Abstract

A method for the creation and playback of recording industry music and audio, such that each time a composition is played back, a unique audio version is generated in the manner previously defined by the recording artist.

During composition creation, the artist'"'"'s definition of how the composition will vary from playback to playback is embedded into the composition data set. During playback, the composition data set is processed on a playback device by a specific playback program the artist specified, so that each time the composition is played back a unique version is generated.

Variability occurs during playback per the artist'"'"'s composition data set, which specifies the spawning of group(s) from a snippet, the selection of a snippet from each group, editing of snippets, flexible and variable placement of snippets, and the mixing of multiple snippets to generate each time sample in a channel.

Claims

1. A method for the variable playback of an artist defined music or audio composition comprising the steps of:

a. providing a playback program

b. providing a composition data set that represents the artist'"'"'s variable composition in a form compatible with said program

c. providing a playback device

d. executing said playback program on said playback device to process said composition data set

whereby each time a composition is played back a different sound sequence is generated in a manner defined by the artist in said composition data set.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said composition data includes a plurality of groups of sound segments.

3. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein said sound segments each optionally spawns a plurality of other groups at defined locations in a plurality of channels, as defined by the artist, in said composition data.

4. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein said playback program selects one sound segment from each group, by a selection method defined for each group by the artist, in said composition data.

5. A method as claimed in claim 4 wherein said playback program mixes together a plurality of selected sound segments, as defined by the artist in said composition data.

6. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein said playback program processes a specific group first, as defined by the artist in said composition data.

7. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein said playback program optionally performs editing on each sound segment before it is used, as defined by the artist in said composition data.

8. A method as claimed in claim 3 wherein said playback program optionally performs inter-channel editing of sound segments before they are used, as defined by the artist in said composition data.

9. A method as claimed in claim 3 wherein said playback program optionally calculates and utilizes a variation from the nominal placement of a sound segment, as defined by the artist, in said composition data.

10. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the playback device is comprised of memory and a processor.

11. A method as claimed in claim 10, further including a rate smoothing memory comprising one or more of first-in first-out memory (FIFO), a double buffer, or rolling buffer in random access memory.

12. A method as claimed in claim 10 whereby said processor comprises one or more of digital processors, digital signal processors, central processing units, state machines, controllers, micro-controllers and integrated circuits.

13. A method as in claim 10 whereby said memory comprises one or more of random access memory, registers, register files, flip-flops, integrated circuit storage elements, and storage media.

14. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said playback program adapts the composition playback to characteristics of the listeners system.

15. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said playback program processes the composition data in a pipeline manner.

16. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said playback program adjusts the composition playback variability based on a listener'"'"'s variability control.

17. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said playback program adjusts the composition playback variability based on an artist definition of variability as a function of days since composition release or number of times played.

18. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said composition data and said playback program are distributed to listeners by means comprising one or more of media, networks, airwaves, electromagnetic waves and the Internet.

19. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein said playback program is executed within a security, protected virtual machine.

20. A method for the creation and variable playback of artist defined music and audio compositions, comprising the steps of:

a.) providing a composition definition program which generates formatted composition data

b.) providing a playback program

c.) Providing a playback device to execute said playback program to process said formatted composition data

whereby each time a composition is played back a different sound sequence is generated in a manner defined by the artist in said composition data set.
