Abstract

A copier includes a scanner for obtaining a digital image of a printed document and a printer for producing a copy of the scanned document. The copier is configured to identify coded data incorporated in the scanned document, the coded data indicating an identity of the scanned document. The printer reproduces the scanned document including second coded data indicative of an identity of the copy of the document. The copier has a network interface for transmitting and receiving the identity data from a server on a network where the identity data is stored.

Claims

1. A copier including:

a scanner for scanning a document which may contain both document content and first coded data indicative of an identity f the document and enabling formation of a digital image of the document;

a detector for detecting if the document contains said first coded data;

a printer adapted for printing a copy of the printed document and for incorporating in said printed copy second coded data indicative of an identity of the copy.

2. A copier according to claim 1 further including a network interface for transmitting to a computer system data indicative of said first coded data and for receiving from said computer system response data indicative of an identity of the copy.

3. A copier according to claim 2 further including a coded data generator adapted to generate said second coded data from said response data.

4. A copier according to claim 1 wherein said copier is adapted to communicate with a server for allocating a unique identifier to each copy.

5. A copier according to claim 4 wherein data indicative of said unique identifier is incorporated into said second coded data and is printed in said printed copy.

6. A copier according to claim 1 wherein said second coded data is indicative of a plurality of reference points on said copy, the second coded data being printed to be readable by a sensing device operated by a user in order to identify the position of the sensing device relative to the copy.

7. A copier according to claim 2 further adapted to transmit through said network interface second document data representing said copy of the document to enable said second document data to be stored.

8. A copier according to claim 7 wherein said second document data can be retrieved through said network interface to enable reproduction of said copy with both document content and coded data.
