1. A method for infusing insulin to a subject to improve impaired hepatic glucose processing comprising the steps of:

  • a. determining a steady baseline circulating glucose level of the subject and obtaining a subsequent circulating glucose level at least every 30 minutes, the steady baseline circulating glucose level being two consecutive circulating glucose levels about 200 milligrams per deciliter measured five minutes apart, b. having the subject ingest a carbohydrate containing meal, c. administering a quantity of insulin through an intravenous site until the subsequent circulating glucose level shows an improvement over the steady baseline circulating glucose level, the improvement over the steady baseline circulating glucose level being a 50 milligram per deciliter or more fall from the steady baseline circulating glucose level within two hours of administering the quantity of insulin, the subsequent circulating glucose level improvement over the steady baseline circulating glucose level being a measurement of sufficient quantity of insulin to achieve an improvement in hepatic glucose processing, d. allowing the subject to rest at least one hour, e. repeating steps a-d at least two times.
