Abstract

A method, system and apparatus for performing peritoneal dialysis are provided. To this end, in part, a dialysis system is provided. The dialysis system includes a display device and a web browser and web server embedded in the dialysis system. The browser and the server operate with the display device to display a number of dialysis therapy set-up procedure screens that require operator input, and to display a number of dialysis treatment screens that graphically illustrate the progress of at least one step in the dialysis therapy in at least substantially real time.

Claims

1. A dialysis system comprising:

a display device; and

a web browser and web server embedded in the dialysis system, the browser and the server operating with the display device to;

display a plurality of dialysis therapy set-up procedure screens that require an operator input, and

display a plurality of dialysis treatment screens that graphically illustrate the progress of at least one step in the dialysis therapy in at least substantially real time.

2. The dialysis system of claim 1, which includes at least one input device that operates with the dialysis therapy set-up procedure screens.

3. The dialysis system of claim 2, wherein the input device is a simulated area of a touch screen.

4. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the input device is selected from the group consisting of:

a pushbutton, a rotatable knob and a combination thereof.

5. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the set-up procedure screens display at least one image resembling equipment used in setting up the dialysis therapy.

6. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the set-up procedure screens display at least one animation depicting an action to be taken by the operator.

7. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the set-up procedure screens display at least one image depicting a hygienic precaution to be taken by the operator.

8. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the set-up procedure screens is displayed until the operator selects a prompt provided by the screen.

9. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the set-up procedure screens are colored for viewing in the presence of light.

10. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the dialysis treatment screens are colored for viewing in reduced light.

11. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein at least one of the dialysis treatment screens includes therapy status information in a form selected from the group consisting of:

numerical data, graphical data and a combination thereof.

12. The dialysis system of claim 1, wherein the display device and the embedded web browser further operate to display a plurality of dialysis therapy parameter adjustment screens.

13. The dialysis system of claim 12, wherein the dialysis therapy parameter adjustment screens include categories of parameters, wherein the operator selects a category and then a parameter from the selected category.

14. A graphical user interface system for a portable peritoneal dialysis system comprising:

a display device;

a processor that operates with the display device to display a plurality of peritoneal dialysis therapy screens; and

an analog input device that operates with the processor so that at least one operating dialysis parameter on one of the peritoneal dialysis therapy screens is displayed, which is not initially displayed by the peritoneal dialysis therapy screens.

15. The graphical user interface of claim 14, which further includes an input device that operates with the processor to indicate that a peritoneal dialysis therapy step displayed by one of the peritoneal dialysis therapy screens has been completed.

16. The graphical user interface of claim 14, which includes an input device that operates with the processor to stop the peritoneal dialysis therapy.

17. The graphical user interface of claim 14, which includes an input device that operates with the processor to display a previously displayed one of the therapy screens.

18. The graphical user interface of claim 14, which includes a plurality of input devices that operate with the processor to control the display of one of a plurality of different sets of screens, the sets categorizing the screens according to functionality.

19. The graphical user interface of claim 18, wherein the sets of screens include a therapy set-up and display set, a therapy parameter adjustment set and a therapy log set.

20. A medical fluid system comprising:

a display device;

a web browser embedded in the medical fluid system that operates with the display device;

instrument access and control software stored in the medical system; and

intermediate software that enables the instrument access and control software to communicate with the embedded web browser.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the web browser runs on a first processor and controls displaying of graphical interface screens, and the instrument access and control software runs on the first processor and at least a second processor and controls a plurality of instruments of the medical fluid system.

22. The system of claim 20, which includes a web server embedded in the medical fluid system that receives and processes information inputted into the web browser by a user of the medical fluid system.

23. The system of claim 20, wherein the intermediate software includes event handling software that interfaces between the instrument access and control software and the embedded web browser.

24. A portable, self-contained medical system comprising:

a display device;

a plurality of procedural set-up screens having a first coloration; and

a plurality of procedural therapy treatment screens having a second coloration.

25. The system of claim 24, wherein the second coloration includes a black background and red graphics.

26. A method of graphically interacting with a patient receiving a dialysis treatment comprising the steps of:

displaying a plurality of dialysis therapy set-up procedure screens;

requiring an input by the patient to proceed through the screens;

after a set-up procedure is complete, displaying a plurality of dialysis treatment screens that graphically illustrate steps in the dialysis therapy and that do not require an input by the patient to proceed through the dialysis treatment screens; and

after a therapy session is complete, displaying a plurality of disconnection screens and requiring an input by the patient to proceed through the disconnection screens.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein displaying the set-up screens includes prompting the patient to make at least one fluid line connection.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein displaying the dialysis treatment screens includes displaying at least one dialysis fill cycle, dwell cycle and drain cycle.
