Abstract

A switchless, hand-held probe and method for detecting and alerting a user to the presence of an AC voltage on a conductor that minimizes the intermittent activation of the probe'"'"'s indicator due to static charge build-up. The probe comprises an antenna, an indicator, detector circuitry and activation circuitry. The probe alerts a user through the use of an indicator to the presence of electrical energy on a conductor. The antenna senses the electrical energy radiated from the conductor. When the electrical energy sensed by the antenna satisfies a particular measurement threshold, a signal is generated by the detector circuitry and received by the activation circuitry. The activation circuitry activates the indicator after a sufficient number of signals are received from the detector circuitry during a given period of time.

Claims

1. A probe for alerting a user to the presence of electrical energy on a conductive member, the probe comprising:

an antenna adapted to sense the electrical energy radiated from the member when the probe is positioned adjacent the member;

an indicator adapted to alert a user when activated;

detector circuitry connected to the antenna and adapted to provide a signal when the sensed electrical energy satisfies a measurement threshold; and

activation circuitry connected to the detector circuitry and adapted to activate the indicator when a number of signals are received during a period of time.

2. The probe of claim 1, wherein the detector circuitry includes:

a first inverter, connected to the antenna, adapted to respond to a range of voltages sensed on the antenna; and

a second inverter, connected to the first inverter, adapted to respond each time the output voltage of the first inverter changes.

3. The probe of claim 2, wherein the detector circuitry further includes a filter, connected between the first and second inverter, adapted to respond to a certain frequency range.

4. The probe of claim 2, wherein the detector circuitry further includes a high pass filter, connected between the first and second inverter, adapted to provide coupling to high frequencies.

5. The probe of claim 2, wherein the input to each of the inverters includes a resistor connected in series with the inverter for preventing high input current into the inverter.

6. The probe of claim 3, further including a voltage source having high and low voltage outputs for providing a power source.

7. The probe of claim 6, wherein the filter includes:

a capacitor connected between the first and second inverter; and

a resistor connected between the input to the second inverter and one of the voltage outputs of the voltage source.

8. The probe of claim 2, wherein the range of voltages is greater than 40 volts.

9. The probe of claim 6, wherein the antenna includes a resistor, connected between the input to the first inverter and the low voltage output of the voltage source, for adjusting the sensitivity of the probe to certain voltages sensed by the antenna.

10. The probe of claim 1, wherein the indicator includes a switch for applying power to the indicator.

11. The probe of claim 10, wherein the switch includes:

an inverter, having a low and high output, adapted to be responsive to the activation circuitry when a number of signals are received during a period of time; and

a transistor, connected to the inverter, voltage source, and indicator, adapted to supply power from the voltage source to the indicator on one of the outputs of the inverter.

12. The probe of claim 1, wherein the activation circuitry includes:

a capacitor, connected to the detector circuitry and indicator, adapted to charge on receipt of the signal from the detector circuitry for activating the indicator when the capacitor is charged sufficiently; and

an oscillator adapted to periodically discharge the capacitor.

13. The probe of claim 12, wherein the activation circuitry further includes a diode, connected between the oscillator and capacitor, adapted to prevent the oscillator from charging the capacitor.

14. The probe of claim 12, further including a resistor, connected between the detector circuitry and the capacitor, for adjusting the amount of charge the signal from the detector circuitry increments the capacitor.

15. The probe of claim 12, further including a diode, connected between the detector circuitry and the capacitor, adapted to prevent the capacitor from discharging into the detector circuitry.

16. The probe of claim 15, further including a resistor, connected between the diode and the capacitor, for adjusting the amount of charge the signal increments the capacitor.

17. The probe of claim 15, further including a resistor having a resistance greater than 1.0 megaohm, connected in parallel with the diode, for allowing the capacitor to slowly discharge into the detector circuitry.

18. The probe of claim 1, wherein the indicator is an audible indicator.

19. The probe of claim 1, wherein the indicator is a light emitting diode.

20. The probe of claim 1, further including a housing adapted to hold the antenna, indicator, detector circuitry, and activation circuitry.

21. The probe of claim 1, further comprising:

a voltage source having high and low voltage outputs for providing a power source;

a second indicator adapted to alert a user when activated;

an inverter, connected to the detector circuitry, adapted to activate the second indicator on receipt of the signal from the detector circuitry; and

a transistor, connected to the inverter, voltage source, and second indicator, adapted to supply power from the voltage source to the second indicator on one of the outputs of the inverter.

22. The probe of claim 21, wherein the second indicator is a light emitting diode.

23. The probe of claim 21, wherein the indicator is an audible indicator.

24. The probe of claim 1, wherein the activation circuitry includes means for adjusting the rate at which the indicator is activated.

