1. An intelligent electronic device (IED) comprising:
- one or more sensors configured to sense electrical parameters from an electrical power distribution system;
a first processor configured to control the operations of the components of the IED, the first processor further configured to receive the electrical parameters from the one or more sensors and continuously process the sensed electrical parameters to obtain up-to-date power data;
a network communication card comprising an internal database and a data gathering module, the data gathering module configured to continuously retrieve the up-to-date power data from the first processor irrespective of whether a client request for information is received, the data gathering module further configured to send the up-to-date power data to the internal database, and the internal database configured to store the up-to-date power data; and
a housing in which at least the one or more sensors, the first processor, and the network communication card are disposed;
wherein a communication link is configured to enable communication between the network communication card and a remote terminal;
wherein the network communication card is configured to receive an information request from the remote terminal via the communication link;
wherein the network communication card is further configured to retrieve the up-to-date power data from the internal database without involvement by the one or more sensors or first processor; and
wherein the network communication card is further configured to respond to the information request with the retrieved up-to-date power data stored in the internal database without requesting data from the one or more sensors or first processor.

Abstract
There is provided an intelligent electronic device for responding to user data and information requests regarding power usage and power quality for any metered point within a power distribution system. The intelligent electronic device includes a first network interface which receives client side information and data requests, which are processed in accordance with a network protocol and forwarded to a network interface via a network socket interface translator which translates management signals to facilitate the eventual data transfer. Protocol routines process the requests by constructing an internal data request in certain cases and forwards the internal data request to a data interface for translation from an internal data request format of the protocol routine format to a native database format. The database receives the translated request, and retrieves the requested data from a measuring unit of the electric power meter, and forwards the data back to the requesting client.

15. A network communication card of an electric power meter, the network communication card comprising:

a processing device configured to control operations of the network communication card; a data gathering module configured to continuously retrieve power data from a measuring unit of the electric power meter, the measuring unit configured to obtain the power data by sensing electrical parameters from an electrical power distribution system; a native database configured to store the power data retrieved by the data gathering module as objects; and a network interface configured to receive a request from a remote terminal via a communication link; a protocol library configured to interpret the request received from the remote terminal and issue a call to request the latest power date from the native database, the protocol library including a database for creating a relationship between objects of a communication protocol and the object stored in the native database; wherein the network interface is further configured to respond to the request with the latest power data stored in the native database without requesting data from the measuring unit; wherein the data gathering module, native database, and network interface are disposed on a card within a housing and wherein components of the electric power meter are also disposed within the housing. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28)

29. A network communication card of an electric power meter, the network communication card comprising:

a data gathering module configured to continuously retrieve power data from a measuring unit of the electric power meter, the data gathering module communicating with the measuring unit using a communication protocol that is native to the measuring unit, the measuring unit configured to obtain the power data by sensing electrical parameters from an electrical power distribution system; a native database configured to store the power data from the data gathering module as objects; a network interface configured to receive an IEC 61850 request from a remote terminal via a communication link for the stored power data, the network interface communicating with the remote terminal in accordance with a first network protocol; a network socket translator configured to translate the IEC 61850 request between the first network protocol and an internet socket protocol; a protocol library configured to interpret the IEC 61850 request and issue a call to the native database for the power data, the protocol library further configured to use the internet socket protocol, wherein the protocol library includes a database for creating a relationship between IEC 61850 objects and the objects stored in the native database; and a data interface configured to translate the call from a protocol library format to a native database format and request the power data from the native database in the native database format; wherein the native database is configured to respond to the request from the data interface with the power data stored in the native database and the power data is sent to the remote terminal via the data interface, protocol library, network socket translator, and network interface.
