple paths to contribute current to the current sink in response to the touch.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein using pressure-sensitive resistive elements in the multiple paths.

8. A touch sensor, comprising:

an array of drive electrodes including a first electrode coupled to a drive circuitry and a second electrode coupled to the first electrode by way of a voltage divider;

an array of sense electrodes including a third electrode connected to a current sink by way of a first path and a fourth electrode connected to the current sink by way of a different second path;

a first sense element connected to the first and third electrodes; and

a second sense element connected to the second and the fourth electrodes;

wherein,

the first and the second electrodes are configured to power on simultaneously; and

the third and the fourth electrodes are configured to simultaneously output currents to the current sink in response to the first and the second elements sensing a touch.

9. The touch sensor of claim 8, wherein the amount of output current generated by the first and the second electrodes is proportional to the force applied by the touch.

10. The touch sensor of claim 8, wherein the amount of output current generated by the fourth electrode is inversely proportional to the distance between the first sense element and the second sense element.

11. The touch sensor of claim 8, wherein the sense elements include pressure-sensitive resistive elements.

12. The touch sensor of claim 8, wherein the different second path includes a resistor connected between the third and the fourth electrodes, wherein the resistor forms a portion of a current divider.

13. The touch sensor of claim 8, further comprising:

a sense circuitry configured to measure current flowing into the electrical sink.

14. A touch sensor, comprising:

a sensing area including a plurality of drive electrodes including a first electrode connected to a drive circuitry and a second electrode connected to the first electrode by way of a first voltage divider, and including a plurality of sense electrodes connected to a first current sink;

the plurality of drive electrodes including a third electrode connected to the drive circuitry and a fourth electrode connected to the third electrode by way of a second voltage divider, and including a plurality of sense electrodes connected to a second current sink;

a first plurality of sense elements connected to the first and the second electrodes, wherein the first plurality of sense elements are configured to simultaneously generate multiple currents along multiple paths connected to the first electrical sink in response to sensing a touch; and

a second plurality of sense elements connected to the third and the fourth electrodes, wherein the second plurality of sense elements are configured to simultaneously generate multiple currents along multiple paths connected to the second electrical sink in response to sensing a touch.

15. The touch sensor of claim 14, wherein the drive circuitry is configured to alternately power on the first electrode and the third electrode at different times.

16. The touch sensor of claim 14, wherein the drive circuitry is configured to simultaneously power on the first electrode and the third electrode at the same time.

17. The touch sensor of claim 14, further comprising:

the plurality of drive electrodes including a fifth electrode connected to the drive circuitry and a sixth electrode connected to the fifth electrode by way of a third voltage divider, and including a plurality of sense electrodes connected to the first current sink; and

a third plurality of sense elements, wherein the third plurality of sense elements are configured to simultaneously generate multiple currents along multiple paths connected to the first electrical sink in response to sensing a touch.

18. The touch sensor of claim 17, wherein the drive circuitry is configured to power on the third electrode more frequently than the first and the fifth electrodes.

19. The touch sensor of claim 17, wherein the drive circuitry is configured to alternately power on the first electrode and the fifth electrodes at different times.
