Abstract

A graphical display in an insurance processing system is disclosed. The graphical display may include a representation of a human body. The representation of the human body may provide information to a user that is helpful in specifying insurance claim information. For example, the representation may provide information regarding body parts, information regarding injury codes, information regarding common injuries, information regarding common treatments and/or information regarding treatment codes. The representation may also be used to provide input into the insurance processing system.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

providing a graphical display comprising a trauma tuning line, wherein the trauma tuning line represents a plurality of trauma data points relating trauma severity values to monetary amounts;

receiving input via the graphical display, wherein the received input modifies at least a portion of the trauma tuning line; and

determining a monetary amount associated with a trauma severity value based on the modified trauma tuning line.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the trauma tuning line is defined by at least one function relating trauma severity values to monetary amounts.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the monetary amount associated with a trauma severity value comprises determining at least one new trauma data point from the modified trauma tuning line.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the graphical display further comprises one or more data fields comprising information describing the relationship between trauma severity values and monetary amounts.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing a baseline trauma tuning line in the graphical display, wherein the baseline trauma tuning line depicts the trauma tuning line before modifications, and wherein the baseline trauma tuning line is not affected by modifying the trauma tuning line.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the monetary amounts comprise an estimate of the total cost of an insurance claim.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the monetary amounts comprise an estimate of the cost of the trauma associated with an insurance claim.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising providing a plurality of impairment data points relating bodily impairment to monetary amounts.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

providing a plurality of impairment data points relating bodily impairment amounts to monetary amounts;

providing a graphical display of an impairment tuning line, wherein the impairment tuning line comprises at least one function relating bodily impairment amounts to monetary amounts based on at least two of the impairment data points;

receiving input via the graphical display wherein the input modifies the impairment tuning line in the graphical display; and

determining at least one new impairment data point relating at least one bodily impairment amount to at least one monetary amount based on modifications to the impairment tuning line in the graphical display.

10. The method of claim 9, further comprising sending a plurality of data points to an insurance claims processing system, wherein the plurality of data points sent include at least one new trauma data point and at least one new impairment data point, and wherein the plurality of data points are usable by the insurance claim processing system to relate one or more trauma severity values and one or more bodily impairment amounts to one or more monetary amounts.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising sending data describing the modified trauma tuning line and the modified impairment tuning line to an insurance claim processing system, wherein the data describing the trauma tuning line and the impairment tuning line is usable by the insurance claim processing system to relate one or more trauma severity values and one or more bodily impairment amounts to one or more monetary amounts.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein a monetary amount comprises an estimate of the total cost of a claim;

and wherein the method further comprises determining a monetary amount associated with trauma and a monetary amount associated with bodily impairment.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein a monetary amount comprises an estimate of the total cost of a claim;

wherein the method further comprises determining a monetary amount associated with trauma before providing the graphical display of the trauma tuning line.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the trauma tuning line comprises at least one substantially straight line segment joining two or more trauma data points.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein the trauma tuning line comprises a line fit through two or more of the trauma data points using a line fitting technique.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein providing the plurality of trauma data points relating trauma severity values to monetary amounts comprises determining one or more relationships between trauma severity values and monetary amounts based on expert evaluation of one or more insurance claims.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein providing the plurality of trauma data points relating trauma severity values to monetary amounts comprises determining one or more relationships between trauma severity values and monetary amounts based on one or more closed insurance claims

18. The method of claim 1, further comprising estimating a monetary value of one or more insurance claims using the modified trauma tuning line.

19. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

estimating a trauma severity value for an insurance claim; and

estimating a monetary value of the estimated trauma severity value using the modified trauma tuning line.

20. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

estimating a trauma severity value for an insurance claim;

estimating a monetary value of the estimated trauma severity value using the modified trauma tuning line; and

providing a warning to a user if the estimated trauma severity value is outside a range of trauma severity values used to determine the modified trauma tuning line.

21. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

estimating a trauma severity value for an insurance claim; and

estimating a monetary value of the estimated trauma severity value by interpolating between two or more trauma data points.

223. The method of claim 1, wherein the trauma severity values include bodily impairment amounts.

22. A carrier medium comprising program instructions, wherein the program instructions are executable to implement a method of:

providing a graphical display comprising a trauma tuning line, wherein the trauma tuning line represents a plurality of trauma data points relating trauma severity values to monetary amounts;

receiving input via the graphical display, wherein the received input modifies at least a portion of the trauma tuning line; and

determining a monetary amount associated with a trauma severity value based on the modified trauma tuning line.

23. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the trauma tuning line is defined by at least one function relating trauma severity values to monetary amounts.

24. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein determining the monetary amount associated with a trauma severity value comprises determining at least one new trauma data point from the modified trauma tuning line.

25. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the graphical display further comprises one or more data fields comprising information describing the relationship between trauma severity values and monetary amounts.

26. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the program instructions are further executable to implement a method of providing a baseline trauma tuning line in the graphical display, wherein the baseline trauma tuning line depicts the trauma tuning line before modifications, and wherein the baseline trauma tuning line is not affected by modifying the trauma tuning line.

27. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the monetary amounts comprise an estimate of the total cost of an insurance claim.

28. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the monetary amounts comprise an estimate of the cost of the trauma associated with an insurance claim.

29. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the program instructions are further executable to implement a method of providing a plurality of impairment data points relating bodily impairment to monetary amounts.

30. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the program instructions are further executable to implement a method of:

providing a plurality of impairment data points relating bodily impairment amounts to monetary amounts;

providing a graphical display of an impairment tuning line, wherein the impairment tuning line comprises at least one function relating bodily impairment amounts to monetary amounts based on at least two of the impairment data points;

receiving input via the graphical display wherein the input modifies the impairment tuning line in the graphical display; and

determining at least one new impairment data point relating at least one bodily impairment amount to at least one monetary amount based on modifications to the impairment tuning line in the graphical display.

31. The carrier medium of claim 30, wherein the program instructions are further executable to implement a method of sending a plurality of data points to an insurance claims processing system, wherein the plurality of data points sent include at least one new trauma data point and at least one new impairment data point, and wherein the plurality of data points are usable by the insurance claim processing system to relate one or more trauma severity values and one or more bodily impairment amounts to one or more monetary amounts.

32. The carrier medium of claim 30, wherein the program instructions are further executable to implement a method of sending data describing the modified trauma tuning line and the modified impairment tuning line to an insurance claim processing system, wherein the data describing the trauma tuning line and the impairment tuning line is usable by the insurance claim processing system to relate one or more trauma severity values and one or more bodily impairment amounts to one or more monetary amounts.

33. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein a monetary amount comprises an estimate of the total cost of a claim;

and wherein the method further comprises determining a monetary amount associated with trauma and a monetary amount associated with bodily impairment.

34. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein a monetary amount comprises an estimate of the total cost of a claim;

wherein the method further comprises determining a monetary amount associated with trauma before providing the graphical display of the trauma tuning line.

35. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the trauma tuning line comprises at least one substantially straight line segment joining two or more trauma data points.

36. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the trauma tuning line comprises a line fit through two or more of the trauma data points using a line fitting technique.

37. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein providing the plurality of trauma data points relating trauma severity values to monetary amounts comprises determining one or more relationships between trauma severity values and monetary amounts based on expert evaluation of one or more insurance claims.

38. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein providing the plurality of trauma data points relating trauma severity values to monetary amounts comprises determining one or more relationships between trauma severity values and monetary amounts based on one or more closed insurance claims

39. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the program instructions are further executable to implement a method of estimating a monetary value of one or more insurance claims using the modified trauma tuning line.

40. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the program instructions are further executable to implement a method of:

estimating a trauma severity value for an insurance claim; and

estimating a monetary value of the estimated trauma severity value using the modified trauma tuning line.

41. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the program instructions are further executable to implement a method of:

estimating a trauma severity value for an insurance claim;

estimating a monetary value of the estimated trauma severity value using the modified trauma tuning line; and

providing a warning to a user if the estimated trauma severity value is outside a range of trauma severity values used to determine the modified trauma tuning line.

42. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the program instructions are further executable to implement a method of:

estimating a trauma severity value for an insurance claim; and

estimating a monetary value of the estimated trauma severity value by interpolating between two or more trauma data points.

224. The carrier medium of claim 22, wherein the trauma severity values include bodily impairment amounts.

43. A system, comprising:

a CPU;

a memory coupled to the CPU, wherein the memory comprises program instructions executable to;

provide a graphical display comprising a trauma tuning line, wherein the trauma tuning line represents a plurality of trauma data points relating trauma severity values to monetary amounts;

receive input via the graphical display, wherein the received input modifies at least a portion of the trauma tuning line; and

determine a monetary amount associated with a trauma severity value based on the modified trauma tuning line.

