Abstract

In accordance with one or more embodiments, a system includes an array of antennas. A plurality of transceivers is configured to generate first signals, in response to control signals. A controller is configured to generate the control signals to control, via the plurality of transceivers, an antenna aperture of the array of antennas. The array of antennas is configured to generate, in response to first signals, radiated waves according to the antenna aperture of the array of antennas, the radiated waves inducing a first guided electromagnetic wave that is guided by a surface of a transmission medium and propagates along the transmission medium without requiring an electrical return path.

Claims

1. A system comprising:

an array of antennas;

a plurality of transceivers configured to generate first signals, in response to control signals;

a controller configured to generate the control signals to control, via the plurality of transceivers, an antenna aperture of the array of antennas;

wherein the array of antennas is configured to generate, in response to first signals, radiated waves according to the antenna aperture of the array of antennas, the radiated waves inducing a first guided electromagnetic wave that is guided by a surface of a transmission medium and propagates along the transmission medium without requiring an electrical return path.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the array of antennas is further configured to:

receive received waves in response to a second electromagnetic wave generated by a remote system, wherein the second electromagnetic wave is guided by the surface of the transmission medium and conveys a channel quality indicator, wherein the second electromagnetic wave propagates along the transmission medium; and

generate second signals in response to the second electromagnetic wave;

wherein the plurality of transceivers is further configured to demodulate the second signals and to extract the channel quality indicator; and

wherein the controller is further configured to generate the control signals, based on the channel quality indicator.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the array of antennas includes a plurality of concentric rings of antennas.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the control signals control signal gains of subsets of the transceivers corresponding to each of the plurality of concentric rings of antennas.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the antenna aperture of the antenna array has an aperture distribution and wherein the signal gains control the radiated wave according to the aperture distribution.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the array of antennas comprises an array of polyrod antennas.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the array of polyrod antennas each include a tapered dielectric rod.

8. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a circuit board that supports the array of antennas.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a plurality of feedlines that couple the array of antennas to the plurality of transceivers.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the first signals are in a microwave range of frequencies.

11. A method comprising:

generating, via an array of antennas and in response to first signals, radiated waves according to an antenna aperture of the array of antennas, the radiated waves inducing a first guided electromagnetic wave that is guided by a surface of a transmission medium and propagates along the transmission medium without requiring an electrical return path;

generating the first signals in response to control signals; and

generating the control signals to control, via amplitudes of the first signals, the antenna aperture of the array of antennas.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

receiving, via the array of antennas, received waves in response to a second electromagnetic wave generated by a remote system, wherein the second electromagnetic wave is guided by the surface of the transmission medium and conveys a channel quality indicator, wherein the second electromagnetic wave propagates along the transmission medium; and

generating, via the array of antennas, second signals in response to the second electromagnetic wave; and

demodulating the second signals to extract the channel quality indicator; and

wherein generating the control signals, is based on the channel quality indicator.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the array of antennas includes a plurality of concentric rings of antennas.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the control signals to control the amplitudes of the first signals corresponding to each of the plurality of concentric rings of antennas.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the antenna aperture of the antenna array has an aperture distribution and wherein the amplitudes of the first signals control the radiated wave according to the aperture distribution.

16. The method of claim 11, wherein the array of antennas comprises an array of polyrod antennas.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the array of polyrod antennas each include a tapered dielectric rod.

18. The method of claim 11, wherein the first signals are in a microwave range of frequencies.

19. A system comprising:

an array of antennas configured to generate, in response to first signals, radiated waves according to an antenna aperture of the array of antennas, the radiated waves inducing a first guided electromagnetic wave that is guided by a surface of a transmission medium and propagates along the transmission medium without requiring an electrical return path;

means for generating the first signals, in response to control signals; and

means for generating the control signals to control, via the means for generating, the antenna aperture of the array of antennas.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the array of antennas further receive, received waves in response to a second electromagnetic wave generated by a remote system, wherein the second electromagnetic wave is guided by the surface of the transmission medium and conveys a channel quality indicator, wherein the second electromagnetic wave propagates along the transmission medium, and the array of antennas generate second signals in response to the second electromagnetic wave;

and

the system further comprises;

means for demodulating the second signals to extract the channel quality indicator; and

wherein the means for generating the control signals operates based on the channel quality indicator.