25. A probe for alerting a user to the presence of electrical energy on a conductive member, the probe comprising:

an antenna adapted to sense the electrical energy radiated from the member when the probe is positioned adjacent the member;

an indicator adapted to alert a user when activated;

a first inverter, connected to the antenna, adapted to respond to a range of voltages sensed on the antenna;

a second inverter, connected to the first inverter, adapted to respond with a signal each time the output voltage of the first inverter changes; and

activation circuitry connected to the second inverter for activating the indicator when a number of signals are received during a period of time.

26. The probe of claim 25, further including a filter, connected between the first and second inverter, adapted to respond to a certain frequency range.

27. The probe of claim 25, further including a high pass filter, connected between the first and second inverter, adapted to provide coupling to high frequencies.

28. The probe of claim 25, wherein the input to each of the inverters includes a resistor connected in series with the inverter for preventing high input current into the inverter.

29. The probe of claim 26, further including a voltage source having high and low voltage outputs for providing a power source.

30. The probe of claim 29, wherein the filter includes:

a capacitor connected between the first and second inverter; and

a resistor connected between the input to the second inverter and one of the voltage outputs of the voltage source.

31. The probe of claim 25, wherein the range of voltages is greater than 40 volts.

32. The probe of claim 25, wherein the antenna includes a resistor, connected between the input to the first inverter and the low voltage output of the voltage source, for adjusting the sensitivity of the probe to certain voltages sensed by the antenna.

33. The probe of claim 25, wherein the indicator includes a switch for applying power to the indicator.

34. The probe of claim 33, wherein the switch includes:

an inverter, having a low and high output, adapted to be responsive to the activation circuitry when a number of signals are received during a period of time; and

a transistor, connected to the inverter, voltage source, and indicator, adapted to supply power from the voltage source to the indicator on one of the outputs of the inverter.

35. The probe of claim 25, wherein the activation circuitry includes:

a capacitor, connected to the second inverter and indicator, adapted to charge on receipt of the signal from the second inverter for activating the indicator when the capacitor is charged sufficiently; and

an oscillator adapted to periodically discharge the capacitor.

36. The probe of claim 35, wherein the activation circuitry further includes a diode, connected between the oscillator and capacitor, adapted to prevent the oscillator from charging the capacitor.

37. The probe of claim 35, further including a resistor, connected between the output of the second inverter and the capacitor, for adjusting the amount of charge the signal increments the capacitor.

38. The probe of claim 35, further including a diode, connected between the output of the second inverter and the capacitor, adapted to prevent the capacitor from discharging into the second inverter.

39. The probe of claim 38, further including a resistor, connected between the diode and the capacitor, for adjusting the amount of charge the signal increments the capacitor.

40. The probe of claim 38, further including a resistor having a resistance greater than 1.0 megaohms, connected in parallel with the diode, for allowing the capacitor to slowly discharge into the second inverter.

41. The probe of claim 25, wherein the indicator is an audible indicator.

42. The probe of claim 25, wherein the indicator is a light emitting diode.

43. The probe of claim 25, further including a housing adapted to hold the antenna, indicator, first and second inverter, and activation circuitry.

44. The probe of claim 25, further comprising:

a voltage source having high and low voltage outputs for providing a power source;

a second indicator adapted to alert a user when activated;

a third inverter, connected to the second inverter, adapted to activate the second indicator on receipt of the signal from the second inverter; and

a transistor, connected to the third inverter, voltage source, and second indicator, adapted to supply power from the voltage source to the second indicator on one of the outputs of the third inverter.

45. The probe of claim 44, wherein the second indicator is a light emitting diode.

46. The probe of claim 44, wherein the indicator is an audible indicator.

47. The probe of claim 25, wherein the activation circuitry includes means for adjusting the rate at which the indicator is activated.

48. A probe for alerting a user to the presence of electrical energy on a conductive member, the probe comprising:

an antenna adapted to sense the electrical energy radiated from the member when the probe is positioned adjacent the member;

an indicator adapted to alert a user when the voltage on its input is greater than a certain voltage;

detector circuitry connected to the antenna and adapted to provide a signal when the sensed electrical energy satisfies a measurement threshold;

a capacitor, connected to the detector circuitry and indicator, adapted to charge on receipt of the signal from the detector circuitry for activating the indicator when the capacitor is charged sufficiently; and

an oscillator adapted to periodically discharge the capacitor.

49. The probe of claim 48, further including a diode, connected between the oscillator and capacitor, adapted to prevent the oscillator from charging the capacitor.

50. The probe of claim 48, further including a resistor, connected between the detector circuitry and the capacitor, for adjusting the amount of charge the signal from the detector circuitry increments the capacitor.

