Abstract

A system and method for displaying a geographical map using a single stylus movement is presented. A user contacts a display with the stylus and selects an area on the geographical map in which the user wishes to view. The user moves the stylus into a zoom zone which processing interprets stylus movements to either zoom in or zoom out of the map. When the user is satisfied with a magnification level corresponding to the zoom commands, the user enters a pan zone. The user moves the stylus around the selected area to view other parts of the map. Processing displays different map views corresponding to the stylus movement.

Claims

1. A method for handling views of a geographical map using a single stylus movement, said method comprising:

displaying the geographical map on a display;

detecting a stylus touch down location and a stylus movement, the stylus touch down location corresponding to a location where the stylus contacts the display and the stylus movement corresponds to a plurality of second locations to which the stylus is moved while contacting the display;

identifying one or more manipulation commands corresponding to the stylus movement entering one or more manipulation zones;

performing the identified manipulation command with the geographical map, the performing resulting in an altered geographical map; and

displaying the altered geographical map on the display.

2. The method as described in claim 1 wherein the manipulation commands are selected from the group consisting of a zoom command and a pan command and wherein the manipulation zones are selected from the group consisting of a zoom zone and a pan zone.

3. The method as described in claim 1 further comprising:

superimposing a first stylus identifier on the geographical map in response to the detecting, the location of the first stylus identifier corresponding to the stylus movement; and

changing the first stylus identifier to a second stylus identifier in response to the stylus movement entering one of the manipulation zones wherein the manipulation zone is a pan zone and wherein the second stylus identifier is different than the first stylus identifier.

4. The method as described in claim 1 further comprising:

selecting a manipulation mode wherein the manipulation mode is selected from the group consisting of an arc mode and a circle mode.

5. The method as described in claim 1 further comprising:

superimposing a zoom arc on the geographical map wherein the manipulation zone is a zoom zone and wherein the zoom zone corresponds to the zoom arc.

6. The method as described in claim 1 further comprising:

superimposing a zoom circle on the geographical map wherein the manipulation mode is a zoom zone and wherein the zoom zone corresponds to the zoom circle.

7. The method as described in claim 1 wherein the manipulation command is a pan command wherein the pan command includes a panning direction, the method further comprising:

moving a panning distance on the geographical map corresponding to the panning direction, the moving resulting in the altered geographical map.

8. An information handling system comprising:

one or more processors;

a memory accessible by the processors;

one or more nonvolatile storage devices accessible by the processors;

a display accessible by the processors; and

a map handling tool to handle views of a geographical map using a single stylus movement, the map handling tool including;

display logic for displaying the geographical map on the display;

detection logic for detecting a stylus touch down location and a stylus movement, the stylus touch down location corresponding to a location where the stylus contacts the display and the stylus movement corresponds to a plurality of second locations to which the stylus is moved while contacting the display;

identification logic for identifying one or more manipulation commands corresponding to the stylus movement entering one or more manipulation zones;

command logic for performing the identified manipulation command with the geographical map, the performing resulting in an altered geographical map; and

display logic for displaying the altered geographical map on the display.

9. The information handling system as described in claim 8 wherein the manipulation commands are selected from the group consisting of a zoom command and a pan command and wherein the manipulation zones are selected from the group consisting of a zoom zone and a pan zone.

10. The information handling system as described in claim 8 further comprising:

imaging logic for superimposing a first stylus identifier on the geographical map in response to the detecting, the location of the first stylus identifier corresponding to the stylus movement; and

stylus logic for changing the first stylus identifier to a second stylus identifier in response to the stylus movement entering one of the manipulation zones wherein the manipulation zone is a pan zone and wherein the second stylus identifier is different than the first stylus identifier.

11. The information handling system as described in claim 8 further comprising:

imaging logic for superimposing a zoom arc on the geographical map wherein the manipulation zone is a zoom zone and wherein the zoom zone corresponds to the zoom arc.

12. The information handling system as described in claim 8 further comprising:

imaging logic for superimposing a zoom circle on the geographical map wherein the manipulation mode is a zoom zone and wherein the zoom zone corresponds to the zoom circle.

13. The information handling system as described in claim 8 wherein the manipulation command is a pan command wherein the pan command includes a panning direction, the information handling system further comprising:

tracking logic for moving a panning distance on the geographical map corresponding to the panning direction, the moving resulting in the altered geographical map.

14. A computer program product stored in a computer operable media for handling views of a geographical map, said computer program product comprising:

means for displaying the geographical map on a display;

means for detecting a stylus touch down location and a stylus movement, the stylus touch down location corresponding to a location where the stylus contacts the display and the stylus movement corresponds to a plurality of second locations to which the stylus is moved while contacting the display;

means for identifying one or more manipulation commands corresponding to the stylus movement entering one or more manipulation zones;

means for performing the identified manipulation command with the geographical map, the performing resulting in an altered geographical map; and

means for displaying the altered geographical map on the display.

15. The computer program product as described in claim 14 wherein the manipulation commands are selected from the group consisting of a zoom command and a pan command and wherein the manipulation zones are selected from the group consisting of a zoom zone and a pan zone.