44. The system of claim 43, wherein the trauma tuning line is defined by at least one function relating trauma severity values to monetary amounts.

45. The system of claim 43, wherein determining the monetary amount associated with a trauma severity value comprises determining at least one new trauma data point from the modified trauma tuning line.

46. The system of claim 43, wherein the graphical display further comprises one or more data fields comprising information describing the relationship between trauma severity values and monetary amounts.

47. The system of claim 43, wherein the program instructions are further executable to provide a baseline trauma tuning line in the graphical display, wherein the baseline trauma tuning line depicts the trauma tuning line before modifications, and wherein the baseline trauma tuning line is not affected by modifying the trauma tuning line.

48. The system of claim 43, wherein the monetary amounts comprise an estimate of the total cost of an insurance claim.

49. The system of claim 43, wherein the monetary amounts comprise an estimate of the cost of the trauma associated with an insurance claim.

50. The system of claim 43, wherein the program instructions are further executable to provide a plurality of impairment data points relating bodily impairment to monetary amounts.

51. The system of claim 43, wherein the program instructions are further executable to:

provide a plurality of impairment data points relating bodily impairment amounts to monetary amounts;

provide a graphical display of an impairment tuning line, wherein the impairment tuning line comprises at least one function relating bodily impairment amounts to monetary amounts based on at least two of the impairment data points;

receive input via the graphical display wherein the input modifies the impairment tuning line in the graphical display; and

determine at least one new impairment data point relating at least one bodily impairment amount to at least one monetary amount based on modifications to the impairment tuning line in the graphical display.

The system of claim 51, wherein the program instructions are further executable to send a plurality of data points to an insurance claims processing system, wherein the plurality of data points sent include at least one new trauma data point and at least one new impairment data point, and wherein the plurality of data points are usable by the insurance claim processing system to relate one or more trauma severity values and one or more bodily impairment amounts to one or more monetary amounts.

53. The system of claim 51, wherein the program instructions are further executable to implement a method of sending data describing the modified trauma tuning line and the modified impairment tuning line to an insurance claim processing system, wherein the data describing the trauma tuning line and the impairment tuning line is usable by the insurance claim processing system to relate one or more trauma severity values and one or more bodily impairment amounts to one or more monetary amounts.

54. The system of claim 43, wherein a monetary amount comprises an estimate of the total cost of a claim;

and wherein the method further comprises determining a monetary amount associated with trauma and a monetary amount associated with bodily impairment.

55. The system of claim 43, wherein a monetary amount comprises an estimate of the total cost of a claim;

wherein the method further comprises determining a monetary amount associated with trauma before providing the graphical display of the trauma tuning line.

56. The system of claim 43, wherein the trauma tuning line comprises at least one substantially straight line segment joining two or more trauma data points.

57. The system of claim 43, wherein the trauma tuning line comprises a line fit through two or more of the trauma data points using a line fitting technique.

58. The system of claim 43, wherein providing the plurality of trauma data points relating trauma severity values to monetary amounts comprises determining one or more relationships between trauma severity values and monetary amounts based on expert evaluation of one or more insurance claims.

59. The system of claim 43, wherein providing the plurality of trauma data points relating trauma severity values to monetary amounts comprises determining one or more relationships between trauma severity values and monetary amounts based on one or more closed insurance claims

60. The system of claim 43, wherein the program instructions are further executable to estimate a monetary value of one or more insurance claims using the modified trauma tuning line.

61. The system of claim 43, wherein the program instructions are further executable to:

estimate a trauma severity value for an insurance claim; and

estimate a monetary value of the estimated trauma severity value using the modified trauma tuning line.

62. The system of claim 43, wherein the program instructions are further executable to:

estimate a trauma severity value for an insurance claim;

estimate a monetary value of the estimated trauma severity value using the modified trauma tuning line; and

provide a warning to a user if the estimated trauma severity value is outside a range of trauma severity values used to determine the modified trauma tuning line.

63. The system of claim 43, wherein the program instructions are further executable to:

estimate a trauma severity value for an insurance claim; and

estimate a monetary value of the estimated trauma severity value by interpolating between two or more trauma data points.
