Abstract

The present disclosure relates to noninvasive methods, devices, and systems for measuring various blood constituents or analytes, such as glucose. In an embodiment, a light source comprises LEDs and super-luminescent LEDs. The light source emits light at at least wavelengths of about 1610 nm, about 1640 nm, and about 1665 nm. In an embodiment, the detector comprises a plurality of photodetectors arranged in a special geometry comprising one of a substantially linear substantially equal spaced geometry, a substantially linear substantially non-equal spaced geometry, and a substantially grid geometry.

Claims

1. A noninvasive optical physiological measurement device adapted to be worn by a wearer, the noninvasive optical physiological measurement device providing an indication of a physiological parameter of the wearer, the noninvasive optical physiological measurement device comprising:

one or more light emitters;

a substrate having a surface;

a wall extending from the surface;

at least four detectors arranged on the surface and spaced apart from each other, at least one of the at least four detectors configured to output data or one or more signals responsive to light from at least one of the one or more light emitters attenuated by body tissue, the data or one or more signals including information sufficient to determine a physiological parameter of the wearer; and

a cover arranged to cover at least a portion of the surface of the substrate, the cover comprising a protrusion that extends over all of the at least four detectors arranged on the surface of the substrate, at least part of the cover being light permeable.

2. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 1, wherein at least the part of the cover is light permeable to allow light to reach at least one of the at least four detectors.

3. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 2, wherein the wall operably connects to the substrate on one side, and operably connects to the cover on an opposite side, thereby at least partially enclosing the at least four detectors.

4. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 3, wherein the wall creates one or more gaps between the surface and the cover.

5. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 4, wherein at least a portion the cover is comprised of a sufficiently rigid material to cause tissue of the wearer to conform to at least a portion of a shape of the cover.

6. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 5, wherein the protrusion comprises a convex protrusion.

7. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 6, wherein the at least four detectors are evenly spaced from one another.

8. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 7, wherein the physiological parameter is pulse rate.

9. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 8 further comprising:

one or more openings that allow light to pass through to the at least four detectors.

The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 9, wherein the noninvasive optical physiological measurement device is comprised as part of a mobile monitoring device, wherein the mobile monitoring device includes at least a touch-screen display, a strap configured to facilitate attachment of at least part of the mobile monitoring device to an arm of the wearer, and a processor configured to receive the data or one or more signals and cause communication of physiological measurement information to a user interface displayed on the touch-screen display.

11. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 1, wherein the attenuated light is reflected by the tissue.

12. A noninvasive optical physiological measurement device adapted to be worn by a wearer providing an indication of a physiological parameter of the wearer, the noninvasive optical physiological measurement device comprising:

one or more light emitters;

a substrate comprising a surface;

a wall protruding from the surface;

at least four detectors arranged on the surface, wherein a first detector is arranged spaced apart from a second detector, and a third detector arranged spaced apart from a fourth detector; and

a cover comprising a protrusion, wherein the protrusion extends over all of the at least four detectors, and

wherein at least one of the at least four detectors is configured to output data or one or more signals responsive to light from at least one of the one or more light emitters attenuated by body tissue, the data or one or more signals including information sufficient to determine a physiological parameter of the wearer.

13. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 12, wherein the physiological parameter is pulse rate.

14. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 13, wherein at least one or more portions of the protrusion are light permeable.

15. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 14, wherein the wall operably connects to the substrate and the cover, thereby creating one or more gaps in which the at least four detectors are located.

The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 15, wherein the protrusion is convex and operable to conform tissue of the wearer to at least a portion of an external surface shape of the protrusion when the noninvasive optical physiological measurement device is worn by the wearer.

17. The noninvasive optical physiological measurement device of claim 12, wherein the attenuated light is reflected by the tissue.

18. A noninvasive optical physiological sensing system comprising:

one or more light emitters configured to emit light into tissue of a user;

a substrate including a planar surface;

a wall extending from and surrounding at least a portion of the planar surface;

at least four detectors arranged on the planar surface of the substrate and within the wall;

a cover comprising a protrusion, wherein the protrusion extends over all of the at least four detectors;

a touch-screen display; and

a processor configured to;

receive data or one or more signals from at least one of the at least four detectors;

determine measurements of a physiological parameter of the user; and

output information indicative of the measurements of the physiological parameter for display in a user interface configured to be displayed on the touch-screen display.

19. The noninvasive optical physiological sensing system of claim 18, wherein the cover is connected to the substrate by the wall, and wherein the cover, the wall, and the substrate together hermetically seal the at least four detectors.

The noninvasive optical physiological sensing system of claim 19, wherein at least a portion of the cover is comprised of a sufficiently rigid material to be operable to conform tissue of the user to at least a portion of a shape of the cover when the noninvasive optical physiological sensing system is worn by the user.

The noninvasive optical physiological sensing system of claim 20, wherein the at least one of the at least four detectors is configured to output the data or one or more signals responsive to light attenuated by body tissue, wherein the data or one or more signals include information sufficient to determine a physiological parameter of the user, and wherein the physiological parameter is pulse rate.

22. The noninvasive optical physiological sensing system of claim 21 further comprising:

a magnet configured to be used as a connecting mechanism.

23. The noninvasive optical physiological sensing system of claim 21 further comprising:

a strap configured to facilitate attachment of at least part of the noninvasive optical physiological sensing system to an arm of the user.

24. The noninvasive optical physiological sensing system of claim 21, wherein the processor is further configured to:

cause output of information indicative of the measurements of the physiological parameter to a mobile phone.