16. The computer program product as described in claim 14 further comprising:

means for superimposing a first stylus identifier on the geographical map in response to the detecting, the location of the first stylus identifier corresponding to the stylus movement; and

means for changing the first stylus identifier to a second stylus identifier in response to the stylus movement entering one of the manipulation zones wherein the manipulation zone is a pan zone and wherein the second stylus identifier is different than the first stylus identifier.

17. The computer program product as described in claim 14 further comprising:

means for selecting a manipulation mode wherein the manipulation mode is selected from the group consisting of an arc mode and a circle mode.

18. The computer program product as described in claim 14 further comprising:

means for superimposing a zoom arc on the geographical map wherein the manipulation zone is a zoom zone and wherein the zoom zone corresponds to the zoom arc.

19. The computer program product as described in claim 14 further comprising:

means for superimposing a zoom circle on the geographical map wherein the manipulation mode is a zoom zone and wherein the zoom zone corresponds to the zoom circle.

20. The computer program product as described in claim 14 wherein the manipulation command is a pan command wherein the pan command includes a panning direction, the computer program product further comprising:

means for moving a panning distance on the geographical map corresponding to the panning direction, the moving resulting in the altered geographical map.

21. A method for handling views of a geographical map using a single stylus movement, said method comprising:

displaying the geographical map on a display;

detecting a stylus touch down location and a stylus movement, the stylus touch down location corresponding to a location where the stylus contacts the display and the stylus movement corresponds to a plurality of second locations to which the stylus is moved while contacting the display;

superimposing a first stylus identifier on the geographical map in response to the detecting, the location of the first stylus identifier corresponding to the stylus movement;

identifying one or more manipulation commands corresponding to the stylus movement entering one or more manipulation zones wherein the manipulation commands are selected from the group consisting of a zoom command and a pan command and wherein the manipulation zones are selected from the group consisting of a zoom zone and a pan zone;

changing the first stylus identifier to a second stylus identifier in response to the stylus movement entering one of the manipulation zones wherein the manipulation zone is a pan zone and wherein the second stylus identifier is different than the first stylus identifier;

performing the identified manipulation command with the geographical map, the performing resulting in an altered geographical map; and

displaying the altered geographical map on the display.

22. A method for handling views of a geographical map using a single stylus movement, said method comprising:

displaying the geographical map on a display;

detecting a stylus touch down location and a stylus movement, the stylus touch down location corresponding to a location where the stylus contacts the display and the stylus movement corresponds to a plurality of second locations to which the stylus is moved while contacting the display;

identifying a pan command corresponding to the stylus movement entering a pan zone, the pan command including a panning direction;

performing the identified pan command with the geographical map wherein the performing includes moving a panning distance on the geographical map corresponding to the panning direction, the performing resulting in an altered geographical map; and

displaying the altered geographical map on the display.

23. An information handling system comprising:

one or more processors;

a memory accessible by the processors;

one or more nonvolatile storage devices accessible by the processors;

a display accessible by the processors; and

a map handling tool to handle views of a geographical map using a single stylus movement, the map handling tool including;

display logic for displaying the geographical map on the display;

detection logic for detecting a stylus touch down location and a stylus movement, the stylus touch down location corresponding to a location where the stylus contacts the display and the stylus movement corresponds to a plurality of second locations to which the stylus is moved while contacting the display;

imaging logic for superimposing a first stylus identifier on the geographical map in response to the detecting, the location of the first stylus identifier corresponding to the stylus movement;

identification logic for identifying one or more manipulation commands corresponding to the stylus movement entering one or more manipulation zones wherein the manipulation commands are selected from the group consisting of a zoom command and a pan command and wherein the manipulation zones are selected from the group consisting of a zoom zone and a pan zone;

stylus logic for changing the first stylus identifier to a second stylus identifier in response to the stylus movement entering one of the manipulation zones wherein the manipulation zone is a pan zone and wherein the second stylus identifier is different than the first stylus identifier;

command logic for performing the identified manipulation command with the geographical map, the performing resulting in an altered geographical map; and

display logic for displaying the altered geographical map on the display.

24. A computer program product stored in a computer operable media for handling views of a geographical map, said computer program product comprising:

means for displaying the geographical map on a display;

means for detecting a stylus touch down location and a stylus movement, the stylus touch down location corresponding to a location where the stylus contacts the display and the stylus movement corresponds to a plurality of second locations to which the stylus is moved while contacting the display;

means for superimposing a first stylus identifier on the geographical map in response to the detecting, the location of the first stylus identifier corresponding to the stylus movement;

means for identifying one or more manipulation commands corresponding to the stylus movement entering one or more manipulation zones wherein the manipulation commands are selected from the group consisting of a zoom command and a pan command and wherein the manipulation zones are selected from the group consisting of a zoom zone and a pan zone;

means for changing the first stylus identifier to a second stylus identifier in response to the stylus movement entering one of the manipulation zones wherein the manipulation zone is a pan zone and wherein the second stylus identifier is different than the first stylus identifier;

means for performing the identified manipulation command with the geographical map, the performing resulting in an altered geographical map; and

means for displaying the altered geographical map on the display.
