Abstract

Siding panels having indicia indicating a zone into which fasteners should be placed, and methods for manufacturing and installing the panels are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, the siding includes a panel of siding material having a first edge extending along a first dimension, a second edge spaced apart from the first edge a first distance, and a first side with indicia. The indicia define a zone into which at least one fastener should be placed to install the panel. The zone extends along the first dimension and has a width of approximately 0.2 inch to approximately 0.3 inch. The zone has a center line spaced apart from the first edge a second distance of approximately 7 percent to approximately 22 percent of the first distance. The siding material is composed of a continuous, single fiber-cement compound including cement, silica, and cellulose fiber.

Claims

1. A siding panel, comprising:

a panel of siding material including a first edge extending along a first dimension, a second edge spaced apart from the first edge a first distance, and a first side having indicia defining a zone into which at least one fastener should be placed to install the panel, the zone extending along the first dimension and having a width of approximately 0.2 inch to approximately 0.3 inch, wherein the zone has a center line spaced apart from the first edge a second distance of approximately 7 percent to approximately 22 percent of the first distance, and wherein the siding material is composed of a continuous, single fiber-cement compound comprising cement, silica, and cellulose fiber.

2. The siding panel of claim 1 wherein the indicia comprise marks embossed on the first side of the panel to define the zone.

3. The siding panel of claim 1 wherein the indicia comprise marks printed on the panel to define the zone.

4. The siding panel of claim 1 wherein the indicia comprise ink marks on the panel to define the zone.

5. The siding panel of claim 1 wherein the indicia comprise a first line and a second line spaced apart from the first line, and wherein the first and second lines define the zone.

6. The siding panel of claim 1 wherein the center line of the zone is spaced apart from the first edge by a third distance of approximately 0.7 inch to approximately 1.1 inches.

7. The siding panel of claim 1 wherein the center line of the zone is spaced apart from the second edge by a third distance of approximately 1 inch to approximately 1.3 inches.

8. The siding panel of claim 1 wherein the zone is a first zone and the indicia are first indicia, wherein the panel further includes second indicia defining a second zone into which at least one fastener can be placed, and wherein the second zone is spaced apart from the first zone.

9. The siding panel of claim 1 wherein the panel further includes a first end and a second end opposite the first end, and wherein the zone extends from at least proximate to the first end to at least proximate to the second end.

10. A siding panel, comprising:

a panel including a first longitudinal edge extending along a longitudinal dimension, a second longitudinal edge spaced apart from the first longitudinal edge by a first width transverse to the longitudinal dimension, and indicia defining a zone into which at least one fastener should be placed to install the panel, the zone extending along the longitudinal dimension and having a second width of approximately 0.2 inch to approximately 0.3 inch, wherein the zone has a center line spaced apart from the first longitudinal edge a first distance of approximately 0.7 inch to approximately 1.3 inches, and wherein the panel is composed of a continuous, single fiber-cement compound comprising cement, silica, and cellulose fiber.

11. The siding panel of claim 10 wherein the indicia comprise marks embossed on the panel to define the zone.

12. The siding panel of claim 10 wherein the indicia comprise marks printed on the panel to define the zone.

13. The siding panel of claim 10 wherein the indicia comprise ink marks on the panel defining the zone.

14. The siding panel of claim 10 wherein the indicia comprise a first line and a second line spaced apart from the first line, and wherein the first and second lines define the zone.

15. The siding panel of claim 10 wherein the center line is spaced apart from the first longitudinal edge by a second distance of approximately 0.7 inch to approximately 1.1 inches.

16. The siding panel of claim 10 wherein the center line is spaced apart from the second longitudinal edge by a second distance of approximately 1 inch to approximately 1.3 inches.

17. The siding panel of claim 10 wherein the zone is a first zone and the indicia are first indicia, wherein the panel further includes second indicia defining a second zone into which at least one fastener can be placed, and wherein the second zone is spaced apart from the first zone.

18. The siding panel of claim 10 wherein the panel further includes a first end and a second end opposite the first end, and wherein the zone extends from at least proximate to the first end to at least proximate to the second end.

