1. A system, comprising:
- at least one sensor configured to generate sensor data associated with a position of a person on a support surface during a series of (a) pressure-on periods in which the person is in a pressure-on position in which a particular side or area of the person'"'"'s body is pressurized by the support surface, and (b) relief periods in which the person is in a relief position in which the particular side or area of the person'"'"'s body is not pressurized by the support surface; and
a processor coupled to the at least one sensor and configured to;
receive the sensor data from the at least one sensor via wired or wireless communications;
detect changes in the person'"'"'s position over time based on the received sensor data;
determine a relief period time limit for each respective relief period based on a proportional relationship between the relief period time limit and a corresponding pressure-on time including a measured duration of a pressure-on period immediately preceding the respective relief period, such that different relief period time limits are calculated for different relief periods, depending on the respective pressure-on time corresponding with each respective relief period; and
for each respective relief period;
determine an end of the respective relief period based on a detected change in the person'"'"'s position away from the relief position;
determine whether the end of the respective relief period satisfies the relief period time limit; and
generate and communicate a notification if it is determined that the end of the respective relief period does not satisfy the relief period time limit.

Abstract
A monitoring system and method tracks a patient'"'"'s position over time and ensures that proper turning or other manipulation is done within the time prescribed. Preferably, the techniques herein continuously monitor patient position and alert medical or other personnel of the need for turning or other patient manipulation. The system may be implemented within a medical or other care facility, or within a patient'"'"'s home.

-
at least one sensor configured to generate orientation data associated with an orientation of a person; and a processor coupled to the at least one sensor and configured to; receive the orientation data from the at least one sensor via wired or wireless communications; determine a position of the person based on the received orientation data; identify changes in the position of the person over time based on the received orientation data, including a series of changes between a first position that pressurizes a particular side or area of the person'"'"'s body and a relief position other than the first position and which does not pressurize the particular side or area of the person'"'"'s body; measure a first position time duration spent by the person in the first position associated with the particular side or area of the person'"'"'s body; dynamically determine, in real time at an identified change from the first position to the relief position, a minimum relief period time limit for a relief period in the relief position based on a defined proportional relationship between the relief period time limit and the measured first position time duration, such that the dynamically determined minimum relief period time limit increases as a proportional function of an increase in the first position time duration; and during the relief period; determine an end of the relief period based on a determined change in the person'"'"'s position away from the relief position; determine whether the end of the respective relief period satisfies the minimum relief period time limit; and generate and communicate a notification in response to determining that the end of the respective relief period does not satisfy the minimum relief period time limit. - View Dependent Claims (19)
