Abstract

A WAP-free, IETF-Specification Compliant Multimedia Message Service Center (MMSC)-Multimedia Message Service (MMS) User Agent Interface based on the Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is provided, as well as an all-HTTP multimedia messaging technique in general, using HTTP POST and GET techniques, between mobile stations and multimedia messaging service centers (MMSCs) for multimedia message (MM) submission and delivery.

Claims

1. A method of sending a multimedia message, comprising:

inserting a multimedia message into an HTTP POST command;

addressing said HTTP POST command to a multimedia message database; and

transmitting said HTTP POST command including said multimedia message.

2. The method of sending a multimedia message according to claim 1, wherein:

said HTTP POST command is transmitted via a wireless network.

3. The method of sending a multimedia message according to claim 1, wherein:

said multimedia message database is associated with a multimedia message service center.

4. The method of sending a multimedia message according to claim 1, wherein said multimedia message includes at least one of the following:

a digital image;

a text message;

an audio file; and

a digital movie;

5. The method of sending a multimedia message according to claim 4, wherein:

said digital image is a JPEG compressed image.

6. The method of sending a multimedia message according to claim 4, wherein:

said audio file is a WAV format audio file.

7. The method of sending a multimedia message according to claim 4, wherein:

said digital movie is a MOV format movie.

8. The method of sending a multimedia message according to claim 1, wherein:

said multimedia message is sent from a wireless device.

9. The method of sending a multimedia message according to claim 1, wherein:

said multimedia message is received by a wireless device.

10. The method of sending a multimedia message according to claim 1, wherein:

said multimedia message is sent from a first wireless device, and received by a second wireless device.

11. A method of receiving a multimedia message, comprising:

receiving a multimedia message Notification message;

transmitting an HTTP GET command to retrieve a multimedia message from a multimedia message database; and

receiving a response to said HTTP GET command including said retrieved multimedia message.

12. The method of receiving a multimedia message according to claim 11, wherein:

said HTTP GET command is received via a wireless network.

13. The method of receiving a multimedia message according to claim 11, wherein:

said multimedia message database is associated with a multimedia message service center.

14. The method of receiving a multimedia message according to claim 11, wherein said multimedia message includes at least one of the following:

a digital image;

a text message;

an audio file; and

a digital movie;

15. The method of receiving a multimedia message according to claim 11, wherein:

said multimedia message is sent by a wireless device.

16. The method of receiving a multimedia message according to claim 11, wherein:

said multimedia message is received by a wireless device.

17. The method of receiving a multimedia message according to claim 11, wherein:

said multimedia message is sent from a first wireless device, and received by a second wireless device.

18. A method of servicing multimedia message transmission and delivery, comprising:

receiving from a first wireless device an HTTP POST command including a multimedia message intended for a second wireless device;

notifying said second wireless device of the availability of a multimedia message; and

transmitting a response to an HTTP GET command including said multimedia message.

19. The method of servicing multimedia message transmission and delivery according to claim 18, wherein:

said notification includes indication of the source of the multimedia message.

20. The method of servicing multimedia message transmission and delivery according to claim 18, further comprising:

storing said multimedia message received from said first wireless device in a database.

21. The method of servicing multimedia message transmission and delivery according to claim 18, wherein:

said multimedia message servicing is performed in a multimedia message servicing center accessible via an Internet.

22. Apparatus for sending a multimedia message, comprising:

means for inserting a multimedia message into an HTTP POST command;

means for addressing said HTTP POST command to a multimedia message database; and

means for transmitting said HTTP POST command including said multimedia message via a wireless network.

23. Apparatus for receiving a multimedia message, comprising:

means for receiving a multimedia message Notification message;

means for transmitting an HTTP GET command to retrieve a multimedia message from a multimedia message database; and

means for receiving a response to said HTTP GET command including said retrieved multimedia message.

24. Apparatus for servicing multimedia message transmission and delivery, comprising:

means for receiving from a first wireless device an HTTP POST command including a multimedia message intended for a second wireless device;

means for notifying said second wireless device of the availability of a multimedia message; and

means for transmitting a response to an HTTP GET command including said multimedia message.
