Abstract

A method and a device are described for managing traffic-relevant events in a vehicle-based navigation system. A traffic information database (1810), which can be updated by the driver in particular through prioritized driver queries initiated by the system concerning the traffic situation is managed in the navigation system. Thus observations made by the driver during his trip can be stored in the database (1810) as traffic information and used for updated route planning.

Claims

1. A method of managing traffic-relevant events in a vehicle-based navigation system having the following steps:

detecting (540, 550, 560, 570) events associated with one or more road segments of a route from the vehicle'"'"'s and/or the driver'"'"'s event horizon;

storing (580) the information which represents the events;

analyzing the events; and

processing (590) the analysis events for the purpose of an up-to-date route plan.

2. The method according to claim 1 having the following step:

enabling a dialog between driver and navigation system if the driver abandons the route suggested by the system for the purpose of making the driver'"'"'s empirical observations concerning one or more road segments available to the navigation system for driver-specific route planning.

3. The method according to claim 1 or 2,

wherein the events are obtained automatically from the vehicle'"'"'s event horizon from measurements during travel and are stored with the respective road segment as its attribute.

4. The method according to claims 1 through 3,

wherein the measurements of their analyses contain at least one of the following quantities:

average speed of the vehicle on the respective road segment;

evenness of the vehicle speed;

ambient temperature;

mechanical vibrations of the vehicle.

5. The method according to one of the preceding claims,

wherein the time of day and/or the day of the week are additionally stored as attributes with a road segment.

6. The method according to one of the preceding claims having the additional step:

assigning one or more road segments of a route with attributes that can be input by the driver of the vehicle.

7. The method according to one of the preceding claims

wherein the step of analyzing events includes their evaluation concerning their relevance as traffic problems.

8. The method according to one of the preceding claims having the additional step:

forwarding the information obtained from an analysis of the event to an external traffic information center.

9. A device for managing traffic-relevant events in a vehicle-based navigation system having devices (1810, 1820, 1830) for carrying out the method according to one or more of the preceding claims.

10. A motor vehicle navigation system containing the device according to the preceding claim.
