Abstract

Disclosed are various embodiments for preventing theft of energy transmitted as a guided surface wave along the surface of a terrestrial medium, by pulsing the transmitted energy and protecting authorized devices from the pulse. In one embodiment, a guided surface wave receive structure is configured to obtain electrical energy from a guided surface wave. An electrical load coupled to the guided surface wave receive structure. The electrical load is experienced as a load at an excitation source coupled to a guided surface waveguide probe that is generating the guided surface wave with an electrical field strength that may be selectively increased. A pulse protection circuit is employed to selectively protect the electrical load from an increase in electrical energy received by the guided surface wave receive structure when the electrical field strength is selectively increased, while unprotected circuits may be damaged or disrupted by the pulse.

Claims

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a guided surface wave receive structure configured to obtain electrical energy in a form of a Zenneck surface wave substantially mode-matched to a Zenneck surface wave mode of a surface of a terrestrial medium based at least in part upon the guided surface wave receive structure providing a phase delay (Φ

) that matches a wave tilt angle (Ψ

) associated with a complex Brewster angle of incidence (θ

_i,B) associated with the surface of the terrestrial medium;

an electrical load coupled to the guided surface wave receive structure, the electrical load being experienced as a load at an excitation source coupled to a guided surface waveguide probe generating the Zenneck surface wave, wherein an electrical field strength of the Zenneck surface wave is selectively increased; and

a pulse protection circuit employed to selectively protect the electrical load from an increase in electrical energy received by the guided surface wave receive structure when the electrical field strength is selectively increased.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the pulse protection circuit further comprises an attenuation circuit that is selectively coupled between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load.

3. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the attenuation circuit further comprises a variable resistor network.

4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the attenuation circuit further comprises a discrete step resistor network.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the pulse protection circuit further comprises a transformer that is coupled between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load, the transformer having a plurality of winding ratios that are selectively switched.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the pulse protection circuit further comprises a plurality of transformers, each having its own winding ratio, the plurality of transformers selectively coupled between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the pulse protection circuit further comprises:

a backup power supply circuit that is selectively coupled to the electrical load; and

a switch that opens a circuit pathway between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load.

The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the pulse protection circuit further comprises an amplitude detector circuit coupled between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load, the amplitude detector circuit configured to detect changes in the electrical energy received by the guided surface wave receive structure.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the guided surface wave receive structure further comprises any one of:

a linear probe;

a tuned resonator;

or

a magnetic coil.

10. An apparatus, comprising:

an excitation source connected through a coupling network to a guided surface waveguide probe that generates a plurality of electromagnetic fields that are substantially mode-matched to a Zenneck surface wave mode of a surface of a lossy conducting medium based at least in part upon the guided surface waveguide probe providing a phase delay (Φ

) that matches a wave tilt angle (Ψ

) associated with a complex Brewster angle of incidence (θ

_i,B) of the lossy conducting medium, and selectively increases a field strength of the electromagnetic fields by selectively adjusting a pulse generation circuit.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, further comprising one or more charge terminal.

12. A method, comprising:

generating a Zenneck surface wave with a guided surface waveguide probe coupled to an excitation source, the Zenneck surface wave comprising a plurality of electromagnetic fields that are substantially mode-matched to a Zenneck surface wave mode of a surface of a terrestrial medium based at least in part on the guided surface wave probe providing a phase delay (Φ

) that matches a wave tilt angle (Ψ

) associated with a complex Brewster angle of incidence (θ

_i,B) associated with the terrestrial medium, wherein a field strength of the electromagnetic fields is selectively increased by selectively adjusting a pulsing circuit;

receiving electrical energy from the Zenneck surface wave with a guided surface wave receive structure;

delivering the electrical energy through a circuit pathway to an electrical load that is experienced as a load at the excitation source; and

protecting the electrical load with a pulse protection circuit under conditions when a field strength of the Zenneck surface wave is a selectively increased.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein protecting the electrical load with the pulse protection circuit further comprises:

determining a pulse time when the guided surface wave receive structure will experience an increase in the field strength;

opening the circuit pathway between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load during the pulse time;

inserting an attenuation circuit into the circuit pathway between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load during the pulse time; and

decoupling the attenuation circuit from the circuit pathway and closing the circuit pathway between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load after a duration of the pulse time.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein protecting the electrical load with the pulse protection circuit further comprises:

coupling a transformer, having a plurality of winding ratio settings that are selectively switchable, between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load;

setting the transformer to a first winding ratio;

determining a pulse time when the guided surface wave receive structure will experience an increase in the field strength;

switching the transformer to a second winding ratio during the pulse time; and

reverting the transformer to the first winding ratio after a duration of the pulse time.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the first winding ratio is greater than the second winding ratio.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein protecting the electrical load with the pulse protection circuit further comprises:

coupling a first transformer, with a first winding ratio, between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load;

determining a pulse time when the guided surface wave receive structure will experience an increase in the field strength;

decoupling the first transformer from between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load and coupling a second transformer with a second winding ratio between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load, during the pulse time; and

decoupling the second transformer and recoupling the first transformer after a duration of the pulse time.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the first winding ratio is greater than the second winding ratio.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein protecting the electrical load with the pulse protection circuit further comprises:

determining a pulse time when the guided surface wave receive structure will experience an increased field strength;

opening the circuit pathway between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load during the pulse time;

coupling a backup power supply circuit to the electrical load during the pulse time; and

closing the circuit pathway between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load, and decoupling the backup power supply circuit, after a duration of the pulse time.

19. The method of claim 12, wherein protecting the electrical load with the pulse protection circuit further comprises:

connecting an amplitude detector circuit between the guided surface wave receive structure and the electrical load,

configuring the amplitude detector circuit to detect changes in the electrical energy received by the guided surface wave receive structure.

20. The method of claim 12, wherein the wave front is incident at the complex Brewster angle of incidence (θ

_i,B) of the terrestrial medium at a Hankel crossover distance from the guided surface waveguide probe.
