Abstract

A system for improving the an image displayed on a display.

Claims

1. A method for filtering an image for displaying said image on a display comprising:

(a) filtering said image using a set of filters, wherein said set of filters includes more than 9 different re-sampling filters that reduce an error metric;

(b) re-sampling said filtered image;

(c) displaying said re-sampled image on said display.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said filters filter said luminance information and attenuate at least a portion of lower frequency chromatic information with respect to at least a portion of higher frequency chromatic information resulting from said filtering of said luminance information.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said filters are based upon a perceptual error metric.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said display is a liquid crystal display.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein said display includes a pattern of subpixels in a horizontal direction that are different than the pattern of subpixels in a vertical direction.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said re-sampling and said filtering are performed in the same operation.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein said re-sampling is performed after said filtering.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein a plurality of said filters are one-dimensional.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein a plurality of said filters are two-dimensional.

10. A method for filtering an image having chromatic information and luminance information for displaying said image on a display comprising:

(a) filtering said image using a filter, wherein said filter filters said luminance information and attenuates at least a portion of lower frequency chromatic information with respect to at least a portion of higher frequency chromatic information resulting from said filtering of said luminance information;

(b) re-sampling said filtered image;

(c) displaying said re-sampled image on said display.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein said filter filters said luminance information and attenuate at least a portion of lower frequency chromatic information with respect to at least a portion of higher frequency chromatic information resulting from said filtering of said luminance information.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein said display is a liquid crystal display.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein said display includes a pattern of subpixels in a horizontal direction that are different than the pattern of subpixels in a vertical direction.

14. A method for filtering an image for displaying said image on a display comprising:

(a) filtering said image using a filter, wherein said filter operates on data from a plurality of rows of said image simultaneously;

(b) re-sampling said filtered image;

(c) displaying said re-sampled image on said display.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein said filter includes a one dimensional re-sampling filter that reduce an error metric.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein said error metric is perceptual.

17. The method of claim 14 wherein said filter filters said luminance information and attenuate at least a portion of lower frequency chromatic information with respect to at least a portion of higher frequency chromatic information resulting from said filtering of said luminance information.

18. The method of claim 14 wherein said display is a liquid crystal display.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein said display includes a pattern of subpixels in a horizontal direction that are different than the pattern of subpixels in a vertical direction.

20. The method of claim 14 wherein said re-sampling is performed together with said filtering.

21. The method of claim 14 wherein said re-sampling is part of said filtering.

22. A method for filtering an image to maintain its spatial resolution by modifying the values of subpixels of said display for displaying said image on a display comprising:

(a) filtering said image using a filter, wherein said filter simultaneously operates on data from a plurality of rows of said image;

(b) displaying said re-sampled image on said display.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein said filter includes a one dimensional re-sampling filter that reduce an error metric.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein said error metric is perceptual.

25. The method of claim 22 wherein said filter filters said luminance information and attenuate at least a portion of lower frequency chromatic information with respect to at least a portion of higher frequency chromatic information resulting from said filtering of said luminance information.

26. The method of claim 22 wherein said display is a liquid crystal display.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein said display includes a pattern of subpixels in a horizontal direction that are different than the pattern of subpixels in a vertical direction.

28. A method for filtering an image to maintain its spatial resolution by modifying the values of subpixels of said display for displaying said image on a display comprising:

(a) filtering said image using a filter, wherein said filter filters said image in a color space that is different than the color space of said image for a display that has a first pattern of subpixels in a first direction and a different pattern of subpixels in a second direction, where the first direction is different than the second direction, wherein said filter reduces an error in a manner that accounts for said difference in said first pattern and said second pattern;

(b) displaying said filtered image on said display.

29. The method of claim 28 wherein said filter includes a one dimensional re-sampling filters that reduce an error metric.

30. The method of claim 29 wherein said error metric is perceptual.

31. The method of claim 28 wherein said filter filters said luminance information and attenuate at least a portion of lower frequency chromatic information with respect to at least a portion of higher frequency chromatic information resulting from said filtering of said luminance information.

32. The method of claim 28 wherein said display is a liquid crystal display.

33. The method of claim 32 wherein said display includes a pattern of subpixels in a horizontal direction that are different than the pattern of subpixels in a vertical direction.

34. The method of claim 28 wherein said filter performs a color space conversion.

35. A method for filtering an image for displaying said image on a display comprising:

(a) filtering said image using a set of filters that reduce an error metric, wherein said filters are based upon a constrained optimization;

(b) re-sampling said filtered image;

(c) displaying said re-sampled image on said display.

36. The method of claim 35 wherein said set of filters includes more than 9 different one dimensional re-sampling filters.

37. The method of claim 35 wherein said display includes a two-dimensional sub-pixel geometry.

38. A method for filtering an image for displaying said image on a display comprising:

(a) filtering said image using a set of filters that reduce an error metric, wherein said filters are based upon a filter having a rank of at least 2;

(b) re-sampling said filtered image;

(c) displaying said re-sampled image on said display.

39. The method of claim 38 wherein said set of filters includes more than 9 different re-sampling filters.
