Abstract

The present invention relates to a saw blade for cutting and finishing the surface of a work piece. The saw blade having a set of teeth disposed about the outer edge for making a cut in a work piece and an abrasive secured to the lateral surface of the saw blade. The abrasive extending laterally outwardly from the surface of the saw blade and providing a finishing effect on the work piece as the abrasive widens the cut beyond the cut of the saw blade teeth. A method for cutting and finishing a surface of a work piece utilizing a saw blade with an abrasive secured to a lateral surface of the blade and the abrasive extending beyond the cut of the saw blade teeth.

Claims

1. An apparatus for cutting and finishing the surface of a work piece and minimizing kickback, said apparatus comprising:

(a) a saw blade having two sides and teeth disposed along a first edge for making a cut in a work piece and for forming a surface on the work piece, the teeth having a tip at the outermost periphery of the saw blade and a base disposed opposite the tip, the saw blade having a second edge disposed opposite the first edge;

(b) abrasive material, applied to one side of the saw blade, the abrasive material having a first boundary and a second boundary, the first boundary situated adjacent the base of the teeth;

(c) the thickness of the abrasive material projecting outwardly from the first side beyond the outer periphery of the teeth thereby creating a cut in the work piece wider than the teeth and preventing binding of the saw blade as the saw blade progresses through the work piece.

2. The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the abrasive material is applied to at least two sides of the saw blade.

3. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the saw blade is a rotary saw blade.

4. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the saw blade is a reciprocating saw blade.

5. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the saw blade is a band saw blade.

6. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, where in the abrasive material comprises sandpaper.

8. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the abrasive material is joined to the saw blade by an adhesive binder.

9. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the abrasive material is embedded in the saw blade.

10. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the abrasive material is joined to the saw blade by any suitable means.

11. The apparatus as defined in claim 1, wherein the abrasive material extends from the first boundary to the second boundary.

13. The method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the step of applying the abrasive material is formed on both the first side and the second side of the saw blade.

14. The method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the step of applying the abrasive material is formed using an adhesive to secure sandpaper to the saw blade.

15. The method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the step of applying the abrasive material is formed using a composition of abrasive material adhered to the saw blade.

16. The method as set forth in claim 12, wherein the step of applying the abrasive material is formed by embedding the abrasive material in the saw blade.

17. The method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the step of selecting the cutting tool includes a circular saw blade.

18. The method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the step of selecting the cutting tool includes a reciprocating saw blade.

19. The method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the step of selecting the cutting tool includes a band saw blade.

20. The method as set forth in claim 12 wherein the abrasive material is applied between the first and second boundary of the saw blade.

7. The apparatus as defined in claim 7, wherein the sandpaper is joined to the saw blade by an adhesive.

12. A method for cutting and finishing a surface of a work piece in a single pass with a saw blade, said method comprising the steps of:

(a) selecting a saw blade with a first side and a second side and teeth for cutting the work piece, the teeth having a tip at the outermost periphery of the saw blade and a base disposed opposite the tip, the saw blade having a first edge and a second edge, the teeth forming the first edge and the second edge disposed opposite the first edge;

(b) applying an abrasive material to at least the first side of the saw blade, the abrasive having a first boundary and a second boundary, the first boundary being situated adjacent the base of the teeth, the abrasive material extending laterally outward beyond the furthest extreme of the saw blade teeth;

(c) passing the saw blade through the work piece to thereby simultaneously cut and sand the work piece surface, and

(d) forming a cut in the work piece wider than the teeth of the saw blade to thereby prevent saw blade kickback.

21. An apparatus for cutting and finishing the surface of a work piece, said apparatus comprising;

a saw blade with a first side and a second side and teeth for cutting the work piece, the teeth having a tip at the outermost periphery of the saw blade and a base disposed opposite the tip, the saw blade having a first edge and a second edge, the teeth forming the first edge and the second edge disposed opposite the first edge;

an abrasive material applied to at least the first side of the saw blade, the abrasive material extending laterally outward from the first side and projecting beyond the outer edge of the teeth, the abrasive material extending between a first boundary and a second boundary on the first side of the saw blade, the first boundary coincident with the base of the teeth; and

means for securing the abrasive material to the saw blade between the base of the teeth of the saw blade and the second boundary.

22. A cutting and finishing apparatus as defined in claim 21, wherein the abrasive material is applied to both the first and second side of the saw blade.

23. A cutting and finishing apparatus as defined in claim 21, wherein the saw blade is a circular saw blade.

24. A cutting and finishing apparatus as defined in claim 21, wherein the saw blade is a reciprocating saw blade.

25. A cutting and finishing apparatus as defined in claim 21, wherein the saw blade is a band saw blade.

26. A cutting and finishing apparatus as defined in claim 21, wherein the means for securing comprises an adhesive to the secure the abrasive material to the saw blade.

27. A cutting and finishing apparatus as defined in claim 21, wherein the means comprises embedding the abrasive material in the side of the saw blade.

28. A cutting and finishing apparatus as defined in claim 21, wherein the abrasive material is secured between the first and second edge of the saw blade.
