1. A surgical stapling instrument, comprising:
- an end effector selectively movable between an open configuration and a clamped configuration in response to a clamping motion, said end effector comprising;
a frame; and
a staple cartridge assembly, comprising;
a deck;
a longitudinal slot;
staple cavities defined in said deck;
staples removably stored in said staple cavities;
a cutting member movable from a starting position toward an ending position; and
a firing assembly configured to deploy said staples from said staple cavities in response to a firing motion;
an anvil configured to deform said staples;
an elongate shaft, wherein said elongate shaft defines a longitudinal axis;
an articulation joint wherein said end effector is rotatable relative to said longitudinal axis about said articulation joint in response to an articulation motion;
a first electrically-powered drive system;
a second electrically-powered drive system; and
a handle, comprising;
a user input interface;
a battery; and
a control circuit powered by said battery, wherein said control circuit is configured to actuate said first electrically-powered drive system and said second electrically-powered drive system in response to user inputs from said user input interface, wherein said first electrically-powered drive system is configured to drive said firing motion and said clamping motion, and wherein said second electrically-powered drive system is configured to drive said articulation motion.

Abstract
Articulation joints for use in connection with a surgical instrument that has a portion that must be passed through a trocar or similar structure and then articulated relative to another portion of the instrument received within the trocar. Various embodiments of the articulation joint include at least one flexible driven member to articulate the surgical implement relative to the handle assembly of the instrument.
