1. An apparatus comprising:

  • a first housing that contains a first circuit board, a wireless communication subsystem and a pneumatic engine,wherein the first circuit board includes;

    a first microprocessor;

    a first digital interface that is operably coupled to the first microprocessor; and

    wherein the wireless communication subsystem is operably coupled to the first microprocessor and the wireless communication subsystem is configured to transmit a representation of each of a plurality of vital signs via a short distance wireless communication path;

    a second housing having a second circuit board and a camera, the second circuit board including;

    a second digital interface, the second digital interface being operably coupled to the first digital interface; and

    a second microprocessor operably coupled to the second digital interface, the second microprocessor being configured to estimate the plurality of vital signs,a third housing comprising a cuff bladder and a microdynamic light scattering sensor,wherein the cuff bladder that is operably coupled to the pneumatic engine and that expands and contracts in response to air pressure from the pneumatic engine;

    wherein the microdynamic light scattering sensor is in the cuff bladder, wherein the microdynamic light scattering sensor includes two photo diode receivers and one laser transmitter that is operable to generate a laser signal and having a geometry that creates direct signal scattering reflection of the laser signal into the two photo diode receivers;

    a fourth housing including a photoplethysmogram sensor, wherein the photoplethysmogram sensor includes a source-detector assembly having a transmitter of electromagnetic radiation at two or more frequencies in a 700-1300 nm range and a receiver of electromagnetic radiation in the 700-1300 nm range to measure an amount of electromagnetic radiation that is absorbed by a subject, the subject being positioned between the transmitter of electromagnetic radiation and the receiver of electromagnetic radiation, the amount of electromagnetic radiation that is absorbed by the subject being an indication of an amount of oxygen in the subject, the source-detector assembly including a light shielding that shields extraneous near-infrared and extraneous ambient light such that electromagnetic energy entering the subject as well as the electromagnetic energy detected will be only in the 700-1300 nm range;

    the longitudinal axis of the third housing is not coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the fourth housing,wherein the first microprocessor is operably coupled to the pneumatic engine, the cuff bladder, the photoplethysmogram sensor and the microdynamic light scattering sensor;

    wherein the third housing is mounted on the first housing,wherein the fourth housing is mounted on the first housing.