51. The probe of claim 48, further including a diode, connected between the detector circuitry and the capacitor, adapted to prevent the capacitor from discharging into the detector circuitry.

52. The probe of claim 51, further including a resistor, connected between the diode and the capacitor for adjusting the amount of charge the signal increments the capacitor.

53. The probe of claim 51, further including a resistor having a resistance greater than 1.0 megaohm, connected in parallel with the diode, for allowing the capacitor to slowly discharge into the detector circuitry.

54. The probe of claim 48, wherein the indicator is an audible indicator.

55. The probe of claim 48, wherein the indicator is a light emitting diode.

56. The probe of claim 48, further including a housing adapted to hold the antenna, indicator, detector circuitry, capacitor, and oscillator.

57. The probe of claim 48, further comprising:

a voltage source having high and low voltage outputs for providing a power source;

a second indicator adapted to alert a user when activated;

an inverter, connected to the detector circuitry, adapted to activate the second indicator on receipt of the signal from the detector circuitry; and

a transistor, connected to the inverter, voltage source, and second indicator, adapted to supply power from the voltage source to the second indicator on one of the outputs of the inverter.

58. The probe of claim 57, wherein the second indicator is a light emitting diode.

59. The probe of claim 57, wherein the indicator is an audible indicator.

60. The probe of claim 48, wherein the oscillator includes means for adjusting the rate at which the indicator is activated.

61. A probe for alerting a user to the presence of electrical energy on a conductive member, the probe comprising:

an antenna adapted to sense the electrical energy radiated from the member when the probe is positioned adjacent the member;

an indicator adapted to alert a user when activated;

a first inverter, connected to the antenna, adapted to respond to a range of voltages sensed on the antenna;

a second inverter, connected to the first inverter, adapted to respond each time the output voltage of the first inverter changes;

a capacitor, connected to the second inverter and indicator, adapted to charge on receipt of the signal from the second inverter for activating the indicator when the capacitor is charged sufficiently; and

an oscillator adapted to periodically discharge the capacitor.

62. The probe of claim 61, further including a filter, connected between the first and second inverter, adapted to respond to a certain frequency range.

63. The probe of claim 61, further including a high pass filter, connected between the first and second inverter, adapted to provide coupling to high frequencies.

64. The probe of claim 62, further including a voltage source having high and low voltage outputs for providing a power source.

65. The probe of claim 64, wherein the filter includes:

a capacitor connected between the first and second inverter; and

a resistor connected between the input to the second inverter and one of the voltage outputs of the voltage source.

66. The probe of claim 61, wherein the range of voltages is greater than 40 volts.

67. The probe of claim 64, wherein the antenna includes a resistor, connected between the input to the first inverter and the low voltage output of the voltage source, for adjusting the sensitivity of the probe to certain voltages sensed by the antenna.

68. The probe of claim 61, further including a diode, connected between the oscillator and capacitor, adapted to prevent the oscillator from charging the capacitor.

69. The probe of claim 66, further including a resistor, connected between the diode and the capacitor, for adjusting the amount of charge the signal increments the capacitor.

70. The probe of claim 61, further including a diode, connected between the output of the second inverter and the capacitor, adapted to prevent the capacitor from discharging into the second inverter.

71. The probe of claim 61, further comprising:

a voltage source having high and low voltage outputs for providing a power source;

a second indicator adapted to alert a user when activated;

a third inverter, connected to the second inverter, adapted to activate the second indicator on receipt of the signal from the second inverter; and

a transistor, connected to the third inverter, voltage source, and second indicator, adapted to supply power from the voltage source to the second indicator on one of the outputs of the third inverter.

72. The probe of claim 71, wherein the second indicator is a light emitting diode.

73. The probe of claim 71, wherein the indicator is an audible indicator.

74. The probe of claim 61, wherein the oscillator includes means for adjusting the rate at which the indicator is activated.

75. A method for alerting a user to the presence of electrical energy on an electrically conductive member, comprising:

sensing the electrical energy radiated from the member;

providing a signal when the sensed electrical energy satisfies a measurement threshold;

charging a capacitor on receipt of the signal;

powering an indicator when the capacitor is sufficiently charged;

discharging the capacitor periodically; and

alerting the user when the indicator is activated.

76. The method of claim 75, wherein the step of providing a signal includes:

responding only to a range of voltages sensed on the antenna; and

providing a pulse signal each time the sensed voltage crosses a threshold voltage.

77. The method of claim 76, wherein the step of providing a signal further includes responding only to a range of frequencies sensed on the antenna.

78. The method of claim 75, further comprising:

powering a second indicator on receipt of the signal; and

alerting the user when the second indicator is activated.

79. The method of claim 75, wherein the step of discharging the capacitor periodically further includes adjusting the period at which the capacitor is discharged.
