Abstract

A method for constructing a ballasted roof system (20) includes the steps of installing a roofing membrane (14) onto a roof structure (12). A ballast (16, 32) is disposed on the roofing membrane, wherein the ballast has applied thereto a reflective paint (21) to improve the solar reflective properties of the ballasted roof system. The improved roofing system has solar reflective properties at least 35%.

Claims

1. A method for constructing a ballasted roof system that includes a roof structure covered by a roofing membrane with ballast disposed thereon, said method comprising applying to said ballast a reflective paint to improve the solar reflective properties of the ballasted roof system.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein said painted ballast has solar reflective properties greater than 35%.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein said ballast is disposed on the roofing membrane a predetermined period of time prior to said paint application.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein said ballast material is paver blocks distributed about the roofing membrane.

5. The method according to claim 1, wherein said ballast material is a layer of ballast rock distributed about the roofing membrane.

6. The method according to claim 5, wherein said step of applying comprises the steps of:

first applying a coat of said reflective paint in a first direction; and

next applying a second coat of said reflective paint in a second direction substantially opposite said first direction.

7. The method according to claim 5, wherein said step of applying comprises the steps of:

first applying a coat of said reflective paint in a first direction; and

next applying a second coat of said reflective paint in a second direction substantially orthogonal to said first direction.

8. The method according to claim 1, wherein said reflective paint adheres to said ballast, but not to the membrane.

9. A ballasted roof system, comprising:

a roof structure having a roof;

a roof membrane secured to said roof; and

a ballast disposed on said roof membrane, said ballast having a solar spectrum reflectance value of at least 35%.

10. The system according to claim 9, where said ballast comprises:

a reflective material applied thereto.

11. The system according to claim 10, wherein said reflective material is reflective paint selectively applied to said ballast.

12. The system according to claim 10, wherein said ballast is a plurality of paver blocks.

13. The system according to claim 10, wherein said ballast is a layer of ballast rock evenly distributed on said roof membrane.

14. The system according to claim 13, wherein said reflective paint adheres to said layer of rocks, but not to said roof membrane.
