Abstract

A method of fabricating, a composition and overmolded components fabricated by the method and with the composition such as an overmolded transponder circuitry for a radio frequency identification device.

40. An integrated transponder tag comprising:

an integrated circuit and a unitary core;

said unitary core comprising a coil-forming portion proximate one end thereof and an integrated circuit support portion proximate an opposite end thereof;

said transponder being encased in a thermoplastic material selected from the group consisting of rubber modified polyolefins, mettallocene, polyether-ester block copolymers, polyether-amide block copolymers, thermoplastic based urethanes, copolymers of ethylene with butene and maleic anhydride, hydrogenated maleic anhydride, polyester polycaprolactone, polyester polyadipate, polytetramethylene glycol ether, thermoplastic elastomer, polypropylene, vinyl, chlorinated polyether, polybutylene terephalate, ploymethylpentene, silicone, polyvinyl chloride, thermoplastic polyurethane, polycarbonate, polyurethane, polyamide, polybutylene, polyethylene and blends thereof.

41. An integrated transponder tag comprising:

an integrated circuit and a unitary core;

said unitary core comprising a coil-forming portion proximate one end thereof and an integrated circuit support portion proximate an opposite end thereof; and

wherein said integrated circuit support portion extends beneath and supports said integrated circuit.

42. The transponder of claim 41, wherein said integrated transponder is a passive radio frequency identification transponder.

43. The transponder of claim 41, wherein said unitary core is formed of a ferrite.

44. The transponder of claim 41, further comprising a printed circuit board mounted on said integrated circuit support portion.

45. The transponder of claim 41, wherein a length of said unitary core substantially defines the length of said transponder.

46. The transponder of claim 41, further comprising an encapsulation material encapsulating said transponder to form a sealed unit.

47. The transponder of claim 41, further comprising:

an antenna comprising a coil portion mounted about said coil-forming portion of said unitary core and lead portions extending from said coil portion and terminating at said integrated circuit support portion.

48. The transponder of claim 44, wherein said antenna lead portions terminate at and are electrically connected to said printed circuit board.

49. The transponder of claim 44, wherein said integrated circuit is electrically connected to said printed circuit board.

50. The transponder of claim 49, further comprising a capacitor mounted on and electrically connected to said printed circuit board.

51. The transponder of claim 50, wherein said coil is mounted on said unitary core and connected to a capacitor to form a transponder.

52. The transponder of claim 44, further comprising an antenna coil having antenna leads electrically connected to said printed circuit board and said integrated circuit is electrically connected to said printed circuit board.

53. The transponder of claim 52, wherein said antenna coil is indirectly electrically connected to said integrated circuit.

54. The transponder of claim 53, wherein said unitary core and said circuitry is encased in a thin encasing material.

55. The transponder of claim 53, wherein said exterior shape of the transponder is selected from the group consisting of cylindrical, bullet shaped, tapered at opposite ends or a flattened oval.

56. A unitary core for receiving an antenna coil, comprising:

a coil receiving portion adapted to receive an antenna coil thereon; and

an integrated circuit support portion adapted to receive an integrated circuit thereon.

57. The unitary core of claim 56, wherein said integrated circuit support portion is positioned at one end of said unitary core.

58. The unitary core of claim 57, wherein said integrated circuit support portion is adapted to receive an integrated circuit and capacitor mounted on a printed circuit board.

59. The unitary core of claim 58, wherein unitary core has said antenna coil coupled to a capacitor and positioned to form a inductor-capacitor circuit coupled to said integrated circuit.

60. The unitary core of claim 57, wherein said unitary core is formed of a ferrite.

61. The unitary core of claim 56, wherein said integrated circuit support portion is adapted to receive a printed circuit board.

62. The unitary core of claim 56, wherein said core is-formed of a ferrite.

63. The unitary core of claim 62, wherein said exterior shape of the transponder is selected from the group consisting of cylindrical, bullet shaped, tapered at opposite ends or a flattened oval.

64. A method of forming an integrated transponder tag, comprising:

providing an integrated circuit and a unitary core;

said unitary core comprising a coil-forming portion proximate one end thereof and an integrated circuit support portion proximate an opposite end thereof;

said transponder being encased in a thermoplastic material selected from the group consisting of rubber modified polyolefins, mettallocene, polyether-ester block copolymers, polyether-amide block copolymers, thermoplastic based urethanes, copolymers of ethylene with butene and maleic anhydride, hydrogenated maleic anhydride, polyester polycaprolactone, polyester polyadipate, polytetramethylene glycol ether, thermoplastic elastomer, polypropylene, vinyl, chlorinated polyether, polybutylene terephalate, ploymethylpentene, silicone, polyvinyl chloride, thermoplastic polyurethane, polycarbonate, polyurethane, polyamide, polybutylene, polyethylene and blends thereof.
