Abstract

A coating composition includes a material adapted to form a coating; and a material that fluoresces when exposed to U.V. light or the material adapted to form a coating contains a U.V. blocker disposed on a U.V. indicator. A kit containing a U.V. indicator and material adapted to form a coating containing a U.V. blocker. Methods of coating a substrate with the coating compositions are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A coating composition comprising:

a. a material adapted to form a coating; and

b. a material that fluoresces when exposed to U.V. light.

2. The coating composition of claim 1, wherein the material is an acrylate, urethane, carbonate, styrene, wax or mixtures thereof.

3. The coating composition of claim 1, wherein the material that fluoresces when exposed to U.V. light is an optical brightener, a U.V. sensitive dye, U.V. sensitive particles, or mixtures thereof.

4. The coating composition of claim 3, wherein the optical brightener is a distyryl biphenyl derivative.

5. The coating composition of claim 1, further comprising a solvent.

6. The coating composition of claim 5, wherein the solvent is a glycol, alcohol, water, or mixtures thereof.

7. The coating composition of claim 1, further comprising a U.V. blocker.

8. A coated substrate comprising:

a. a substrate; and

b. a coating disposed on a portion of the substrate wherein the coating comprising a material adapted to form a coating and material that fluoresces when exposed to U.V. light.

9. The coated substrate of claim 8, wherein the material is an acrylate, urethane, carbonate, styrene, wax or mixtures thereof.

10. The coated substrate of claim 8, wherein the material that fluoresces when exposed to U.V. light is an optical brightener, a U.V. sensitive dye, U.V. sensitive particles, or mixtures thereof.

11. The coated substrate of claim 10, wherein the optical brightener is a distyryl biphenyl derivative.

12. The coated substrate of claim 8, further comprising a U.V. blocker.

13. The coated substrate of claim 8, wherein the coating further comprises a top layer and an intermediate layer disposed between the top layer and the substrate.

14. The coated substrate of claim 13, wherein the top layer is free of the material that fluoresces when exposed to U.V. light.

15. The coated substrate of claim 13, wherein the intermediate layer is free of the material that fluoresces when exposed to U.V. light.

16. The coated substrate of claim 13, wherein the intermediate layer further includes a pH indicator.

17. The coated substrate of claim 16, wherein the pH indicator is phenolphthalein, thymolphthalein, ortho-cresolphthalein, or mixtures thereof.

18. A coated substrate comprising:

a. a substrate;

b. a U.V. indicator disposed on a portion of the substrate; and

c. a coating disposed on a portion of the U.V. indicator wherein the coating comprising a material adapted to form a coating and a U.V. blocker.

19. The coated substrate of claim 18, wherein the U.V. indicator is a U.V. sensitive dye.

20. The coated substrate of claim 18, wherein the material is an acrylate, urethane, carbonate, styrene, wax or mixtures thereof.

21. The coated substrate of claim 18, further comprising an optical brightener.

22. The coated substrate of claim 21, wherein the optical brightener is a distyryl biphenyl derivative.

23. The coated substrate of claim 18, wherein the coating further comprises a top layer having a U.V. blocker and an intermediate layer disposed between the top layer and the substrate.

24. The coated substrate of claim 24, wherein the intermediate layer is free of U.V. blocker.

25. The coated substrate of claim 24, wherein the intermediate layer further includes a pH indicator.

26. The coated substrate of claim 25, wherein the pH indicator is phenolphthalein, thymolphthalein, ortho-cresolphthalein, or mixtures thereof.

27. A kit comprising:

a. a U.V. indicator; and

b. a material adapted to form a coating having a U.V. blocker.

28. The kit of claim 27, wherein the U.V. indicator is a U.V. sensitive dye, U.V. sensitive particles or mixtures thereof.

29. The kit of claim 27, wherein the material is an acrylate, urethane, carbonate, styrene, wax or mixtures thereof.

30. The kit of claim 27, wherein the material further comprises an optical brightener.

31. The kit of claim 30, wherein the optical brightener is a distyryl biphenyl derivative.

32. A method comprising:

a. applying a coating composition comprising a material adapted to form a coating and a material that fluoresces when exposed to U.V. light on a portion of a substrate to form a coated substrate; and

b. drying the coated substrate.

33. The method of claim 32, further comprising applying a U.V. light source to the substrate to determine if the substrate is coated with the coating composition.

34. The method of claim 32, wherein the coating composition further comprises a U.V. blocker.

35. The method of claim 32, wherein the applying a coating composition further comprises applying an intermediate layer on a portion of the substrate and applying a top layer on a portion of the intermediate layer.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein the intermediate layer is free of material that fluoresces when exposed to U.V. light.

37. The method of claim 35, wherein the top layer is free of material that fluoresces when exposed to U.V. light.

38. The method of claim 35, wherein the intermediate layer further includes a pH indicator.

39. The method of claim 38, wherein the pH indicator is phenolphthalein, thymolphthalein, ortho-cresolphthalein, or mixtures thereof.

40. A method comprising:

a. applying a U.V. indicator on a portion of a substrate;

b. applying a coating composition comprising a material adapted to form a coating and a U.V. blocker on a portion of the U.V. indicator; and

c. drying the coating composition.

41. The method of claim 40, further comprising applying a U.V. light source to the U.V. indicator to determine if the U.V. indicator is coated with the coating composition.

42. The method of claim 40, wherein the coating composition further comprises an optical brightener.

43. The method of claim 40, wherein the applying a coating composition further comprises applying an intermediate layer on a portion of the substrate or U.V. indicator and applying a top layer including a U.V. blocker on a portion of the intermediate layer.

44. The method of claim 43, wherein the intermediate layer is free of U.V. blocker.

45. The method of claim 43, wherein the intermediate layer further includes a pH indicator.

46. The method of claim 45, wherein the pH indicator is phenolphthalein, thymolphthalein, ortho-cresolphthalein, or mixtures thereof.
