Playback device configuration
First Claim
1. A playback device comprising:
- one or more microphones;
one or more speakers;
one or more amplifiers configured to drive the one or more speakers;
one or more processors; and
a housing carrying the one or more microphones, the one or more speakers, the one or more amplifiers, the one or more processors, and data storage storing instructions that when executed by the one or more processors cause the playback device to perform functions comprising;
while playing back first audio content via the one or more amplifiers and the one or more speakers, performing a first calibration of the playback device, wherein performing the first calibration comprises;
(i) recording first audio via the one or more microphones to capture playback of the first audio content by the playback device; and
(ii) based on the recorded first audio, determining a first playback configuration that at least partially offsets acoustic characteristics of an environment surrounding the playback device; and
(iii) applying the first playback configuration to the playback device;
while playing back second audio content via the one or more amplifiers and the one or more speakers, detecting an event corresponding to a change in the environment surrounding the playback device; and
based on detecting the event, performing a second calibration of the playback device, wherein performing the second calibration comprises;
(i) recording second audio via the one or more microphones to capture playback of the second audio content by the playback device;
(ii) based on the recorded second audio, determining a second playback configuration that at least partially offsets acoustic characteristics of the environment surrounding the playback device; and
(iii) applying the second playback configuration to the playback device.

Abstract
Examples described herein involve configuring a playback device based on distortion, such as that caused by a barrier. One implementation may involve causing the playback device to play audio content according to an existing playback configuration, determining an existing frequency response of the playback device in a given system, and determining whether a difference between the existing frequency response of the playback device in the given system and a predetermined frequency response for the playback device is greater than a predetermined distortion threshold. If it is determined that the difference between the existing frequency response of the playback device and the predetermined frequency response for the playback device is greater than the predetermined distortion threshold, then the existing playback configuration of the playback device is changed to an updated playback configuration of the playback device and the playback device plays audio content according to the updated playback configuration.
