Abstract

A pallet impact station includes a frame, at least one pendulum swing arm rotatably coupled to the frame, a carriage assembly carried by the at least one pendulum swing arm for impacting a pallet, and a latching mechanism extending between the frame and the at least one pendulum swing arm. The latching mechanism disengages the at least one pendulum swing arm at a raised position so that the carriage assembly impacts the pallet. A controller operates the latching mechanism to disengage the at least one pendulum swing arm.

Claims

1. A pallet impact station comprising:

a frame;

at least one pendulum swing arm rotatably coupled to said frame;

a carriage assembly carried by said at least one pendulum swing arm and comprising an adjustable impact plate for impacting a pallet;

a latching mechanism extending between said frame and said at least one pendulum swing arm, and configured to disengage said at least one pendulum swing arm at a raised positon so that said carriage assembly impacts the pallet; and

a controller configured to operate said latching mechanism to disengage said at least one pendulum swing arm.

2. The pallet impact station according to claim 1 wherein said latching mechanism is further configured to engage said at least one pendulum swing arm when said carriage assembly is in a lowered position, and raise said carriage assembly to the raised positon.

3. The pallet impact station according to claim 1 further comprising a movement sensor carried by said frame and configured to generate a signal corresponding to how high said carriage assembly is raised by said latching mechanism;

and wherein said controller is further configured to disengage said at least one pendulum swing arm when a height of said carriage assembly corresponds to a desired release height so that a predetermined impact force strikes the pallet.

4. The pallet impact station according to claim 3 wherein said controller is further configured to determine the desired release height based on the predetermined impact force to be applied to the pallet.

The pallet impact station according to claim 1 wherein after said controller disengages said latching mechanism from said at least one pendulum swing arm, said controller is further configured to operate said latching mechanism to follow said carriage assembly back to the lowered position to re-engage said at least one pendulum swing arm after said carriage assembly strikes the pallet.

6. The pallet impact station according to claim 1 wherein said carriage assembly comprises:

a carriage configured to carry said adjustable impact plate; and

a plurality of counter weights carried by said carriage.

7. The pallet impact station according to claim 1 wherein said carriage assembly further comprises a pair of impact tines carried by said adjustable impact plate.

8. The pallet impact station according to claim 1 wherein said adjustable impact plate is adjustable in a vertical direction to set where said pair of impact tines strike the pallet.

9. The pallet impact station according to claim 1 wherein said latching mechanism comprises:

a trigger housing;

a trigger rotatably positioned within said trigger housing;

a first actuator to move said trigger to engage said at least one pendulum swing arm when activated via said controller and to raise said carriage assembly; and

a second actuator to move said trigger to disengage said at least one pendulum swing arm when activated via said controller so that said carriage assembly falls toward the pallet.

The pallet impact station according to claim 1 further comprising a braking mechanism carried by said at least one pendulum swing arm and said frame, with said controller being further configured to activate said braking mechanism after said carriage assembly strikes the pallet to prevent said carriage assembly from bouncing back and striking the pallet again.

11. The pallet impact station according to claim 10 further comprising a proximity sensor carried by said frame and configured to generate a proximity signal when said at least one pendulum swing arm passes said proximity sensor prior to said carriage assembly striking the pallet;

and wherein said controller is further configured to momentarily activate said braking mechanism after a time delay from receiving the proximity signal.

12. The pallet impact station according to claim 10 wherein said braking mechanism is configured as a disc brake.

13. The pallet impact station according to claim 1 wherein said at least one pendulum swing arm comprises a front pendulum swing arm and a rear pendulum swing arm, with said latching mechanism extending between said frame and said rear pendulum swing arm.

14. A method for operating a pallet impact station comprising a frame;

at least one pendulum swing arm rotatably coupled to the frame;

a carriage assembly carried by the at least one pendulum swing arm and comprising an adjustable impact plate for impacting a pallet; and

a latching mechanism extending between the frame and the at least one pendulum swing arm, the method comprising;

operating the latching mechanism to raise the carriage assembly to a raised positon; and

operating the latching mechanism to disengage the at least one pendulum swing arm at the raised positon so that the adjustable impact plate impacts the pallet.

15. The method according to claim 14 further comprising operating the latching mechanism to engage the at least one pendulum swing arm when the carriage assembly is in a lowered position before raising the carriage assembly to the raised positon.

16. The method according to claim 15 wherein after the latching mechanism disengages from the at least one pendulum swing arm, the method further comprises:

operating the latching mechanism to

follow the carriage assembly back to the lowered position; and

re-engage the at least one pendulum swing arm after the carriage assembly strikes the pallet.

17. The method according to claim 14 wherein the pallet impact station further comprises a movement sensor carried by the frame, the method further comprising:

generating via the movement sensor a signal corresponding to how high the carriage assembly is raised by the latching mechanism; and

operating the latching mechanism to disengage the at least one pendulum swing arm when a height of the carriage assembly corresponds to a desired release height so that a predetermined impact force strikes the pallet.

18. The method according to claim 17 further comprising determining the desired release height based on the predetermined impact force to be applied to the pallet.

19. The method according to claim 14 wherein the pallet impact station further comprises a braking mechanism carried by the at least one pendulum swing arm and the frame, the method further comprising:

activating the braking mechanism after the carriage assembly strikes the pallet to prevent the carriage assembly from bouncing back and striking the pallet again.

20. The method according to claim 14 wherein the carriage assembly comprises a pair of impact tines carried by the adjustable impact plate, the method further comprising adjusting position of the adjustable impact plate in a vertical direction to set where the pair of impact tines strike the pallet.