19. A siding panel, comprising:

a panel including a first longitudinal edge extending along a longitudinal dimension, a second longitudinal edge spaced apart from the first longitudinal edge, and indicia defining a zone into which at least one fastener should be placed to install the panel, the indicia including a first line and a second line spaced apart from the first line a first distance of approximately 0.2 inch to approximately 0.3 inch, wherein the panel is composed of a continuous, single fiber-cement compound comprising cement, silica, and cellulose fiber.

20. The siding panel of claim 19 wherein the first and second lines are embossed on the panel to define the zone.

21. The siding panel of claim 19 wherein the first and second lines are printed on the panel to define the zone.

22. The siding panel of claim 19 wherein the first and second lines comprise ink marks on the panel.

23. The siding panel of claim 19 wherein the zone includes a center line spaced apart from the first longitudinal edge by a second distance of approximately 0.7 inch to approximately 1.1 inches.

24. The siding panel of claim 19 wherein the zone includes a center line spaced apart from the second longitudinal edge by a second distance of approximately 1 inch to approximately 1.3 inches.

25. The siding panel of claim 19 wherein the zone is a first zone and the indicia are first indicia, wherein the panel further includes second indicia defining a second zone into which at least one fastener can be placed, and wherein the second zone is spaced apart from the first zone.

26. The siding panel of claim 19 wherein the panel further includes a first end and a second end opposite the first end, and wherein the first and second lines extend from at least proximate to the first end to at least proximate to the second end.

27. A method of manufacturing a siding panel composed of a continuous, single fiber-cement compound, comprising:

forming indicia defining a zone into which fasteners should be placed on a first side of the siding panel having a first edge extending along a first dimension and a second edge opposite the first edge, wherein the zone extends along the first dimension and has a width of approximately 0.2 inch to approximately 0.3 inch, and wherein the zone is spaced apart from the first edge a distance of approximately 0.7 inch to approximately 1.3 inches.

28. The method of claim 27 wherein forming indicia on the first side comprises embossing indicia on the panel to define the zone.

29. The method of claim 27 wherein forming indicia on the first side comprises embossing a first line and a second line spaced apart from the first line on the panel, and wherein the first and second lines define the zone.

30. The method of claim 27 wherein forming indicia on the first side comprises stamping marks on the panel to define the zone.

31. The method of claim 27 wherein forming indicia on the first side comprises printing marks on the panel to define the zone.

32. The method of claim 27 wherein forming indicia on the first side comprises molding marks on the panel to define the zone.

33. The method of claim 27 wherein forming indicia on the first side comprises forming a first line and a second line spaced apart from the first line on the panel, wherein the first and second lines define the zone.

34. The method of claim 27 wherein the zone is a first zone and the indicia are first indicia, wherein the method further comprises forming second indicia defining a second zone into which at least one fastener can be placed, and wherein the second zone is spaced apart from the first zone.

35. A method of manufacturing siding panels, comprising:

placing indicia defining a plurality of zones into which fasteners should be placed during installation on a surface of a siding sheet composed of a continuous, single fiber-cement compound that includes cement, silica, and cellulose fiber, wherein each zone extends along a first dimension of the sheet and has a first width of approximately 0.2 inch to approximately 0.3 inch; and

cutting a plurality of panels from the sheet so that each panel has a length at least approximately equal to the first dimension of the sheet, a width transverse to the first dimension, and one of the plurality of zones having a center line spaced apart from an edge of the panel a distance of approximately 0.7 inch to approximately 1.3 inches.

36. The method of claim 35 wherein placing indicia on the surface comprises embossing indicia on the surface to define the plurality of zones.

37. The method of claim 35 wherein placing indicia on the surface comprises forming a plurality of first lines and a plurality of second lines, and wherein each second line is spaced apart from a corresponding first line to define one of the plurality of zones.

38. The method of claim 35 wherein placing indicia on the surface comprises printing marks on the sheet to define the plurality of zones.

39. A method of installing siding panels to a wall, comprising:

attaching a siding panel to the wall by placing at least one fastener inside a zone defined by indicia on the panel, wherein the zone extends along a longitudinal dimension of the panel, has a width of approximately 0.2 inch to approximately 0.3 inch, and has a center line spaced apart from an edge of the panel a distance of approximately 0.7 inch to approximately 1.3 inches.

40. The method of claim 39 wherein the indicia comprise marks embossed on each panel.

41. The method of claim 39 wherein the indicia comprise marks printed on each panel.

42. The method of claim 39 wherein the indicia comprise ink marks on each panel.
