Abstract

Methods and systems for treating medical devices. The treatment includes introducing liquid antimicrobial agents into medical devices.

Claims

1. A method of treating a medical device, the method comprising:

introducing a liquid antimicrobial agent into the medical device.

2. The method of claim 1, comprising actuating a syringe system comprising a first composition and a second composition, wherein the first and second compositions are capable of forming an antimicrobial agent.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the first and second compositions form the antimicrobial agent in the syringe system.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the first and second compositions form the antimicrobial agent in the medical device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the antimicrobial agent is introduced into a wall of the medical device.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the antimicrobial agent is introduced into a lumen of the medical device.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the antimicrobial agent comprises iodine.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the medical device is selected from the group consisting of a catheter, a port, and a wound drain.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the catheter is selected from the group consisting of a urinary catheter, a venous catheter, an arterial catheter, a dialysis catheter, a balloon catheter, a central venous catheter, and a pediatric catheter.

10. A medical system, comprising:

a syringe system comprising

a housing having a first compartment and a second compartment, the first and second compartments capable of being in fluid communication,

a first composition in the first compartment, and

a second composition in the second compartment,

wherein the first and second compositions are capable of reacting to form an antimicrobial agent.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the first and second compartments are arranged in series relative to an outlet of the housing.

12. The system of claim 10, wherein the first and second compartments are arranged in parallel relative to an outlet of the housing.

13. The system of claim 10, wherein the syringe system further comprises a third compartment capable of being in fluid communication with the first and second compartments.

14. The system of claim 10, further comprising a medical device having a portion capable of being introduced into a patient.

15. The system of claim 10, wherein the medical device is selected from the group consisting of a catheter, a port, and a wound drain.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the catheter is selected from the group consisting of a urinary catheter, a venous catheter, an arterial catheter, a dialysis catheter, a balloon catheter, and a pediatric catheter.

17. The system of claim 14, wherein the medical device comprises a chamber capable of being in fluid communication with the first and second compartments.

18. The system of claim 10, wherein the first composition comprises an oxidant.

19. The system of claim 10, wherein the first composition comprises an iodide.

20. The system of claim 10, wherein the second composition comprises an oxido-reductase.

21. The system of claim 10, wherein the second composition comprises an iodate.

22. The system of claim 10, wherein the antimicrobial agent comprises a proton source.

23. The system of claim 10, wherein the antimicrobial agent comprises an anti-coagulant.

24. The system of claim 10, wherein the antimicrobial agent comprises a viscosity increasing agent.

25. A medical system, comprising:

a syringe system comprising

a first syringe having a first composition, and

a second syringe having a second composition,

wherein the first and second compositions are capable of forming an antimicrobial agent.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the syringe system further comprises a compartment capable of being in fluid communication with the first and second syringes.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein the compartment is attached to the syringes.

28. The system of claim 26, wherein the compartment is attached to a medical device different than the syringe system.

29. The system of claim 25, further comprising a medical device having a portion capable of being introduced into a patient.

30. The system of claim 25, wherein the medical device is selected from the group consisting of a catheter, a port, and a wound drain.

31. The system of claim 25, wherein the catheter is selected from the group consisting of a urinary catheter, a venous catheter, an arterial catheter, a dialysis catheter, a balloon catheter, and a pediatric catheter.

32. The system of claim 25, wherein the first composition comprises an oxidant.

33. The system of claim 25, wherein the first composition comprises an iodide.

34. The system of claim 25, wherein the second composition comprises an oxido-reductase.

35. The system of claim 25, wherein the second composition comprises an iodate.

36. The system of claim 25, wherein the antimicrobial agent comprises a proton source.

37. The system of claim 25, wherein the antimicrobial agent comprises an anti-coagulant.

38. The system of claim 25, wherein the antimicrobial agent comprises a viscosity increasing agent.
