Abstract

A system, method, and computer program for data communication, or “handshaking,” between wireless devices and a server on a wireless network. Upon a wireless device communicating with the server, the server obtains data from the wireless device indicative of wireless device attributes, and the server determines access of the wireless device, based upon the wireless device attributes, to applications either resident on that server or on other computer devices on the wireless network.

Claims

1. An interface system between one or more wireless devices and a server on a wireless network, comprising:

one or more wireless devices in selective communication with the wireless network, each wireless device having attributes thereof and a computer platform for selectively executing computer programs thereupon, and each wireless device further having an end-user who can selectively access the computer platform; and

one or more servers in selective communication to the wireless network, each server selectively in communication with the one or more wireless devices and selectively downloading applications thereto,

wherein upon a wireless device communicating with the server across the wireless network, the server obtaining data from the wireless device indicative of wireless device attributes and the server determining access of the wireless device to applications accessible through that server based upon the wireless device attributes.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the server obtains data from the wireless device at the initial contact of the application download server by the wireless device.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the server obtains data from the wireless device at an application download attempt by the wireless device.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the server accesses specific attributes of the wireless device at the time the wireless device attempts to download an application.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein at the application download attempt, the server prompts the end-user of the wireless device to request access to wireless device attributes, and upon grant of end-user permission, the wireless device transmits the wireless device attributes to the server.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the attributes of the wireless device include data relative to the computer platform.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the attributes of the wireless device include data relative to the software resident on the wireless device computer platform.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the server transmits the requirements for a requested application to be downloaded to the wireless device and the wireless device indicates to the server if the download is possible based upon the requirements received.

9. An interface system between one or more computer devices on a wireless network, comprising:

wireless communication means for selective communicating across the wireless network, the wireless communication means having attributes thereof; and

application download means for selectively communicating with the wireless communication means and selectively downloading applications thereto,

wherein upon the wireless communication means communicating with the application download means across the wireless network, the application download means obtaining wireless communication means attributes and the application download means determining access of the wireless communication means to applications accessible through the application download means based upon the wireless communication means attributes.

10. A method of communication between a wireless device and a server on a wireless network, comprising the steps of:

communicating from a wireless device to a server across a wireless network, the wireless device having attributes thereof and a computer platform for selectively executing computer programs thereupon, and the wireless device further having an end-user who can selectively access the computer platform, and the server selectively providing access of the wireless device to one or more downloadable applications;

obtaining data from the wireless device indicative of wireless device attributes; and

determining access of the wireless device to applications accessible through the server based upon the wireless device attributes.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of obtaining the data from the wireless device is receiving the wireless device attributes at the server where the application desired downloaded by the wireless device is resident.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of obtaining data from the wireless device occurs at the initial contact of the server by the wireless device.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of obtaining data from the wireless device occurs at an application download attempt by the wireless device.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of the server accessing the specific attributes of the wireless device at the time the wireless device attempts to download an application.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising the steps of:

at the application download attempt, prompting the end-user of the wireless device to request access to wireless device attributes; and

upon grant of end-user permission, transmitting wireless device attributes to the server.

16. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of obtaining data from the wireless device is obtaining attributes of the wireless device that include data relative to the computer platform.

17. The method of claim 10, wherein the step of obtaining data from the wireless device is obtaining attributes of the wireless device that include data relative to the software resident on the wireless device computer platform.

18. The method of claim 10, further comprising the steps of:

transmitting the requirements for a requested application to be downloaded to the wireless device; and

indicating if the download is possible based upon the requirements received.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the step of transmitting the requirements for a requested application to be downloaded to the wireless device is transmitting the requirements from the server where the application is resident, and wherein the step of indicating if the download is possible is transmitting data from the wireless device to the server to indicate if the download is possible.

20. The method of claim 10, further comprising the step of, upon failure of a download by the wireless device, notifying the end-user of the download failure.

21. A method of communication between computer devices on a wireless network, comprising the steps of:

a communication step for communicating from a wireless device to a server across a wireless network, the wireless device having attributes thereof and a computer platform for selectively executing computer program thereupon, and the wireless device further having an end-user who can selectively access the computer platform, and the server having at least one downloadable application resident thereupon;

a data obtaining step for wireless device data indicative of wireless device attributes; and

an access determination step for access of the wireless device to applications accessible through the server based upon the wireless device attributes.

22. A wireless device in selective communication with a wireless network, each wireless device having attributes thereof and a computer platform for selectively executing computer program thereupon, and further having an end-user who can selectively access the computer platform, wherein upon the wireless device communicating with an application download server across the wireless network, the wireless device providing wireless device attributes to the application download server.

The wireless device of claim 22, wherein at the application download attempt, the end-user of the wireless device is prompted to permit access to wireless device attributes, and upon grant of end-user permission, the wireless device transmits the wireless device attributes to the application download server.

24. The wireless device of claim 22, wherein the wireless device receives requirements for a requested application to be downloaded from an application download server, and the wireless device indicates to the application download server if the download is possible based upon the requirements received.

25. A server in selective communication to the wireless network, the server controlling access to downloadable applications and selectively in communication with one or more wireless devices, where each wireless device has attributes thereof and selectively downloads the server-controlled applications thereto, and wherein upon a wireless device communicating with the server across the wireless network, the server obtaining data from the wireless device indicative of wireless device attributes and the server determining access of the wireless device to server-controlled applications based upon the wireless device attributes.

26. The server of claim 25, wherein the server obtains data from the wireless device at the initial contact of the server by the wireless device, prior to access of server-controlled applications.

27. The server of claim 25, wherein the server obtains data from the wireless device at an application download attempt by the wireless device.

28. The server of claim 25, wherein the server accesses specific attributes of the wireless device at the time the wireless device attempts to download an application.

29. The server of claim 25, wherein at the application download attempt, the server prompts the end-user of the wireless device and requests access to wireless device attributes.

30. The server of claim 25, wherein the application download server transmits the requirements for a requested application to be downloaded to the wireless device and the wireless device indicates to the application download server if the download is possible based upon the requirements received.

31. A computer program that, when executed by a computer device that selectively provide access to wireless devices of applications downloadable across a wireless network, causes the computer device to perform the steps of:

receiving a communication attempt from a wireless device across the wireless network, the wireless device having attributes thereof and a computer platform for selectively executing computer programs thereupon, and the wireless device further having an end-user who can selectively access the computer platform;

obtaining data from the wireless device indicative of wireless device attributes; and

determining access of the wireless device to applications available on the wireless network based upon the wireless device attributes.

32. The program of claim 31, wherein the program causes the step of obtaining the data from the wireless device to be receiving the wireless device attributes at the computer device where the application desired downloaded by the wireless device is resident.

33. The program of claim 31, wherein the program causes the step of obtaining data from the wireless device to occur at the initial contact of the computer device by the wireless device.

34. The program of claim 31, wherein the program causes the step of obtaining data from the wireless device to occur at an application download attempt by the wireless device.

35. The program of claim 31, wherein the program further causes the device to perform the step of accessing the specific attributes of the wireless device at the time the wireless device attempts to download an application.

36. The program of claim 31, wherein the program causes the computer device to further perform the steps of:

at the application download attempt, prompting the end-user of the wireless device to thereby request access to wireless device attributes; and

receiving wireless device attributes at the computer device.
