Abstract

An intravascular filter device comprising a frame having an open configuration and a closed configuration, the frame comprising a plurality of elongate members each having a proximal end and a distal end, and a proximal region and a distal region and being fixedly connected at the proximal end to each other; and a filter having an open end and a closed end disposed on the frame; wherein the elongate members have a bend distal the proximal region and a helical curve over a substantial length of the distal region when the elongate members are in the open configuration.

Claims

1. An intravascular filter device comprising:

a frame having an open configuration and a closed configuration, the frame comprising a plurality of elongate members each having a proximal end and a distal end, and a proximal region and a distal region and being fixedly connected at the proximal end to each other; and

a filter having an open end and a closed end disposed on the frame;

wherein the elongate members have a bend distal the proximal region and a helical curve over a substantial length of the distal region when the elongate members are in the open configuration.

2. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, wherein the elongate members are made from a flexible material.

3. The intravascular filter device of claim 2, wherein the flexible material is Nitinol.

4. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, wherein the helical curve in the elongate members is formed into the members.

5. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, further comprising a second bend distal the first bend, wherein the helical curve in the elongate members is created by the filter or a vessel lumen constraining the elongate members from fully expanding in the open configuration.

6. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, wherein means for attaching the device to a wire exist proximate the proximal end.

7. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, wherein the open end of the filter is proximal the closed end of the filter.

8. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, wherein the open end of the filter is distal the closed end of the filter.

9. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, wherein means for disposing the device on a catheter exist proximate the proximal end of the elongate members.

10. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, wherein the filter is attached to a plurality of the elongate members proximate the open end of the filter.

11. The intravascular filter device of claim 6, further comprising a tip disposed on the distal end of the wire.

12. The intravascular filter device of claim 11, wherein the tip is a spring tip.

13. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, wherein the distal end of the device is attached to a wire.

14. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, wherein the distal end of the device is slideably disposed on a wire.

15. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, wherein the proximal end of the device includes means for slideably disposing the device on a wire.

16. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, further comprising a collar fixedly attached to the proximal end of the elongate members.

17. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, wherein the distal end of an elongate member overlaps the proximal end of an adjacent elongate member when the device is viewed from a distal end view.

18. The intravascular filter device of claim 11, wherein the collar and the elongate members are formed of a single tubular member having an outer diameter and an inner diameter.

19. The intravascular filter device of claim 18, wherein the inner diameter of the tubular member is between about 0.015 inches and about 0.017 inches;

and

the outer diameter of the tubular member is between about 0.022 inches and about 0.024 inches.

20. The intravascular filter device of claim 18 further comprising a catheter wherein the collar and the catheter are formed of a single tubular member.

21. The intravascular filter device of claim 1, wherein one bend of an elongate member is distal another bend in an elongate member.

22. A method of manufacture of an intravascular filter device comprising the steps of:

providing a tube, the tube having an outer diameter and an inner diameter, and a proximal end and a distal end;

cutting slots in the tube extending from the outer diameter to the inner diameter and from the distal end to a point proximate the proximal end, such that the slots create elongate members having a distal region and a proximal region fixedly attached by a ring of tube material at the proximal end of the tube;

shape-setting the elongate members; and

disposing a filter material on the distal end.

23. The method of manufacture of claim 22, wherein the slots have radial walls.

24. The method of manufacture of claim 22, wherein the slots have parallel walls

25. The method of manufacture of claim 22, wherein the slots are cut such that the elongate members have parallel walls.

26. The method of manufacture of claim 22, wherein the tube comprises a flexible material.

27. The method of manufacture of claim 26, wherein the flexible material is Nitinol.

28. The method of manufacture of claim 22, wherein the shape-setting step comprises shape-setting a bend in the elongate members at a point proximate the proximal region.

29. The method of manufacture of claim 22, wherein the shape-setting step further comprises shape-setting a helical shape into the distal region of the elongate members.
