Abstract

Ultra wide band communication systems and methods are provided. In one embodiment, an ultra wide band communication system includes a first and a second communication device. A lowest common ultra wide band pulse repetition frequency is determined, and data is transmitted between the communication devices using the lowest common ultra wide band pulse repetition frequency. In another embodiment, a first and second slave transceiver communicate with a master transceiver using a time division multiple access frame, with the master transceiver providing transmission synchronization. Claims

1. A communication method, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a first and a second communication device;

determining a lowest common ultra wide band pulse repetition frequency; and

transmitting data between the first and second communication devices using the lowest common ultra wide band pulse repetition frequency.

2. The communication method of claim 1, further comprising the step of:

increasing a pulse repetition frequency based on at least one operating parameter.

3. The communication method of claim 2, wherein the at least one operating parameter is selected from a group consisting of:

a bit error rate, a signal to noise ratio, and a delay spread.

4. The communication method of claim 1, wherein the step of transmitting data between the first and second communication devices using the lowest common ultra wide band pulse repetition frequency comprises transmitting a plurality of discrete ultra wide band pulses.

5. The communication method of claim 4, wherein each of the ultra wide band pulses comprises an electromagnetic pulse having a duration that can range between about 200 picoseconds to about 400 picoseconds.

6. The communication method of claim 4, wherein each of the ultra wide band pulses occupies a portion of a radio frequency band from about 2.5 gigahertz to about 5.0 gigahertz of the radio frequency band.

7. The communication method of claim 4, wherein a radio frequency bandwidth occupied by each of the ultra wide band pulses can range between about 2.5 gigahertz to about 5.0 gigahertz.

20. The communication system of claim 3, wherein the master transceiver determines a lowest common ultra wide band pulse repetition frequency for transmission of the time division multiple access frame.

8. A communication method, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a first and a second communication device;

transferring data between the first and second communication devices by transmitting a plurality of ultra wide band pulses;

determining a bit-error-rate of the data transfer; and

adjusting an ultra wide band pulse repetition frequency based on the bit-error-rate.

9. The communication method of claim 8, further comprising a step of adjusting a bit symbol rate based on the bit-error-rate.

10. The communication method of claim 8, wherein each of the ultra wide band pulses comprises an electromagnetic pulse having a duration that can range between about 200 picoseconds to about 400 picoseconds.

11. The communication method of claim 8, wherein each of the ultra wide band pulses occupies a portion of a radio frequency band from about 2.5 gigahertz to about 5.0 gigahertz of the radio frequency band.

12. The communication method of claim 8, wherein a radio frequency bandwidth occupied by each of the ultra wide band pulses can range between about 2.5 gigahertz to about 5.0 gigahertz.

13. A communication system, comprising:

a first slave transceiver having a transmitter structured to transmit a plurality of ultra wide band pulses;

a second slave transceiver structured to communicate with the first slave transceiver by receiving the plurality of ultra wide band pulses; and

a master transceiver in communication with both slave transceivers, wherein the master transceiver provides a transmission synchronization of a time division multiple access frame comprising the plurality of ultra wide band pulses.

14. The communication system of claim 13, wherein the time division multiple access frame includes at least one random access slot to receive at lease one ultra wide band pulse.

15. The communication system of claim 13, wherein the master transceiver assigns a random access slot within the time division multiple access frame using a carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) method.

16. The communication system of claim 13, wherein the master transceiver assigns a random access slot within the time division multiple access frame using a carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA-CA) method.

17. The communication system of claim 13, wherein at least one of the slave transceivers synchronize to a data synchronization slot within the time division multiple access frame.

18. The communication system of claim 13, wherein the master transceiver dynamically allocates at least one data slot in the time division multiple access frame to at least one of the slave transceivers.

19. The communication system of claim 13, wherein the master transceiver adjusts an input gain at a receiver and a power output of a transmitter.

21. The communication system of claim 13, wherein each of the ultra wide band pulses comprises an electromagnetic pulse having a duration that can range between about 200 picoseconds to about 400 picoseconds.

22. The communication system of claim 13, wherein each of the ultra wide band pulses occupies a portion of a radio frequency band from about 2.5 gigahertz to about 5.0 gigahertz of the radio frequency band.

23. The communication system of claim 13, wherein a radio frequency bandwidth occupied by each of the ultra wide band pulses can range between about 2.5 gigahertz to about 5.0 gigahertz.
