Abstract

In UTRA-TDD and other systems, a method and system for providing improved acquisition performance of beacon channels. The present invention uses time-staggered beacon time slots to provide improved beacon-acquisition performance. The present invention is applicable to sectorized cells or anywhere with unfavorable deployment conditions which lead to unacceptable beacon acquisition performance with time-aligned beacon time slots.

Claims

1. A method for improved beacon acquisition performance with time slot and antenna sector reuse comprising:

generating a plurality of beacon signals;

assigning each of a plurality of beacon signals to each of a plurality of time slots; and

allocating each beacon signal and time slot to each of a plurality of cells.

2. The method of claim 1, whereby adjacent cells are assigned a different beacon signal.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the cells are divided into a plurality of sectors and each adjoining sector is assigned different beacon signal where possible.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein said cells are a plurality of pico-cells.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein said cells are a plurality of micro-cells.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein said cells are a plurality of macro-cells.

7. A system for improved beacon acquisition performance with time slot and antenna sector reuse comprising:

means for generating a plurality of beacon signals;

means for assigning each of a plurality of beacon signals to each of a plurality of time slots; and

means for allocating each beacon signal and time slot to each of a plurality of cells.

8. The system of claim 7 whereby adjacent cells are assigned a different beacon signal.

9. The system of claim 8 wherein the cells are divided into a plurality of sectors and each sector is assigned a different beacon signal where possible.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein said cells are a plurality of pico-cells.

11. The system of claim 9, wherein said cells are a plurality of micro-cells.

12. The system of claim 9, wherein said cells are a plurality of macro-cells.
