Abstract

A mobile terminal is enabled to conduct an EMV transaction. A wireless access node in the EMV card-reader terminal is provided for connecting a mobile terminal to the card-reader terminal. An EMV-proxy module executing in the card-reader terminal facilitates communication between the mobile terminal and the card-reader terminal. The EMV-proxy module lets the mobile terminal function in essentially the same way as a regular EMV chip card with respect to the card-reader terminal. The card-reader terminal may then conduct EMV transactions on behalf of the mobile terminal without requiring new software and/or hardware at the EMV issuer. EMV data is stored in the mobile terminal in the form of secure dynamic data objects. Claims

1. A method of conducting an electronic transaction in a card-reader terminal using a mobile terminal, comprising:

establishing a wireless connection between the mobile terminal and the card-reader terminal;

transferring transaction data between the mobile terminal and the card-reader terminal over the wireless connection;

hosting a proxy in the card-reader terminal to act on behalf of the mobile terminal; and

wherein the proxy uses the transaction data to conduct the electronic transaction on behalf of the mobile terminal.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the electronic transaction is a Europay, Mastercard, and Visa (EMV) transaction.

3. The method according to claim 1, further comprising authenticating a user of the mobile terminal to the proxy.

4. The method according to claim 3, wherein the step of authenticating a user to the proxy involves executing one or more Mobile electronic Transaction (MeT) authentication functions.

5. The method according to claim 1, further comprising setting up symmetric keys for the mobile terminal to be used in transferring the transaction data.

6. The method according to claim 5, wherein the step of transferring the transaction data comprises transferring secure dynamic data objects.

7. The method according to claim 6, wherein the secure dynamic data objects include Mobile electronic Transaction (MeT) tickets.

8. The method according to claim 6, further comprising updating the secure dynamic data objects upon completion of the electronic transaction.

9. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of establishing a wireless connection comprises establishing a Bluetooth wireless connection.

10. The method according to claim 1, further comprising connecting the card-reader terminal to a financial institution to complete the transaction, wherein no changes were made at the financial institution to accommodate the mobile terminal.

11. A card-reader terminal configured to conduct an electronic transaction with a mobile terminal, comprising:

a wireless access node for establishing a wireless connection between the mobile terminal and the card-reader terminal;

a storage unit configured to store computer readable code thereon, the computer readable code including a proxy for the mobile terminal; and

a microprocessor connected to storage unit, the microprocessor capable of executing the proxy on the card-reader terminal, the proxy configured to;

transfer transaction data between the mobile terminal and the card-reader terminal over the wireless connection; and

use the transaction data to conduct the electronic transaction on behalf of the mobile terminal.

12. The card-reader according to claim 11, wherein the electronic transaction is a Europay, Mastercard, and Visa (EMV) transaction.

13. The card-reader according to claim 11, wherein the proxy is further configured to authenticate a user of the mobile terminal.

14. The card-reader according to claim 13, wherein the proxy authenticates the user by executing one or more Mobile electronic Transaction (MeT) authentication functions.

15. The card-reader according to claim 11, wherein the transfer of the transaction data comprises a transfer of secure dynamic data objects.

16. The card-reader according to claim 15, wherein the transfer of secure dynamic data objects includes a transfer of Mobile electronic Transaction (MeT) tickets.

17. The card-reader according to claim 16, wherein the proxy is further configured to update the secure dynamic data objects upon completion of the electronic transaction.

18. The card-reader according to claim 11, wherein the wireless access node comprises a Bluetooth wireless access node.

19. The card-reader according to claim 11, wherein the storage unit further includes computer readable code for a card-reader terminal module configured to connect the proxy to a financial institution on behalf of the mobile terminal.

20. The card-reader according to claim 20, wherein no changes were made at the financial institution to accommodate the mobile terminal.
