Abstract

The invention refers to a new type of ventilator, which has a compact block made of plastic or metal and includes an electrical computer interface, in which rigid pipes and a gas supply container are integrated. The new structure is more compact than conventional superstructures. In addition to this, improvements have been made to the therapy gas delivery and nebulization.

Claims

1. A ventilator, excluding anaesthetizing equipment, comprising;

a closed breathing circuit, comprising;

a housing with an interior,

a compact block made of plastic or metal,

a gas storage integrated in the block,

at least one ventilator connection,

at least one compressed air connection,

at least one valve,

at least one control system for at least one valve,

a ventilating tube,

at least one connection for the ventilating tube,

gas pipes in the interior of the housing that connect the gas supply container with at least one valve and the ventilator gas connection and the ventilator tube connection,

an electrical computer interface,

wherein the majority of the gas pipes are rigid pipes and are integrated in the block together with the gas supply container, and

wherein the at least one valve and the at least one connection for the ventilating tube and the ventilator gas connection are integrated in the block.

2. The ventilator according to claim 1, wherein the electrical computer interface provides a nurse call, RS232 and Ethernet connection.

3. The ventilator according to claim 2, wherein the RS 232 and Ethernet connections allow for bi-directional transmission of data.

4. The ventilator according to claim 2, wherein the Ethernet Interface connects to a Mini Web Server printed circuit card within the housing.

5. The ventilator according to claim 4, wherein the Mini Web Server is accessible via an intranet or the internet using standard TCP/IP protocols.

6. The ventilator according to claim 3, wherein software can be downloaded to the ventilator using either interface.

7. The ventilator according to claim 1, further comprising two mixing valves, connected to the gas storage integrated into the block, wherein the two mixing valves control the mixture of gas into the storage integrated into the block.

8. The ventilator according to claim 7, in which the control of the mixture is based on pressure inside the gas storage integrated into the block.

9. The ventilator according to claim 7, wherein a duty cycle of each mixing valve is based on a user desired mixture of supply gases and measurement of gas flow from a flow sensor prior to the storage integrated into the block.

10. The ventilator according to claim 1, wherein the different modes of operation include Infant, Pediatric and Adult applications.

11. The ventilator according to claim 1, further comprising a DC powered compressor having an output within the housing, which compressor is connected to the gas storage directly or indirectly via the compressed gas pipe.

12. The ventilator according to claim 11, which is usable in inter and intra hospital transport applications.

13. The ventilator according to claim 1, wherein the at least one control system comprise software that is programmed via a control panel and allows setting sigh ventilation for a patient at a selected time interval, repeatability and selected sigh pressure.

14. The ventilator according to claim 1, wherein the at least one control system comprise software that is programmed via a control panel and allows setting sigh ventilation for a patient at a selected time interval, repeatability and selected sigh volume.

15. The ventilator according to claim 11, wherein the internal compressor comprise either a piston or rotary compressor, or scroll pump.

16. The ventilator according to claim 1, wherein the block has one proportional valve, one flow and one pressure sensor for control of delivery of gas from the storage integrated into the block.

17. The ventilator according to claim 15, wherein the at least one control system comprise software that is programmed via a control panel and allows setting ventilation for a patient at selected values of volume or pressure and gas mixture.

18. The ventilator according to claim 15, wherein closed loop feedback from the pressure or flow sensor is used to control gas delivery to a patient.

19. The ventilator according to claim 1, wherein the breathing circuit comprises one or more of the following:

heated/non-heated humidifier, inline nebulizer, water trap, heated/non heated breathing circuit.

20. The ventilator according to claim 1, wherein the external compressed air and oxygen supply are connected to the mixing valves via one way check valves.

21. The ventilator according to claim 7, wherein the maximum pressure inside the gas storage integrated into the block is limited by an over-pressure valve.

22. The ventilator according to claim 15, wherein the proportional valve is controlled by a pulsed width modulation signal.

23. The ventilator according to claim 17, wherein the pressure and flow sensors are integrated into the block.

24. The ventilator according to claim 1, further comprising balanced purge flow restrictors are in line with a proximal flow sensor and which are integrated into the block.

25. The ventilator according to claim 1, wherein novel gases, such as Heliox (Helium:

Oxygen Mixture) and Nitric Oxide are usable as a supply gas.

26. The ventilator according to claim 24, wherein such novel gases are mixable with air and O₂ for delivery to the patient.

27. The ventilator according to claim 7, further comprising oxygen monitoring, incorporating a constant flow of gas passing by a sensor integrated into the block.

28. The ventilator according to claim 16, wherein the control panel further comprises a convertible top housing, allowing for a large or small screen.

29. The ventilator according to claim 1, wherein low flow and pressure oxygen supply gases, like from liquid oxygen systems or O₂ concentrators, are usable to operate the device.

30. The ventilator according to claim 16, wherein an indication of remaining battery capacity is displayable either numerically or graphically.
