Abstract

Light emitting panel assemblies include in one form of the invention a light emitting panel member made of a transparent resiliently deformable elastomeric material that absorbs impact without breakage for use in automotive lighting applications of various types. In another form of the invention, a rigid light emitting panel member may be used with dome switches for switch area lighting or to backlight control buttons/key pads by providing holes or openings in the panel member for the control buttons/key pads. Also, a rigid light emitting panel member may be used as a structural member, and two or more such light emitting panel members may be stacked together and used to light an instrument panel or the like. One or more light sources may be mounted within one or more light transition areas adjacent one or more light input surfaces of the light emitting panel members. Also one or more light sources may be positioned adjacent one side of the light emitting panel members for causing light to shine through the panel members or through holes in the panel members for performing specified lighting functions.

Claims

1. A light emitting panel assembly mounted on a body portion of a vehicle, said panel assembly comprising at least one solid light emitting panel member having top and bottom surfaces and a greater cross sectional width than thickness, said panel assembly having at least one light input surface for receiving light from at least one light source and directing the light through said panel assembly from an edge of said panel assembly for emission of the light from one of said top and bottom surfaces of said panel member.

2. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member is made out of a rigid transparent material.

3. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member is curved.

4. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said panel member is located on an exterior surface of said body portion.

5. The assembly of claim 4 wherein said panel member forms said exterior surface of said body portion.

6. The assembly of claim 4 wherein said exterior surface is located along a rear of said vehicle.

7. The assembly of claim 4 wherein said exterior surface is located along a front of said vehicle.

8. The assembly of claim 4 wherein said exterior surface is located along a side of said vehicle.

9. The assembly of claim 4 wherein said exterior surface is located along a bumper of said vehicle.

10. The assembly of claim 4 wherein said exterior surface is located on a trunk lid of said vehicle.

11. The assembly of claim 4 wherein said panel member wraps around a corner of said vehicle to provide illumination around said corner.

12. The assembly of claim 11 wherein said panel member is at a rear corner of said vehicle.

13. The assembly of claim 11 wherein said panel member is at a front corner of said vehicle.

14. The assembly of claim 11 wherein said light source is located inwardly of an outermost edge of said corner to minimize the risk of damage to said light source in the event said outermost edge is impacted during a minor traffic accident.

15. The assembly of claim 11 wherein a plurality of light sources provide light to said light input system, said plurality of light sources being located inwardly of an outermost edge of said corner to minimize the risk of damage to said light sources in the event said outermost edge is impacted during a minor traffic accident.

16. The assembly of claim 1 further comprising an other light source located directly behind said panel member for shining light through said panel member independently of the light emitted by said panel member from said light source.

The assembly of claim 16 wherein said other light source provides greater illumination through said panel member than the light emitted from said one of said top and bottom surfaces because of the greater light concentration effect of said other light source shining directly through said panel member.

18. The assembly of claim 16 wherein said other light source comprises at least one of:

a light emitting diode, an incandescent lamp, and a halogen lamp.

19. The assembly of claim 16 wherein said other light source produces sufficient illumination through said panel member to provide at least one of:

a brake light, a turn signal light, a turning light, and a backup light.

20. The assembly of claim 16 further comprising a trans reflector on said panel member through which a portion of the light from said other light source passes.

21. The assembly of claim 16 further comprising a hole through said panel member in line with said other light source to provide unobstructed passage of light from said other light source through said hole in said panel member.

22. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said light source is embedded, potted or bonded within said light input surface.

23. The assembly of claim 1 wherein said light source is a remote light source that provides light to said light input surface through a light pipe.

24. The assembly of claim 1 further comprising a lens or film covering one of said top and bottom surfaces of said panel member.

26. The assembly of claim 25 wherein said top surface forms an exterior surface of said vehicle.

27. The assembly of claim 26 wherein light extracting deformities are on said bottom surface of said panel member.

25. A light emitting panel assembly that forms an indicator light for a vehicle, said panel assembly comprising at least one solid light emitting panel member having top and bottom surfaces and a greater cross sectional width than thickness, said panel assembly having at least one light input surface for receiving light from at least one light source and directing the light through said panel assembly from an edge of said panel assembly for emission of the light from one of said top and bottom surfaces of said panel member.
