Abstract

A system and method for performing an in-service optical time domain reflectometry test, an in-service insertion loss test, and an in-service optical frequency domain reflectometry test using a same wavelength as the network communications for point-to-point or point-to-multipoint optical fiber networks while maintaining continuity of network communications are disclosed.

Claims

1. A method of monitoring an optical fiber with at least one optical transceiver having an optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) and/or optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) function that is disposed to couple to the optical fiber, the method comprising:

connecting an optical transceiver to a network terminal, the optical transceiver having OTDR and/or OFDR function and the network terminal is configured to read information from the optical transceiver;

coupling the optical fiber to the optical transceiver;

performing data communications on a same wavelength with the optical transceiver;

performing OTDR and/or OFDR function on the same wavelength with the optical transceiver responsive to a disruption in the data communications;

gathering measurements from the OTDR and/or OFDR function to determine at least one fault on the optical fiber;

storing the measurements in the optical transceiver;

reading the stored measurements from the optical transceiver to the network terminal, and

reporting by the network terminal of the at least one fault on the optical fiber.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising of:

visualizing the report of the at least one fault on the optical fiber by an application.

The method of claim 1, wherein in lieu of performing OTDR and/or OFDR function on the same wavelength with the optical transceiver responsive to a disruption in the data communications, the optical transceiver performs OTDR and/or OFDR function on the same wavelength with the optical transceiver responsive to a request received through the network terminal.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the request includes using simple network management protocol (SNMP).

5. The method of claim 3, wherein the request includes using HTTP and/or TLS/SSL.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein the request includes using Telnet or SSH.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the measurements includes at least one optical return loss measurement.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein a certification report is created using the OTDR and/or OFDR measurements read by the network terminal.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the connecting an optical transceiver module to a network terminal includes at least one serial gigabit media independent interface.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical transceiver includes recovering clock timing of data received.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical transceiver includes one or more lenses to improve optical coupling within the optical transceiver.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical transceiver includes a beam splitter.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical transceiver includes memory to store the measurements.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein performing OTDR and/or OFDR function on the same wavelength with the optical transceiver includes signaling a laser driver in the optical transceiver to drive an optical transmitter in the optical transceiver to emit an OTDR/OFDR signal at the same wavelength.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the OTDR/OFDR signal includes at least one pulse of light.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein the OTDR and/or OFDR function and gathering measurement is performed in synchrony with the frames of an optical Ethernet based network protocol, the method of using a Media Access Control (MAC) frame message of the optical Ethernet based network protocol to perform one or more test intervals using the optical transceiver further comprising:

performing the one or more test intervals in synchrony with the frames of the optical Ethernet based network protocol, a test interval comprising a first time interval for transmitting an OTDR/OFDR signal followed by a second time interval for turning off an optical transmitter of the optical transceiver followed by a third time interval for measuring the OTDR/OFDR signal;

during the first time interval of a test interval, using the optical transmitter for emitting the OTDR/OFDR signal using the same wavelength used for data communications onto the optical fiber;

during the second time interval of a test interval, turning off the optical transmitter resulting in no further light transmissions by the optical transmitter for the duration of the second time interval;

during the third time interval of a test interval, measuring a portion of the OTDR/OFDR signal, and

turning on the optical transmitter after the third time interval of a test interval.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the MAC frame message of the optical Ethernet based network protocol is used to schedule one or more PAUSE time periods for performing the one or more test intervals.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein a MAC control frame of the optical Ethernet based network protocol is used to indicate an extension of the optical Ethernet based network protocol frame for performing one or more test intervals.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein one or more control code groups are used by an Ethernet PMA entity to indicate timing of the one or more test intervals.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein a Link Layer Identification (LLID) field of the optical Ethernet based network protocol is used to indicate or be associated with the request to perform one or more test intervals.
