Fingerprint sensor including a substrate defining a ledge with contact points for incorporation into a smartcard
First Claim
1. A smart card comprising:
- a card body formed of at least three layers including an intermediate layer with electrical conductors and outer layers between which the intermediate layer is sandwiched;
a microchip connected to the electrical conductors; and
a fingerprint sensor disposed within a cavity formed in the card body, the fingerprint sensor comprising;
a contact surface;
sensor electrodes for detecting fingerprint features of a finger placed on the contact surface;
a substrate layer disposed beneath the sensor electrodes, wherein the substrate layer comprises a first portion, a second portion, and a ledge where an edge of the first portion extends beyond an edge of the second portion;
conductors connected to the sensor electrodes and extending at least partially through the substrate layer; and
contact points disposed on the ledge connecting the fingerprint sensor to the electrical conductors of the intermediate layer of the smart card.

Abstract
A fingerprint sensor for incorporation into a smart card includes sensor electrodes for detecting fingerprint features of a finger placed on a contact surface, the sensor electrodes being disposed above a substrate layer that comprises a first portion, a second portion, and a ledge where an edge of the first portion extends beyond an edge of the second portion. Contact points disposed on the ledge connect the fingerprint sensor to electrical conductors of an intermediate layer of a multi-layer smartcard. The fingerprint sensor is disposed within a cavity formed in a body of the smartcard, and the contact points disposed on the ledge are set at a depth corresponding to the thickness of an outer layer covering the electrical conductors of the intermediate layer of the smartcard.
