Abstract

The present invention discloses methods, apparatuses, and systems for eliminating auto- and cross-correlation in weak signal CDMA systems, such as GPS systems. The invention uses parallel data paths that allow standard correlation of signals in parallel with verification of the lock signal to determine whether the system has locked onto the proper signal within the scanned signal window. The invention can be made with multiple CPUs, a single CPU with dual input modes, on multiple IC chips, or as a single IC chip solution for small, low cost reception, downconversion, correlation, and verification systems.

Claims

1. A location services system, comprising:

a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, comprising;

a first data path for correlating an incoming GPS signal, located within a scanned signal window, with a locally generated signal;

a second data path for verifying the incoming GPS signal, located within the scanned signal window, against a lock signal, the second data path determining whether the incoming GPS signal has at least one characteristic which differentiates the incoming GPS signal from an auto-correlated signal and a cross-correlated signal;

a data path executive for monitoring the first data path and, when the incoming GPS signal does not contain the at least one characteristic, for continuing to search the scanned signal window for a second incoming GPS signal; and

means for informing a user of the location services system the position of the GPS receiver.

2. The location services system of claim 1, wherein the at least one characteristic is a predetermined signal strength of the incoming GPS signal.

3. The location services system of claim 1, wherein the at least one characteristic is a predetermined Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the incoming GPS signal.

The location services system of claim 1, wherein the at least one characteristic is selected from a group comprising a correlation to a different satellite code being stronger than the correlation to a desired satellite code, and a correlation to a different delay of the incoming CDMA signal being stronger than the correlation to the first data path'"'"'s locally generated code delay.

5. The location services system of claim 1, wherein the at least one characteristic is at least two characteristics selected from a group comprising:

a predetermined signal strength of the incoming CDMA signal, a predetermined Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the incoming GPS signal, and a predetermined amount of data present on the incoming GPS signal.

6. The location services system of claim 1, wherein the data path executive changes a generation rate of the locally generated signal to continue the search of the scanned signal.

7. The location services system of claim 6, wherein the at least one characteristic is a predetermined signal strength of the incoming GPS signal.

8. The location services system of claim 6, wherein the at least one characteristic is a predetermined Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the incoming GPS signal.

The location services system of claim 6, wherein the at least one characteristic is is selected from a group comprising a correlation to a different satellite code being stronger than the correlation to a desired satellite code, and a correlation to a different delay of the incoming CDMA signal being stronger than the correlation to the first data path'"'"'s locally generated code delay.

10. The location services system of claim 6, wherein the at least one characteristic is at least two characteristics selected from a group comprising:

a predetermined signal strength of the incoming CDMA signal, a predetermined Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the incoming GPS signal, a correlation to a different satellite code being stronger than the correlation to a desired satellite code, and a correlation to a different delay of the incoming CDMA signal being stronger than the correlation to the first data path'"'"'s locally generated code delay.

11. The location services system of claim 10, wherein the means for informing comprises a visual display.

12. The location services system of claim 11, wherein the visual display illustrates a map.

13. The location services system of claim 12, wherein the map shows a location of the GPS receiver on the map.

14. The location services system of claim 13, wherein the map further shows a predetermined destination.

15. The location services system of claim 14, wherein the map further shows at least part of a route between the location of the GPS receiver and the predetermined destination.

16. The location services system of claim 13, further comprising a wireless transceiver.

17. The location services system of claim 16, wherein the wireless transceiver is a cellular telephone.

18. The location services system of claim 17, wherein the GPS receiver can transmit the location of the GPS receiver through the wireless transceiver.

19. The location services system of claim 18, wherein the wireless transceiver provides data to the GPS receiver to allow the GPS receiver to determine the position of the GPS receiver.

20. The location services system of claim 19, wherein the provided data as is selected from a group comprising:

time information, ephemeris information, and coarse position information.
