Abstract

Aqueous compositions as well as processes and devices are disclosed for spray application on an air scenting device to provide long lasting freshening or scenting of air flowing through the device with minimal blockage of air flow through the device. The compositions contain a polymeric emulsion, a surfactant and a fragrance material and also may optionally include a rheological agent and/or an anti-microbial agent.

Claims

1. An aqueous scenting composition formulated for spray application on an air scenting device to provide long lasting freshening or scenting of air flowing through the device with minimal blockage of air flow through the device comprising:

(a) a polymeric emulsion;

(b) a surfactant; and

(c) a fragrance material.

2. The aqueous scenting composition of claim 1 wherein the polymeric emulsion includes a latex type emulsion polymer.

3. The aqueous scenting composition of claim 2 wherein the latex type emulsion polymer is a water-borne latex polymer.

4. The aqueous scenting composition of claim 2 wherein the latex type emulsion polymer is selected from the group consisting of styrene butadiene copolymers, acrylic polymers, vinyl acrylic copolymers, styrene acrylic copolymers and mixtures thereof.

5. The aqueous scenting composition of claim 1 wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of non-ionic and anionic surfactants and mixtures thereof.

6. The aqueous scenting composition of claim 5 wherein the surfactant is a solvent free anionic/nonionic grind aid surfactant.

The aqueous scenting composition of claim 5 wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of low foaming, non-ionic surfactants compatible with anionic particles, non-ionic, dimethyl octynediol surfactants, ethoxylated alkyl phenols, nonionic, octoxynol 9 surfactants, non-ionic, polysorbate 20 and mixtures thereof.

8. The aqueous scenting composition of claim 1 including a rheological agent.

9. The aqueous scenting composition of claim 5 wherein the rheological agent is selected from the group consisting of gums, clays, cellulosics, dextrins, algins, polymeric thickeners and mixtures thereof.

10. The aqueous scenting composition of claim 1 including an anti-microbial agent.

11. An air scenting device having an aqueous scenting composition sprayed thereon to provide long lasting freshening or scenting of air flowing through the device with the spray applied scenting composition causing minimal blockage of air flow through the device, the scenting composition comprising:

(a) a polymeric emulsion;

(b) a surfactant; and

(c) a fragrance material.

12. The air scenting device of claim 11 comprising an air filter.

13. The air scenting device of claim 12 wherein the blockage of air flow through the air filter caused by the aqueous scenting composition sprayed on the air filter is less about 0.1% of the total air engaging the filter.

14. The air scenting device of claim 11 wherein the polymeric emulsion is a includes a latex type emulsion polymer.

15. The air scenting device of claim 14 wherein the latex type emulsion polymer is a water-borne latex polymer.

16. The air scenting device of claim 14 wherein the latex type emulsion polymer is selected from the group consisting of styrene butadiene copolymers, acrylic polymers, vinyl acrylic copolymers, styrene acrylic copolymers and mixtures thereof.

17. The air scenting device of claim 11 wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of non-ionic and anionic surfactants and mixtures thereof.

18. The air scenting device of claim 17 wherein the surfactant is a solvent free anionic/nonionic grind aid surfactant.

19. The air scenting device of claim 17 wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of low foaming, non-ionic surfactants compatible with anionic particles, non-ionic, dimethyl octynediol surfactants, ethoxylated alkyl phenols, nonionic, octoxynol 9 surfactants, non-ionic, polysorbate 20 and mixtures thereof.

20. The air scenting device of claim 11 wherein the scenting composition includes a rheological agent.

21. The air scenting device of claim 20 wherein the rheological agent is selected from the group consisting of gums, clays, cellulosics, dextrins, algins, polymeric thickeners and mixtures thereof.

22. The air scenting device of claim 11 wherein the scenting composition includes an anti-microbial agent.

23. A process for producing an air scenting device providing long lasting freshening or scenting of air flowing through the device comprising:

(a) spraying an aqueous scenting composition on the air scenting device in a manner such that the scenting composition causes minimal blockage of air flow through the device;

(b) the aqueous scenting composition comprising a mixture including a polymeric emulsion;

a surfactant; and

a fragrance material.

24. The process of claim 23 wherein the air scenting device comprises an air filter.

25. The process of claim 24 wherein the blockage of air flow through the air filter caused by the aqueous scenting composition sprayed on the air filter is less about 0.1% of the total air engaging the filter.

26. The process of claim 23 wherein the polymeric emulsion includes a latex type emulsion polymer.

27. The process of claim 26 wherein the latex type emulsion polymer is a water-borne latex polymer.

28. The process of claim 27 wherein the latex type emulsion polymer is selected from the group consisting of styrene butadiene copolymers, acrylic polymers, vinyl acrylic copolymers, styrene acrylic copolymers and mixtures thereof.

29. The process of claim 23 wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of non-ionic and anionic surfactants and mixtures thereof.

30. The process of claim 29 wherein the surfactant is a solvent free anionic/nonionic grind aid surfactant.

31. The process of claim 29 wherein the surfactant is selected from the group consisting of low foaming, non-ionic surfactants compatible with anionic particles, non-ionic, dimethyl octynediol surfactants, ethoxylated alkyl phenols, nonionic, octoxynol 9 surfactants, non-ionic, polysorbate 20 and mixtures thereof.

32. The process of claim 23 wherein the scenting composition includes a rheological agent.

33. The process of claim 32 wherein the rheological agent is selected from the group consisting of gums, clays, cellulosics, dextrins, algins, polymeric thickeners and mixtures thereof.

34. The process of claim 23 wherein the scenting composition includes an anti-microbial agent.

35. An aqueous scenting composition formulated for spray application on an air scenting device to provide long lasting freshening or scenting of air flowing through the device with minimal blockage of air flow through the device comprising:

(a) a polymeric latex emulsion selected from the group consisting of styrene butadiene copolymers, acrylic polymers, vinyl acrylic copolymers, styrene acrylic copolymers and mixtures thereof;

(b) a surfactant selected from the group consisting of non-ionic and anionic surfactants and mixtures thereof; and

(c) a fragrance material.

36. The aqueous scenting composition of claim 35 including a rheological agent.

37. The aqueous scenting composition of claim 35 including an anti-microbial agent.
