Firing trigger lockout arrangements for surgical instruments
First Claim
1. A surgical instrument system, comprising:
- a first component, comprising;
a first shaft portion;
a first drive portion;
a first connection portion comprising a bayonet connection; and
an indicator adjacent said bayonet connection;
a second component comprising a second shaft portion, a second drive portion, and a second connection portion, wherein said second connection portion is engageable with said first connection portion, wherein relative rotational motion between said bayonet connection and said second connection portion rotatably connects said second component to said first component and rotatably connects said first drive portion and said second drive portion;
a motor configured to apply a drive force to said second drive portion; and
a controller configured to detect whether said second component is properly connected to said first component, wherein said controller is responsive to a first set of operating instructions when said controller detects that said second component is properly connected to said first component and identifies said second component, wherein said controller is configured to activate said indicator when said controller detects that said second component is not identified by said controller, and wherein said controller is responsive to a second set of operating instructions when said controller does not identify said second component in order to limit the drive force that said motor can apply to said second drive portion to perform a firing motion.

Abstract
A surgical instrument system can comprise, one, a surgical instrument including a handle, a shaft comprising a distal end, and a trigger and, two, an end effector attachable to the shaft. The instrument can further include a firing member and a motor configured to move the firing member toward the distal end, wherein the trigger is configured to operate the motor. The surgical instrument system can further include a plurality of sensors configured to detect one or more error conditions, a plurality of indicators, and a controller in communication with the plurality of sensors and the indicators, wherein the controller is configured to selectively activate the indicators to indicate the error conditions detected. A surgical instrument can comprise a plurality of actuators and a plurality of actuator locks, wherein the controller can actuate one or more of the actuator locks to indicate the error condition detected.

5. A surgical instrument system, comprising:
-
a first component comprising a first connection portion; a second component comprising a second connection portion, wherein said second connection portion is engageable with said first connection portion to connect said second component to said first component; a firing member; a motor configured to apply rotary actuation motions to said firing member; a firing trigger actuatable to advance said firing member; a trigger lock; and a controller configured to detect whether said second component is properly connected to said first component and configured to identify said second component, wherein said controller is responsive to a set of operating instructions after said controller identifies said second component, wherein said controller is configured to actuate said trigger lock to prevent said firing trigger from being actuated when said controller does not identify said second component in order to indicate to the user of the surgical instrument system that said second component is not identified, and wherein said controller is responsive to a different set of operating instructions as a result of the controller not identifying said second component in order to provide additional functions which are configured to limit the maximum force of said motor in order to perform a firing motion. - View Dependent Claims (6)

7. A surgical instrument system, comprising:
-
a first component, comprising; a first shaft portion; a first drive portion; a first connection portion comprising a bayonet connection; and an indicator adjacent said bayonet connection; a second component comprising a second shaft portion, a second drive portion, and a second connection portion, wherein said second connection portion is engageable with said first connection portion, wherein relative rotational motion between said bayonet connection and said second connection portion rotatably connects said second component to said first component and rotatably connects said first drive portion and said second drive portion; an electric motor configured to generate an actuation motion; and a controller configured to detect whether said second component is properly connected to said first component and configured to identify said second component, wherein said controller is configured to activate said indicator when said controller detects that said second component is not identified by said controller, wherein said controller is responsive to a set of operating instructions when said controller detects that said second component is properly connected to said first component, and wherein said controller is responsive to a different set of operating instructions in order to perform additional functions of the surgical instrument system after generating an error response if said controller does not identify said second component in order to limit the maximum force of said electric motor to perform a firing motion.
