1. An apparatus to decode an encoded video signal with at least one processor, the apparatus comprising:

  • an input to receive the encoded video signal; and

    a processor configured to decode the encoded video signal, the encoded video signal comprising samples from more than one image in a frame, the frame comprising interleaved groups of samples from a first image and a second image, wherein to decode the encoded video signal the processor is further configured to;

    identify a de-interleaving format from a plurality of interleaving formats for the interleaved groups of samples, the de-interleaving format identified by a de-interleaving identifier encoded in the encoded video signal;

    determine, based on the de-interleaving identifier, that the interleaved groups of samples from the first image and the second image are top-bottom interleaved;

    identify at least one region of the frame for de-interleaving, the at least one region identified by a sub-sampling arrangement map identifier encoded in the encoded video signal; and

    determine, based on the sub-sampling arrangement map identifier, that the first image and the second image are quincunx-sampled.
