Abstract

A method and system for browsing and navigating web pages on a small screen device using a keypad is disclosed. A web page is divided into logical sections. In one embodiment, each section is mapped to at least one key on a keypad, such that when a user presses a key, the corresponding section of the web page is displayed on the device'"'"'s display panel. In another embodiment, each section is mapped to a symbol which can be remember by the user. The user then selects the symbol corresponding to the section of the web page that he or she desires to view. As each section of the web page is being viewed, an icon may be included on the screen to indicate that portion of the web page that is being viewed.

Claims

1. A method for displaying a web page that has been divided into a plurality of separately displayable sections on a small-screen device having a plurality of user-selectable elements and a display, the method comprising the steps of:

(i) receiving over a wireless communication channel, web page information and association information, wherein the association information associates each section of the web page to one or more selectable elements on the small-screen device;

(ii) storing in a memory of the small-screen device the web page and the information that associates each section to the one or more user-selectable elements;

(iii) detecting that a user of the small-screen device has selected one of the plurality of user-selectable elements; and

(iv) in response to step (iii), displaying on the display the section associated with the one selected element.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the user-selectable elements comprise keys on a keypad of the small-screen device.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the user-selectable elements comprise icons appearing on the display.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the sections correspond to preexisting frames defined within the web page.

5. The method claim 2, wherein a first section of the web page is associated with a plurality of keys on the keypad.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the first section is further divided into subsections, each subsection corresponding to one of the plurality of associated keys, and further comprising the steps of:

(v) receiving second user input corresponding to the same selected element; and

(vi) displaying a subsection of the section corresponding to the selected element.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of displaying an icon indicating which section of the web page is displayed.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the elements are keys on a keypad, and the indicative icon is a sectional representation of the web page.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the elements are icons displayed on the screen, and the indicative icon is a specific one of the plurality of icons.

10. The method of claim 3, wherein, in step (iv), the plurality of labels are displayed on the screen.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising the steps of:

(v) receiving second user input corresponding to one of the graphical icons displayed in step (iv); and

(vi) displaying a second section of the web page associated with the graphical icon selected in step (v).

12. The method of claim 10, wherein an icon corresponding to the section of the web page displayed in step (iv) is highlighted.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the highlighting comprises underlining.

14. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of displaying on the screen a mapping screen icon corresponding to a mapping screen, wherein the mapping screen comprises a list sections and their corresponding elements.

16. The device of claim 15, wherein the user-selectable elements comprise keys on the keypad.

17. The device of claim 15, wherein the user-selectable elements comprise icons appearing on the display.

18. The device of claim 15, wherein the sections correspond to preexisting frames defined within the web page.

19. The device claim 16, wherein a first section of the web page is associated with a plurality of keys on the keypad.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein the first section is further divided into subsections, each subsection corresponding to one of the plurality of associated keys, and wherein the instructions further cause the mobile terminal to perform the steps of:

(v) receiving second user input corresponding to the same selected element; and

(vi) displaying a subsection of the section corresponding to the selected element.

21. The device of claim 15, wherein the instructions further cause the mobile terminal to perform the step of displaying an icon indicating which section of the web page is displayed.

22. The device of claim 21, wherein the elements are keys on the keypad, and the indicative icon is a sectional representation of the web page.

23. The device of claim 21, wherein the elements are icons displayed on the screen, and the indicative icon is a specific one of the plurality of icons.

24. The device of claim 18, wherein, in step (iv), the plurality of graphical icons are displayed on the screen.

25. The device of claim 24, wherein the instructions further cause the device to perform the steps of:

(v) receiving second user input corresponding to one of the graphical icons displayed in step (iv); and

(vi) displaying a second section of the web page associated with the graphical icon selected in step (v).

26. The device of claim 24, wherein the one graphical icon corresponding to the section of the web page displayed in step (iv) is highlighted.

27. The device of claim 26, wherein the highlighting comprises underlining.

28. The device of claim 15, wherein the instructions further cause the device to perform the step of displaying on the screen a mapping screen icon corresponding to a mapping screen, wherein the mapping screen comprises a list of sections and their corresponding labels.

37. The method of claim 1, wherein the web page information comprises all sections of the web page.

38. The method of claim 1, wherein the web page information comprises only a section requested by the user in step (iii).

39. The device of claim 15, wherein the web page information comprises all sections of the web page.

40. The device of claim 15, wherein the web page information comprises only a section requested by the user in step (iii).

15. A device comprising:

a display;

a keypad;

a processor; and

a memory for storing computer readable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile terminal to display a web page that has been divided into a plurality of separately displayable sections by performing the steps of;

(i) receiving over a wireless communication channel, web page information and association information, wherein the association information associates each section of the web page to one or more selectable elements on the mobile terminal;

(ii) storing in the memory the web page and the information that associates each section to the one or more user-selectable elements;

(iii) detecting that a user has selected one of the plurality of user-selectable elements; and

(iv) in response to step (iii), displaying on the display the section associated with the one selected element.

29. A mobile terminal, comprising:

a display;

a keypad;

a processor; and

a memory for storing data and computer readable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the device to perform the steps of;

(i) storing in the memory a web page that has been divided into sections;

(ii) storing association information in the memory, wherein the information comprises an association of each section of the web page with at least one corresponding key on the keypad;

(iii) displaying a mapping screen on the display;

(iv) receiving user input corresponding to a selected key; and

(v) displaying on the display a section of the web page associated with the selected key.

30. A method for displaying web pages on a device, comprising the steps of:

(i) storing in a memory a web page, wherein the web page has been divided into sections;

(ii) storing association information in the memory, wherein the information comprises an association of each section of the web page with at least one corresponding key on the keypad;

(iii) displaying a mapping screen on a display;

(iv) receiving user input corresponding to a selected key; and

(v) displaying on the display a section of the web page associated with the selected key.

31. A method for displaying a web page that has been divided into a plurality of separately displayable sections on a small-screen device having a plurality of user-selectable elements and a display, the method comprising the steps of:

(i) receiving the web page over a wireless communication channel;

(ii) associating each section of the web page to one or more selectable elements on the small-screen device;

(iii) storing in a memory of the small-screen device the web page and information corresponding to the associations created in step (ii);

(iv) detecting that a user of the small-screen device has selected one of the plurality of user-selectable elements; and

(v) in response to step (iv), displaying on the display the section associated with the one selected element.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the user-selectable elements comprise keys on a keypad of the small-screen device.

33. The method of claim 31, wherein the user-selectable elements comprise icons appearing on the display.

35. The device of claim 34, wherein the user-selectable elements comprise keys on the keypad.

36. The device of claim 34, wherein the user-selectable elements comprise icons appearing on the display.

34. A device, comprising:

a display;

a keypad;

a processor; and

a memory for storing computer readable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the mobile terminal to display a web page that has been divided into a plurality of separately displayable sections by performing the steps of;

(i) receiving the web page over a wireless communication channel;

(ii) associating each section of the web page to one or more selectable elements on the mobile terminal;

(iii) storing in the memory the web page and information corresponding to the associations created in step (ii);

(iv) detecting that a user has selected one of the plurality of user-selectable elements; and

(v) in response to step (iv), displaying on the display the section associated with the one selected element.
