1. A method of selecting an intraocular lens (IOL) configured to be implanted in a patient'"'"'s eye, the method comprising:

  • obtaining at least one physical or optical characteristic of the patient'"'"'s eye using a diagnostic instrument; and

    selecting an IOL having an optic with a shape factor that is configured to focus light incident along a direction parallel to an optical axis at a fovea to produce a functional foveal image and is configured to improve image quality at a peripheral retinal location disposed at a distance from the fovea by reducing at least one optical aberration at the peripheral retinal location, the peripheral retinal location having an eccentricity between 1 and 30 degrees, an object in the central vision zone and an object in the peripheral vision zone defining a visual field angle, wherein the shape factor of the IOL is selected based on the at least one physical or optical characteristic of the patient'"'"'s eye, and wherein a horizontal coma of the optic varies linearly with visual field angle.
