Abstract

Enhancing quality of network service for multimedia streams by recognizing audio and video packets over Point-to-Point Protocol links independent of the presence of announcement protocols comprises identifying multimedia packets from data streams and prioritizing each packet according to information that each packet carries.

Claims

1. A method for improving data communications based on quality of service (“

QOS”

) for Point-to-Point Protocol (“

PPP”

) links comprising;

identifying a multimedia packet from a data stream; and

prioritizing the packet according to information in said packet.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

recognizing User Datagram Protocol (“

UDP”

) packets from said data streams; and

determining Real-Time Protocol (“

RTP”

) packets from said UDP data.

3. The method of claim 2 further comprising identifying audio and video packets from data streams independent from presence of announcement protocols.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of using RTP compressor to identify RTP packets from UDP data.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising identifying audio and video packets from RTP data according to a predefined packet size.

6. The method of claim 1 comprising determining audio and video packets from RTP data according to variation of packet size.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein comprising updating a memory location in response to results of UDP data compression.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein comprising assigning a priority class to each packet independent of presence of announcement protocols.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein comprising transmitting assigned priorities along with packets associated with said priorities over said links.

10. An apparatus for improving quality of network service over PPP links comprising:

means for determining multimedia data packets from input streams; and

means for assigning a priority class to each packet.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising means for identifying UDP data packets from input streams and RTP packets from UDP data packets.

12. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising means for compressing UDP data to identify RTP packets and to produce Compressed RTP (CRTP) data.

13. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising means for identifying multimedia packets independent from presence of announcement protocols.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising means for assigning a priority class to each packet independent from presence of announcement protocols.

15. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising means for identifying audio and video packets in response to a predefined packet size.

16. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising means for identifying audio and video packets in response to packet size variation.

17. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising means for identifying audio and video packets independent from presence of announcement protocols.

18. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising means for assigning different priority classes between multimedia packets and non-multimedia packets.

19. The apparatus of claim 10 further comprising means for assigning different priority classes between audio and video packets.

20. A system comprising:

a processing control code; and

an application interface coupled to said processing control code, said application interface configured to enhance Quality Of Service (“

QOS”

) over Point-to-Point (“

PPP”

) links by identifying multimedia packets from input frames and prioritizing all packets independent from presence of announcement protocols.

21. The system of claim 20 wherein said packet is UDP data, said UDP data may contain RTP packets.

22. The system of claim 20 wherein said application interface is configured to be Multi-Channel Multi-Link and Real-Time Framing protocols.

23. The system of claim 20 wherein said application interface is configured to identify audio and video packets from said input frames.

24. The system of claim 20 wherein said application interface is configured to assign priority classes to packets independent from existence of announcement protocols.

25. The system of claim 20 wherein said application interface is configured to use a RTP compressor for identifying RTP packets through UDP data compression.

26. An article of manufacture for use in a computer system for improving quality of network service for multimedia streams over PPP links, the article of manufacture comprising a computer usable medium having computer readable program code means embodied in the medium, the program code comprising:

means for causing a computer to identify multimedia packets from data streams independent from preserve of announcement protocols; and

means for causing a computer to prioritizing all packets according to data carried.

27. The article of manufacture of claim 26 further comprising means embodied in the computer usable medium for causing a computer to identify audio and video packets from said data streams independent from presence of announcement protocols.

28. The article of manufacture of claim 26 further comprising means embodied in the computer usable medium for causing a computer to give higher priority to multimedia packets over non-multimedia packets.
