Abstract

A map data processing method for handling map data stored in a portable storage medium includes the steps of encrypting only a portion of the map data to be stored on the storage medium, and storing the map data, of which only the portion has been encrypted, on the storage medium. According to this processing method, it is possible to reduce the time necessary for encryption and decryption. In addition, by both encrypting and decrypting the map data based on a code specific to the storage medium, it is possible to minimize illegal copying of the map data.

Claims

1. A map data processing method for handling map data stored on a portable storage medium, comprising the steps of:

encrypting only a portion of the map data to be stored on the storage medium; and

storing the map data, of which only the portion has been encrypted, on the storage medium.

2. The map data processing method according to claim 1, wherein:

the storage medium has a specific code stored therein; and

the encryption step encrypts the portion of the map data based on the code that is specific to, and stored on, the storage medium on which the map data is to be stored.

3. The map data processing method according to claim 2, further comprising the step of:

reading the map data stored on the storage medium from the storage medium, and decrypting the read map data based on the code that is specific to, and stored on, the storage medium.

4. The map data processing method according to claim 3, wherein:

the map data storage step stores specific code data indicating the code specific to the storage medium used in the encryption step together with the map data, and further comprising the step of;

reading the map data stored on the storage medium from that storage medium and rendering the read map data unusable when the code specific to the storage medium does not match the specific code indicated by the specific code data stored together with the map data read from the storage medium.

5. The map data processing method according to claim 2, wherein:

the specific code stored on the storage medium is encrypted.

6. The map data processing method according to claim 5, further comprising the steps of:

decrypting the encrypted code specific to the storage medium; and

reading the map data stored on the storage medium from that storage medium and decrypting the read map data based on the decrypted code.

7. The map data processing method according to claim 2, wherein:

the map data storage step stores specific code data indicating the code specific to the storage medium used in the encryption step together with the map data, and further comprising the step of;

reading the map data stored on the storage medium from that storage medium and rendering the read map data unusable when the code specific to the storage medium does not match the specific code indicated by the specific code data stored together with the map data read from the storage medium.

8. A map data processing device that handles map data stored on a portable storage medium, comprising:

a controller that encrypts only a portion of the map data to be stored on the storage medium, and stores the map data, of which only the portion that has been encrypted, on the storage medium.

9. The map data processing device according to claim 8, wherein:

the storage medium has a specific code stored therein; and

the controller encrypts the portion of the map data based on the code that is specific to, and stored on, the storage medium on which the map data is to be stored.

10. The map data processing device according to claim 9, wherein:

the specific code stored on the storage medium is encrypted; and

the controller decrypts the encrypted code that is specific to, and stored on, the storage medium on which the map data is to be stored, and encrypts the portion of the map data based on this decrypted code.

11. A portable storage medium comprising:

encrypted map data which constitutes only a portion of map data; and

non-encrypted map data which constitutes data other than the encrypted map data of the map data.

12. The storage medium according to claim 11, wherein:

the encrypted map data is encrypted based on a code which is specific to, and stored on, the storage medium.

13. The storage medium according to claim 12, wherein:

the specific code stored on the storage medium is encrypted.

14. An on-board map data processing device that handles map data stored on a portable storage medium, comprising:

a controller that decrypts an encrypted portion of the map data that is stored on the storage medium.

15. The on-board map data processing device according to claim 14, wherein:

the storage medium has a specific code stored therein; and

the controller decrypts the encrypted portion of the map data based on the code that is specific to, and stored on, the storage medium on which the map data is stored.

16. The on-board map data processing device according to claim 15, wherein:

the controller decrypts the encrypted portion of the map data only when the code specific to the storage medium and the specific code indicated by the specific code data that is stored together with the map data read from the storage medium match.

17. The on-board map data processing device according to claim 15, wherein:

the specific code stored on the storage medium is encrypted, and the controller decrypts the encrypted specific code.

18. The on-board map data processing device according to claim 17, wherein:

the controller decrypts the encrypted portion of the map data only when the decrypted code specific to the storage medium and the specific code indicated by the specific code data that is stored together with the map data read from the storage medium match.
